Liverpool 1 - 1 Sunderland, (Suarez, Larsson) - Post Match
« on: August 13, 2011, 01:40:17 pm »

  Liverpool F.C.             v             Sunderland AFC

Date:                 13 August 2011
Kick-off Time:  15:00 British Summer Time
Venue:              Anfield (Capacity 45,276)

Team News:-
G Johnson          Hamstring Injury          Doubtful
M Skrtel             Calf Muscle Strain         Doubtful
S Gerrard           Gilmores Groin             Unavailable until 10 September

In addition, it remains to be seen how Luis Suarez will be utilised in August having only returned to pre-season training this week following his exploits with Uruguay. There is concern he may need a rest however he got a few months rest mid season due to that biting incident and so I personally believe he will be raring to go today. I expect him to be benched though.

So flanno is preferred to Kelly? No Aquilani? Kuyt on the bench. I'm not sure about the lineup but hopefully it works. Great to see Suarez start!

Love it. Flanagan starts the season at home, as well as four new boys - Downing, Adam, Henderson, and Enrique.

Suarez is a pleasant surprise, I'd all but written him off to the bench.

Lucas-Adam - so tasty - that's gonna be my area of the pitch to watch.

Only question i have is - where is Aquilani?

Reina
Flanagan    Carragher    Agger    Enrique
Lucas     Adam
Henderson    Suarez    Downing
Carroll

Subs: Doni, Meireles, Kuyt, Spearing, Ngog, Kelly, Robinson

So Flanagan getting the nod ahead of Kelly at RB surprised me. Enrique being immediately thrust into the action pleases me too as I´m a huge admirer of our powerful new LB. Henderson, Downing and Adam also making their debuts for Liverpool today, Henderson against his former club in particular should be interesting. Suarez declaring himself ready is particularly pleasing for me and I´m looking forward to see him again in Red. I imagine after winning the Copa America and the form he was in he just wanted to keep on playing!

The only slight disappointment for me today is no Aquilani on the bench. However I suppose if there is only space for him or Meireles, Kenny is trusting who produced for him last season. Hopefully there is still a place in our squad for Aqua come September as he is probably the most creative midfielder we´ve got at the club.

That's exactly the line-up I'd like to see. Get Suarez on at half time.

Though there have been whispers that Aurelio's crocked again, so we might see Enrique earlier than Kenny intended.

Feels brilliant to be starting a season after a summer in which the club's invested well. I'm particularly keen to see us rip sides apart down the left, which now looks totally rejuvenated. Downing's really impressed me pre-season - he looks quick, sharp, and eager to do well. I think everyone's looking forward to see him link with Enrique.

I guess the biggest question still to be answered is Aquilani's position at the club. Is he really committed? Does the management see him playing a part as we develop the squad further? We all know how many midfielders are currently competing for limited places. Is he one sardine too many for Kenny's tin? Perhaps this game will give us a clue.

Let's not forget that Sunderland have also invested pretty heavily (and credit is due to their owners also). I wonder if we'll get to see whether Connor Wickham was a missed opportunity for us. I suppose we should hope not.

Surely we've got too much for them though. Anfield's going to be rocking. 2:0 I reckon, Kuyt and Carroll.

Only question i have is - where is Aquilani?

Good question El C.  My assumption was there was only space on the bench for either him or Raul and Kenny is trusting what he knows at the moment. However I note on the official site Aquilani finally has a squad number once again (15) which if he was on his way out they wouldn´t have confirmed it. He may still leave before September of course, who knows!

Well just look at that. My post is now pretty much defunct. Ah well.

Team sheet looks excellent, though I'm slightly surprised not to see Kuyt start. Quite a bit of pressure on Hendo.

Key Man Match Up
Lucas Leiva                             V                  Stéphane Sessègnon

With a very attacking lineup from Liverpool, Sunderland will look to counter attack and use the pace and power of Gyan to do so. Sessègnon is the man they will look to support Gyan. Lucas' job will be to cover when the full backs push forward and track any runners from midfield. If Lucas wins this battle it will be victory Liverpool IMO!

Come on you Redmen!

PS - I miss the long locks of Lucas.  :'(

That back line of theirs looks a bit suspect. Richardson at leftback will be up against Hendo and a drifting Suarez, plus an overlapping Flanno, and Wes Brown should have his hands full with Andy Carroll.

If we put the pressure on, it's difficult to see Sunderland coping with us at the back.

John W. Henry in the stands time to break his bad luck charm and all that.

Gut feeling is we'll win 4-1. We'll lead at half-time 2-0 with two of the new boys to score, they get one back almost immidiately in the second half and then Suarez will end it with two goals.

Enrique played that well there. He can fairly move considering his height and build. Closed down those 10 yards like they were nothing to block the cross.

2:00 Sessegnon down the wing tries to put the cross in , blocked by Enrique out for a corner. Larsson over it, gets beyond the post and it's a scramble, ball ends in Pepe's hand. Big hoof up to Suarez who earns a throw in, nothing from it

4:00 Gyan backs into Carragher and gets the ball to Sessegnon who earns the corner from Enrique. Larsson over it , Charlie Adam clears, and out to Suarez who is away and free on goal!! He's tripped up in the box and it should be a red!! It's definitely a pen!
