I think the truth is closer to Van Dyk is the ever present CB plus whoever is fit and in their best form. Right now it happens to be Gomez. But if he gets injured or loses form, then in comes Matip or Lovren (unfortunately both are injured currently). It is incumbent on these 3 CBs to show the continued excellence to be regarded as Van Dyk's permanent partner and none of them have anchored it yet. Clearly Gomez's youth and higher potential and ceiling gives him the edge to wrap that race up in his favour ultimately.

Matip isn't regaining his starting place barring an injury. He and Lovern will now watch Joe for the rest of the year - like Joe watched them when he was out of the team. They will, of course, get games for rotation.

No coincidence that the clean sheets have materialised now that Joe is in there (not a slur on Matip of Lovren) he's the best partner for VVD.

And right in time for some big fixtures too and CL knockout stages.

wasn't it just a case of bringing joe back in steady, after his injury (covering for TTA as well)? i always saw the ideal partnership if available would be VVD and joe and, maybe an assumption on my part, thought that was the thinking of klopp, only injury derailed it for a time

They've all anchored it. Up until they got injured, and someone else came in and took the position permanently. Until they got injured and someone else came in and took the position permanently, etc. None of them have been at a level below best CB in the league other than Van Dijk when we've had to rely on them. Every one of them would easily get into any other PL side as their best CB.

I think it was 13 games without a clean sheet and then since he came back in Gomez and VVD have had six clean sheets on the run.

Although without VVD, i felt relaxed knowing that Joe is in that role. Did a fantastic job, and played like a captain.

I felt that his role and performance with this young defense was akin to that of Van Dijk in the first team - organized it and led the same way. It's so easy to forget that he's only 22...

Seriously, we are Clean Sheet FC with Joe at the back. Wouldn't be surprised if we don't concede again for the rest of the season. Hope he stays fits.

Brilliant today with kids around him. I mean he's generally brilliant in recent weeks but beside Virg and behind Hendo. Today was remarkable bit of leadership from him (and Lallana).

Excellent performance from the senior pro! Was a little worried early on about the straight balls over the top and also about Joe getting pulled out wide but he won virtually every individual battle and led by example. Some lovely distribution as ever too.

He's clearly learning from the best and it's great to know Virgil is imparting such important skills. Joe could very well end up superseding Virgil in four or five years. That's what you get for investing in such a top class defender.

I was also impressed by how aggressive and attacking Joe was on occasion. He was such a commanding presence on the pitch for someone who is so young himself.

Since he came back in to the team paired with a centre back Gomez has 7 clean sheets on the run.
