got caught out a few times and he left his defensive line to close the ball down and got done on two occasions but to be fair he must be still in shock at the speed of the english game. Other then that and a few dodgy passes he looked a good prospect.

thought he was good today and will only get better. also, when we do eventually get a new CB i hope to god that he has pace. The whole team will benefit from the defence pushing up a further 10/15 yards.

Decent start from him really. Made the mistakes one would expect from a new player settling into a completely new league and playing style - a few misplaced passes, a few hoofs peppered with a few bad tackles here and there. Both of which can be rectified with more playing time and experience.

I liked that he mostly plays with his head up, has good positioning and looks to move play further up the field. I think he will suffer if we continue to play such a deep defensive line (which I realize is not really a choice for us at this moment). I think he can become a good player if the defense plays a higher line and interceptions are a result of positioning and tackling.

Early days but there are positives.

thought he was very good. you do not want to notice your centre backs, just let them quiety mop everything up which he did. the bad pass aside, he was good. i would say he has a tendenacy to dive into the tackle a bit too much for my liking but diff managers like diff types of defenders.

Thought his passing was iffy, a few too many chipped forward passes....we have enough of that from the bloke next to him.  His timing in the tackle wasn't quite right either, looked a millisecond out most of the time he put his foot in, but that's to be expected.  Didn't really panic at any point though, and did a lot of things quietly and calmly.  As first starts go, it was decent performance.

This.  I also thought that as the game went on he began to get a better handle on it.  Decent first start.

Compared to Skrtel's start to his Liverpool, Coates has done very well.

Tough few days for him. He's twenty and was playing in a back four today with two other good, though inexperienced, defenders. Needs time.

I thought he did ok which is absolutely fine for a 21 yr old Uruguayan centre back making his full debut at a hostile ground.

Got caught out when he was dragged out wide and ended up getting skinned on his arse and also the poor cross the box pass that resulted in Noone hitting the bar.

Will only get better though and I wouldn't mind him starting on Saturday instead of Skrtel. It won;t happen but I want to see this lad come through quickly and the only way to do that is through games.

Will need to be more aggressive and willing to impose his size on the game to really make it in the league, but that will hopefully come when he settles.

Certainly has the physical gifts to succeed, got some serious distance on a few headers which is promising. A solid debut all told.

What a shame that was the last post on page 22 and not the first post on the next page.

Oh, and there was talk that he's asked the press to call him Coates (English pronunciation) rather than Kwa-tez (Spanish pronunciation)
Mr Coates it is then. Looked composed enough tonight. Bellamy was magnificent. Next!
If you ask Smalling and Brown if they'd rather play Suarez or Carroll, they'd say Suarez all day long, because he's not going to bully them or run in behind them.

I was really impressed, obviously he made that rash pass, part of developing and understand other players around him. However I'm not sure if anyone remembers Dan Aggers performance at Anfield for the first time, looked a bag of nerves, developed into a top class defender just suffers with injury problems.

I'd be surprised if he starts Saturday though. Carragher and Skrtel, Kenny will probably go with. However give Coates time and he could become a good player.

Interestig that he played right side and carra swapped to the left.

Seems clear that he has been bought as Carras replacement

Solid enough full debut. One dodgy pass but good that we didn't pay for it. Other than that thought he was very good.

Strikes me that he seems to be a very very confident player, when you consider what age he is. Well able to pick a pass too.

Reminds me of a certain big Fin in a way, am I the only one?

Impressed me tonight, quite good on the ball and obviously dominates in the air.

Few times he got sucked out of his position though, trying to nick the ball when it perhaps wasn't on. Something he will learn though, certainly looks a top prospect.

In Uruguay it's said that he's got rowing paddles instead of legs, lolz. He's quite agile and fast, taking into account how tall he is. I hope he can bring his heading abilities into the equation as well scoring some goals, something that has always distinguished Seba.

I think he showed he could very well become a very, very good player. He also showed that he needs time to get used to a new country and a new style and to get up to speed with his team mates. He will be behing Carra, Agger and Skrtel at the moment, as he should be, but hopefully we get to see him in the cups while he gets ready to be a regular 1st teamer.

He has good positional sense, can head ball over long distance (ala Sami), decent pace (Comparable to Agger), decent passing ability and good in tackle. I love how he used to pass the ball to midfielders and be ready to receive it back (to Lucas and Spearing). I think once he gets to the terms of EPL pace, he will do very well.

Also not sure if anyone noticed this but most of the time in first half when we were dominating he was playing high up and Cara was alone staying back. Also not sure why people complaining about him getting drawn towards wings. Their wingers were very quick and on few occasion skinned Kelly and he has to go there or risk them running at us in our box. He missed the tackle but he forced winger wide and gave us time to get bodies in our box. I am really happy with this signing.

On another note when I watched his display against spurs, I though he recovered ground on Adebayor and made that tackle. Adebayor is very quick and he seemed to caught with him after giving him little head start.

mad reading this thread, i thought Coates really struggled all night, his distribution was up and down, his heading wasn't very commanding in either box and he was half a yard short in the tackle all night, including a few lunges that got us into trouble.

I wouldn't normally post on someone's first game but I sometimes wonder what game people watch, like they have already made their minds up before the game who has played well and who hasn't.

Looking at him last night, I thought he has all the physical attributes, and he certainly isn't slow as some have said, but he'll need time to settle obviously.  Mad dog Skrtel should come back into the team Saturday cos Coates isn't ready at the minute.

Couple of mistakes aside, an assured full debut. Obviously good in the air but he seems to like a tackle too, although it's good that he's not rash. Seems comfortable on the ball as well. Hope to see more of him soon, Wolves might be a good game to have him start.

Hard full debut in that atmosphere and against a quick side playing attacking football. I don't think anyone is saying he's the answer to our prayers yet, but he has a good brain on him.

He doesn't rush in and get carried away. When he was half a yard short he played it safe and closed down angles.

Hope he starts with Carra against Wolves.

With the derby and United coming up Wolves might be an ideal opportunity to let Carra put his feet up. With Agger out I wouldn't want to be without both Carra and Agger for those two games. If Wolves are going to come and park the bus then the extra pace and aerial threat of Coates and Skrtel might be useful.

If things are still tight later on the likes of Carroll, Coates, Skrtel, Kuyt and Gerrard attacking the ball in their box might make all the difference.
