i think it went 1-0 1-1 2-1 2-2 3-2. i think we had just drawn 3 matches in a row 2-2. that was almost a 4th

Actually that makes more sense. We were top of the league around then despite all those draws weren't we? Or at least we went top late October and then didn't win again til January.

On a happier note - Mad Erik! Were they his only goals for us?

his only goals yeah

i think we were near enough the top

at one stage we had played 11 won 8 drawn 3. the 3 draws were all 2 all. i think in each of them we lead until the last 8 mins

i remember paddypower having us odds on and even eamon dunphy saying we had the league won in october. 7 points clear going into one sunday (arsenal clawed it back to 4) then it went tits up

The first European night at Anfield

Forty-Seven years ago Liverpool played their first European game at Anfield Road. The game was played on the Monday the 14th of September 1964. Their opponents were the Icelandic champions K.R. (Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur - The Reykjavík Football Club). The first leg in Reykjavík ended with a 5:0 victory for Liverpool. It was clear for everyone that the Icelanders were going to be up against it the second leg.

The K.R party arrived in Liverpool firmly in the public eye. After all they were the first foreign club to play at Anfield Road in a competitive game. The local papers wrote a lot about the visitors. Focusing not least on their wives! The K.R. players had taken their wives and girlfriends with them for a bit of a holiday!

Liverpool had lost their league game on Saturday 1-0 away against Sheffield Wednesday. Liverpool had in fact only won two of their first seven league games of the season. Peter Thompson and Gordon Wallace were not fit. The Scot Bobby Graham came in for his debut. Alan A´Court took the other available place for a game that proved to be his last in a great career for Liverpool.

The Anfield faithful were in good spirit looking forward to their first European night at Anfield Road. The announcer welcomed the visitors from Iceland before the game. In one Icelandic newspaper, Tíminn (The Time), it was reported that the national anthems of England and Iceland were played before kick off, just like before an international game. The Icelandic journalist reported. "It was strange to hear long haired Liverpudlians - Beatles singing God save the queen." Ron Yeats won the toss and K.R. played towards The Kop in the first half. The Icelandic side played much better than in the first game and according to the Icelandic newspapers played their best game of their season.

Liverpool played in their red shirts and white shorts. The all red kit was not yet in place. K.R. played in as always in their Newcastle like strip. The first half was especially good by the Icelanders. The visitors had the first chance in the opening minutes. But Liverpool opened the scoring in the 13th minute and it was Gerry Byrne who had the honour of scoring Liverpool´s first European goal at Anfield Road. His long range effort from 30 yards up in the top corner was indeed a historic moment. Ten minutes later Ian St. John scored with a good shot from inside the penalty area. But in the 30th minute the Icelanders managed to reply. A good passing move ended with Gunnar Felixson scoring in front of The Kop. The Anfield crowd applauded Gunnar after he had scored.

The second half turned out to be constant Liverpool pressure. Wave after wave of Liverpool attacks came towards The Kop throughout the half. Roger Hunt scored Liverpool´s third in the 50th minute. His shot was not too good and Heimir Gudjónsson should have saved it. This was the keeper's only mistake in the game. The debutant Bobby Graham scored the next goal in the 65th minute. He headed the ball home after a cross from the left. Two minutes later Willie Stevenson scored with a powerful long-range drive. He was even further out than Gerry Byrne when he opened the scoring. Willie´s strike was the best goal of the game! Ian St. John scored the last goal in the 74th minute. He scored from a close range after the visitors didn´t manage to clear their box. Liverpool could have scored more goals, but K.R.'s keeper, Heimir Guðjónsson, was his side´s best player and was often applauded by The Kop for his heroics. The Kop even cheered the K.R. players and booed their own with smile on their faces. But the heat was on the K.R. keeper but he managed some fine saves from Roger Hunt, Ron Yeats and Bobby Graham in the second half. Bobby had the last chance in the final minute when he hit the crossbar. Liverpool had won with a lot to spare.

The Kop celebrated a win on the debut European night at Anfield. But the Liverpool crowd had also taken to the fighting spirit of the Icelanders and applauded them when the final whistle sounded. The Kop even chanted "Reykjavík, Reykjavík, Reykjavík" at the end! The Icelandic newspaper, Tíminn, reported "It was obvious that the crowd had liked how K.R. played." The Liverpool players made a guard of honor and clapped the Icelanders off the pitch. An Icelandic reporter said Liverpool´s captain Ron Yeats shook every K.R. player´s hand. A wonderful sporting gesture on and off the pitch. The players of K.R had made themselves proud in spite of losing 11-1 on aggregrate to the English champions.

The final assement in Tíminn was this. "This game marked the end of our first European experience. All things considered it can be said that all went well. Of course Liverpool won 11-1 on aggregate. But it couldn´t be expected to lose any less to the English champions."

Pretty sure he did too. He was quite the man for League Cup goals wasn't he?! Then Leyton Maxwell scored one in the 2nd Leg. But I'm pretty sure you all remembered that!

It's not quite September 15th, but it's close enough before I retire for the night, so I'll start the ball rolling for that date with our opening CL group game in 2004. Liverpool 2-0 Monaco, Cisse and Baros the scorers. I remember Baros scored a brilliant individual goal late on after replacing Cisse who'd given us a 1st half lead. Both were players who had the ability to make easy chances look impossible, and difficult chances look easy!! We played some terrific football that night which merited more than the 2 goals we scored. Chants of Rafael Benitez echoed around the Kop in injury time.

Little did we know it at the time, but it was the beginning of a CL campaign that would end in glory 8 months later on an unforgettable night in Istanbul. There would be plenty of nights of drama en route as well. If this thread is still going on December 8th then I expect that night to be very fondly remembered, especially an 86th minute goal which prevented us from dropping into the UEFA Cup.

sept 15 matches. kosice 3-0 away, think it was fowlers first game after his knee injury. got my junior cert results that day iirc

the monaco game i did a patent (3 way bet that multiplies up, makes up 7 bets) i had us to win 2-0, barcelona to win 3-1 at celtic, arsenal to beat psv 2-0. all happened except arsenal only won 1-0. won 168 quid off 7 euro. would have been another 1000 if arsenal scored again.

we played some great stuff against monaco. the cisse goal i remember thinking was very valencia esque. reminded me a little bit of aimars goal against us in 2002.

A bit of a poignant one, but Avi Cohen, RIP, made his debut today in 1979.  1-1 draw with Leeds United.

However, a debut I remember rather better was at Filbert Street in 1996.  Patrik Berger came on as a half time sub for Stan Collymore.  The game was poised at 0-0.  After two Berger thunderbolts we ran out easy 3-0 winners.  Foxes keeper Kasey Keller said "I have never seen the ball move so fast in my life. It's a good job I never got in the way of either shot".

What a debut that was. Collymore had been lethargic and this was another in a long line of his 'enigmatic' performances that became the norm in this second season. Berger cam on and just seemed so direct - those finishes were both screamers. He followed it up with 2 at home to Chelsea the following week and once again I thought we had a superstar on our hands. As it turned out we had a very decent player but after that initial burst, and a hat-trick against Chelsea the following season he only really played his best stuff for us under Houllier. One of my favourite players of recent years though, must be the left peg.

Riise's first goal for us, basically running from his own half. I think he nearly got double figures that season aswell. As for Gerrard's goal, the celebration with his hand to his ear down the touchline was class.

Think your being a bit harsh with the 1st sentence as his time at Liverpool was ravaged by a succession of injuries. I thought he was a terrific player who scored some fabulous goals. It's a shame he left, but when he found Diouf and Cheyrou ahead of him in the pecking order then you can't really blame him. He had more talent than those 2 put together.

One September 15th game that hasn't been mentioned was a thrilling 3-2 win over Charlton on a Tuesday night in 1987. It was the 1st of our rearranged games from the collapsed sewer, and Charlton pushed us all the way. They took the lead when Garth Crooks (yes that annoying TV 'pundit') scored a spectacular goal at the Kop end, before Aldo levelled with a penalty. The 2nd half saw Charlton go back in front with a superb free kick, only for 2 goals in 2 minutes to give us the points. Alan Hansen scored a diving header (if you weren't there then you'll have to take my word for it!), before Steve McMahon burst through to score the winner. In the context of September 15th games this one maybe doesn't stand out, but it was a terrific match.

Oh and it was absolutely hammering down when we left the ground at the end. There can't have been many games down the years where it was much wetter going home!

Indeed..

A match that was was won before half-time.
Thanks to a couple to goals from Beardsley and one from John Barnes, and another one in the 2nd half from Beardsley.
We fucking battered them that day.

Grobbelaar, Hysen, Burrows, Nicol, Whelan, Gillespie, Beardsley, Houghton, Rush, Barnes, McMahon
Subs Rosenthal, Molby

On another note, Alec Lindsay made his debut for us on this day in 1969 v Dundalk in a Fairs Cup game, which we won 10-0 and Alec scored as well..
Incidentally, 9 different players scored that night..  http://www.lfchistory.net/SeasonArchive/Game/522

Peter Thompson also achieved the same in a League match on the 16/09/1963 v Wolves in a 6-0 win for the reds...

Brilliant, brilliant read this thread lads, thanks for all the stories, really enjoying them!

Was that the 4-0 game? I remember being at that, think it was the first game against United my Dad had taken me too and the noise and evident hatred was something else! Loved it! Can remember the guy next to me just going ape and shouting 'thank you God!' as we made it 3 before halftime.

Beardsley got hos hat trick in the 2nd half with a great lob and at full time Les Sealey booted the matchball out of the ground so Beardsley couldn't get it the horrible twat.

Obviously if you're referring to a different game then feel free to ignore my comments!

Another memory from that game is that a few rows in front of us in was a Manc in that horrible away shirt they had back then. He was getting all sorts of pisstake. Doubt you'd get anyone wearing shirts in the home end these days though and for good reason. What a game for him to be in the wrong end for though!

I also remember my Uncle came to watch with us and he's Welsh and into his rugby, not much of a football fan at all. I don't think it was to his tastes!

In the past 3 years, we played on this date. - 16th September

2008 - Champions League

Marseille 0 - 2 Liverpoool

Gerrard scored a sublime technical goal from outside the box, he had also converted a penalty prior to that stunner.

2009 - Champions League

Liverpool 1 - 0 Debrecen

Kuyt scored the winner in the 45' minute in a very gloomy Champions League season.

2010 - Europa League

Liverpool 4 - 1 STEAUA BUCHAREST

Cole got a rare goal for us in the 1' minute, Bucharest leveled it in the 13' minute but we were always dominating and going to win.
Ngog scored a penalty, Lucas scored a beautifully struck goal from 22 yards before Ngog wrapped it up in the 91' minute.

i see in 1992 we battered apollon limassol 6-1, rush scored 4. paul stewart got 2. we probably thought he would kick on from there

Kick on or kick off? He did the latter, got sent off in the 2nd leg I think!

yeah we had 4 games in europe that year

3 red cards

used 4 keepers. stewart i think got sent off in one. grobellaar was sent off at spartak moscow, mike marsh i think got sent off in the home leg

4 keepers were james (limassol x 2 i think), grobellaar (moscow away) and hooper (moscow home). we used all our subs moscow away so david burrows went in goal. he almost saved a penalty too

Hmmm... all the treacherous little shits goals have been wiped from the record?

Or perhaps those who weren't having a sneaky afternoon pint might remember that it was 1-1

Remember the Boavista game really well. I was living in Glasgow at the time and think it was the first time Id seen Dudek in goal. It was hard finding a place to watch the game as all the bars had the news channels on.
As I've said before, the Full English is just the base upon which the Scots/Welsh/NI have improved upon. Sorry but the Full English is the worst of the British breakfasts.

I was.  Superb day in Glasgow and a great game to top it off.  Atmosphere in Parkhead was superb that night I think.

And that McManaman goal.  Just superb.
