Liverpool kill off Everton groundshare talk
« on: October 4, 2011, 08:59:45 am »
I'm not sure if this is not an old story from a few days ago but still good news.

Liverpool kill off Everton groundshare talk
ESPN staff
October 4, 2011

Liverpool have ended any hope of a groundshare with rivals Everton, with chairman Tom Werner declaring it a "dead issue".

There has been talk swirling on Merseyside for a groundshare between the two clubs, with local politicians claiming it is the only viable economic situation.

Werner has claimed the Reds looked into the prospect, but decided that they would rather bow to the wishes of the fans and not enter into a groundshare agreement.

"Our supporters are not for it, therefore it is a dead issue," Werner is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror. "We have been told countless times they have no desire for us to share a stadium and we have listened to that.

"Everyone knows the two options we are examining - staying at Anfield or a new build on Stanley Park - and we do not want our fans to be disappointed."

Liverpool's stadium plans have been an issue for a number of years but Werner has insisted they will not be rushed into a knee-jerk decision.

He said: "People can say what they want about how long a decision takes but we're still optimistic of finding the right solution."

I think those quotes are recycled from a month ago or so, if memory serves.

I don't know why the media keep trumpeting that the "groundshare idea is dead," as it was clearly only a vague thought in the first place, that never got off the ground with fan opposition from both sides.  I don't understand why Everton fans would be against it, really; they would definitely benefit more from the arrangement than we would.  It's a terrible idea for Liverpool, and we the fans would never countenance it.

Anyone still in any doubt, whether a fan or someone with influence at the club, need look no further than the disgraceful scenes at Woodison on Saturday as to why we should never, ever share a stadium with these fucking tramps.

If my assistant had not signalled a goal, I would have given a penalty and sent off goalkeeper Patr Cheh. he beeped me to signal the foul. The noise from the crowd  stopped me hearing it, I have been involved at places like Barcelona, Ibrox, Old Trafford, Arsenal, but I've never in my life been involved in such an atmosphere. IT WAS INCREDIBLE

Not one for blowing the bitters trumpet but they're against it due to losing a part of the clubs identity. Say what you want but even when a club gets a new ground, they lose part of their identity so a groundshare? Nah!

To be honest, I doubt that there's much clamour from the Bitters about groundshare either. It's one of those areas where football and economics don't mix. A groundshare, would probably make economic sense for both clubs, but it won't happen the same as it wouldn't happen in Glasgow, Manchester or Sheffield.
