I think the fact my natural instinct to people saying to go for it has been to find arguments to counter it, has clarified it for me. Which was kind of the point of asking.

Take the job if its the right one mate. You can't change the world on your own and your good principles won't serve as a noticeable protest to anyone.
Like stop the oil causing massive disruption, they get a message out but are largely ignored.
You won't get a message anywhere.

Do what's good for you and what you're comfortable with.

I'm not posting this for pats on the back or anything like that but more of a sense check...

I've been offered a chance at a new role at my work. It lines up perfectly with my experience and interests and would be a good step up, and likely a reasonable pay rise.

The problem is the job would be consulting full time for one client, who are a state owned company, owned by Abu Dhabi.....

I have been thinking it over all weekend, and have to give my decision tomorrow whether I want to go for it. I have 99% percent made up my mind to reject it. I'm worried on one hand this is the second time I have turned down a new role and they might stop offering me them, and forwth in mu current position is pretty much non existent.

I've been reading up on UAE just to confirm my preexisting beliefs about the situation there with women's rights, LGBT rights and exploitation of migrant labour etc, and whilst they are not as bad as Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region, it's still not great at all.

I get on OK with my current salary, no doubt a pay rise would go down nicely but I'm comfortable, and I do still enjoy my current role but it's been a long time since I got a raise and probably going to be small when I ever get one.

What would you do?

If you're happy in your current role, keep it. There's no need for everybody to be chasing promotions, unless you're unhappy or can't get by. Also the pangs of guilt won't be worth it.

I'm very much of the view that I need to enjoy my work, respect my colleagues and employers and be proud of where I work so couldn't and wouldn't take it.  If I did it would eat away at me to the point of not doing my job properly, leaving anyway or worse, being sacked.

Stick to your principles mate, you'll feel better for it and if you're thinking maybe it's time for something new then see what else is going that doesn't involve despotic regimes 👍

the thing no-one asked in here, and what would bother me in such a relationship, is that if you're only working for one client in that way you're more likely to be expected to visit and things be slightly more personal and if you disagree fundamentally on well, human rights, things are gonna come up!

I'm also wondering if it was that secure a role. If the client does't want to work with you anymore, that might be it. If you work on multiple projects/clients, losing one isn't the end if it.

How are you meant to dispose of it? Googled it and the Scottish RSPCA (first I found) said you can double bag and bin it. Seems a bit brutal. Not burying it because my dog will end up digging it up and doesn’t know if it’s carry disease or anything like that. Anyone hungry?

Personally, what I'd do is chuck it on a neighbour's property, then ring their bell and make it their problem.

How the hell do I stop Google emailing me loads of promotional shit? 

I've never had them before they've just started appearing in a new "promotional" folder.  I fucking hate shit like this and I can't even block them or sed where I change the settings to stop them!

I just ignore them and every six months or so go in and mass-delete them all.
