I know it must have been mentioned on here before but the state of the roads in the north west is a disgrace…, there has always been the odd pot hole but in my 40 years of driving I’ve never known so many… not just small things but huge pot holes… will fuck your car up… everywhere.., is it a deliberate policy not to repair them ??
What do we pay our road tax and fuel duty for ?
Think it's a combination of negligance over years, the increase in car traffic, and the more extreme weather.
For years, the roads were "ok", so the councils were cutting routine investment, because they had no money. Now the roads have deteriorated to the point where patch work repairs don't cut it any more. The wet weather doesn't help, lots of fundations get washed away, and any small hole soon become deep and dangerous.
Also think driving standards have something to do with it. People drive much faster and more aggressive, with more sudden braking and turning. Modern cars make that much easier too. You wouldn't drive a 20 year old car over speed bumps without slowing down, it feels too rough. Butmodern cars with a wide wheelbase, bigger wheels and better suspension can just blast over it. They are heavier too, so even if the driver doesn't feel the impact as much, the road does.
