.

1985 - Ian Rush bagged a brace with Steve Nicol, Jan Mølby and Craig Johnston also on the scoresheet as Ipswich Town left L4 having lost 5-0.

Does any footage of this game exist?

My first ever game at Anfield, would have been 8. It was a friends birthday so his parents took us. Fairly sure we were in the old Main Stand.
It was a bank holiday Monday I think, I remember buying a bib from the club shop for my 6 month old sister which said “I’m a better dribbler than Kenny Dalglish”

United 2 Liverpool 0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uteltm_sWqA

1980 Oulun Palloseura (European Cup 1st round 2nd leg) Anfield 10-1

en route to our 3rd european cup, we record one of our biggest wins ever with a crushing 10-1 win over the Finnish side, remarkably the first leg was only 1-1

Kenny Dalglish sets up 5 goals, Graeme Souness and Terry McDermott each score a hat-trick and David Fairclough scores twice too. Souness will score another hat trick against CSKA Sofia later in the competition

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR0R8_3fZO4

1988 Newcastle United (Division One) Anfield 1-2

Liverpool lose at home in the league for the first time in about 18 months. Gary Gillespie heads in the opener but John Hendrie scores a fine equaliser and late on Gillespie gives away a penalty which is converted by the Brazilian Mirandinha, who appears to give the finger to the kop in celebration.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQMEZKfVPmw

the previous season we lost only 2 league games all season, this begins a run of 3 losses in 4 games. The result prevents us going top while Newcastle move off the bottom of the table to 18th.

1994 Sheffield Wednesday (Premier League) Anfield 4-1

Although some sites (perhaps correctly given a massive deflection) say Des Walker scored an own goal, many also credit Steve McManaman with a hat-trick. After going 1-0 down in the first half, we win 4-1 thanks to Ian Rush and Macca's hat-trick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMhZxeFY59s  lookng at the replay there is no way it isnt an own goal

Steve Nicol makes his final league appearance

1995 Manchester United (Premier League) Old Trafford 2-2

all the talk is of Eric Cantona's comeback, having been banned for over 8 months after kicking a fan at Crystal palace, Cantona returns and sets up a goal just a minute into the game for Nicky Butt. Liverpool should win though, Ian Rush misses a sitter, we are also denied two blatant penalties while Robbie Fowler scores two wonderful goals.

Having been denied a blatant penalty twice, United get a soft one in my opinion when Ryan Giggs goes down easy and Jamie Redknapp appears to win the ball. Eric Cantona scores from the spot to give them a 2-2 draw. Redknapp nearly wins it at the end with a great free kick

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iKd2gQHPFA

full match there, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ8WVCWuhTM shortened one here

Can remember the same day watching the european Grand prix at the Nurburgring, Michael Schumacher overhauls a 46 second lead of Jean Alesi to take a superb win

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSqTGJP25is

2000 Chelsea (Premier League ) Stamford Bridge 0-3

Can remember Sander Westerveld punched it in his own net and appealed for a free and no one backed him up, even then I was thinking he just looked for excuses.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen rounded out a miserable day. The goals used to feature a bit on dream team on sky one, usually for Monday Bandele (Hasselbaink) and Scott Lucas (Gudjohnsen)

2008 PSV Eindhoven (Champions League Group Stage Match 2)Anfield 3-1

Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring early on, Robbie Keane finally got his first goal for us, while a long range trademark from Steven Gerrard was his 100th for the club

cant find too many highlights but here is a great view of Gerrard's goal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7rRSN-tNf4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv1tRbho45Q Keanes goal

2011 Everton (Premier League) Goodison Park 2-0

andy Carroll and Luis Suarez do the damage at Goodison. Jack rodwell is sent off for Everton with the score 0-0 in the first half while Dirk Kuyt misses a penalty.

I cant find highlights, goals from 2.28 on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLvBu2AyLTE

Afterwards Kenny Dalglish tells Sky sports Jeff shreeves to stop obsessing over Andy Carrolls transfer fee. A tetchy interview ends with
"Kenny thanks for talking to us"

Passive aggressively the Liverpool manager mutters sarcastially "PLEASURE"

2017- Newcastle 1 Liverpool 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJKqr1QVQi8

Coutinho scores a peach but we are very wasteful, and Joselu makes us pay

2022 Brighton & Hove Albion ( Premier League ) Anfield 3-3

I will skip a few uneventul ones

Here Brighton begin life well under roberto de zerbi and their Belgian, Leandro Trossard scores three times in a 3-3 draw.

1982- Ipswich Town (Division One) Portman Road 0-1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPKdzevQfWE

It is hard for some to believe but Ipswich were huge rivals then, runners up to Aston villa in 1981 and us in 1982.

they were also Uefa cup winners in 1981 and Fa cup winners in 1978. the departure of manager Bobby Robson to England hurt them and their decline was beginning. that said they saw us off on this day in 1982, it was our first league defeat of the season. Ipswich end the day in 16th but would finish the season 9th.

We were still top on goal difference from Manchester United.

Mich D'Avray scored the winner. We would however gain revenge by beating Ipswich a few days later in the league cup.

1991 Kuusysi Lahti (UEFA Cup 1st round 2nd leg)Lahden Stadion 0-1

Having won the first leg 6-1, the second leg was formality but if we wanted to improve morale this didnt help, Bruce Grobbelaar went walkies, missed a cross and former Wimbledon player Mike Belfield scored the games only goal. For Liverpool, Barry Jones made his only ever appearance while Jimmy Carter appeared for the last time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJZD6zokaWg

1993 Arsenal (Premier League) Anfield 0-0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrMwN7v_0UQ

33:59 in. Liverpool fail to score for the 5th straight game but at least avoid defeat to second placed Arsenal.

Robbie Fowler starts for the first time and goes close twice, noticably in a one on one.

Neil  Ruddock also goes reasonably close with a long range effort that seems to clip the bar.

We end the day 13th but only 6 points off Leeds in 3rd. however Man United were starting to pull away. It was going to be a long season.

1999 Aston Villa (Premier League) Villa Park 0-0

Stephane Henchoz made his league debut and began a fine partnership with Sami Hyypia, controversially Steve Staunton is sent off for encroaching at a free kick, the replay clearly shows that not to be the case.

Was away the weekend with school in some place in Wexford, unfortunately the group of so called friends I was with did their best to exclude me all weekend so I have not got fond memories of the trip. On this day we had a trip out to do canoeing or orienteering or paddling or whatever the fuck its called. I spent most of the day capsizing into the water. After we stood around in wet clothes on a windy cold day for about 45 minutes waiting on a bus which felt like 3 hours.

One of the so called mates in the group (who wasnt even the worst) then used up all the hot water in our shower out of spite  on me meaning after that  I had to have a cold shower.

Not very nice memories. however I eventually just got on with it and decided it was better to be a loner than have fake friends like that, it certainly made me wary of people growing up. I have been in similar situations since and at least now can just go "well fuck you " and move on

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2SkiE4OYOI highlights here

2002 Spartak Moscow (Champions League Group Stage Match 3) Anfield 5-0

Game was played on a wednesday, the monday I played football, scored a horrendous own goal (Lee dixon, coventry esque), after the game felt very ill and couldnt sleep. Monday night through Tuesday I spent all night vomitting, puked so much I even put my back out. Didnt get a wink of sleep.

Couldnt eat a thing all day, brother rang from work at one stage as my parents were away, was thinking
"thats nice, he wants to see how I am" but no, all I got was

"can you hang out the washing"

Lost about half a stone, by wednesday I somehow went back to work but had to go home at lunch. the match certainly cheered me up.

It looked like Bruno Cheyrou and Salif Diao would be star men for us after that but sadly they werent

a 5-0 win meant we were up 2nd in the table in our group. Can remember two random things
1. a poster called Matt from back in the day bet on 5-0, with the score 5-0 late on, Emile Heskey is brought down for a penalty but it isnt given, he was in the middle of the kop praying it wouldnt be given
2. getting a letter than week complaining I shouldnt be parking outside a local pub to get the bus, one of the days listed was the day I was home in bed sick when my car never budged all day

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a81VYcMBV9M

2005 Chelsea (Premier League) Anfield 1-4

Speaking of sick people, Sami Hyypia had apparently not eaten well in the run up to this and pulled apart by Didier Drogba.

Drogba I think had a hand in every goal, the result left us 17 points off them despite it being very early in the season.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzWoQmD3weQ

2019 FC Red Bull Salzburg(Champions League Match Day 2 )Anfield 4-3

after we raced into a 3-0 lead, Salzburg pegged us back although thankfully Mo Salah got a late winner.

they were some very familar scorers for them.

Hwang hee chan who now plays for Wolves, Takumi Minamino who signed for us shortly after this, and perhaps most notably, Man City goal machine Erling Haaland.

Dominik Szobozslai also played for them that night.

October 3rd

1981 Swansea City (Division One)Anfield 2-2

Terry McDermott scores twice from the spot in a 2-2 draw, Swansea were managed by John toshack, he was only in his early 30s but making waves in management, following several promotions Swansea lead the first division table before this, the draw drops them to 3rd

We are 13th following the game, although not appreciated by his own fans, Big Tosh reminds us of his Liverpool love when in a minutes silence for Bill Shankly he wears his Liverpool shirt

shankly had passed away a few days earlier, this was the first league game since.

https://www.lfchistory.net/SeasonArchive/Game/1228 an article here suggests Toshack will take over from Bob Paisley some day

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjZ7nIcX1zE

1984 Lech Poznan (European Cup 1st round 2nd leg) Anfield 4-0

Liverpool seal a 5-0 agg win over Lech Poznan, John Wark scores a hat-trick with Paul walsh getting the other

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tl_URWg0xU

1987 Portsmouth (Division One) Anfield 4-0

another 4 goal haul for the 87-88 lot, Beardsley, McMahon and Aldridge score before Ronnie Whelan gets his only goal of the season

1992 Liverpool 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

A much improved display, Don hutchinson scores for the third time in 4 games

October 3rd  continued

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0

Joe Cole scores the games only goal against one of his future teams with Liverpool failing to regsister anything meaningful, remember being frustrated as hell every time we had a free kick and Xabi Alonso ballooned it in the crowd every time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBz-fK93U4o The goal is shown here, well worked if you score it, frustrating if you concede it, then again you can probably say that about every goal

Liverpool 0 Marseilles 1

A very poor display, we had a very poor start in europe that season, taking just one point from three games but would eventually power home in the final three games to qualify for the knockouts.

Bolo Zenden featured for them, just months after he played a champions league final for us, Djibril Cisse was a late sub for them too while Benoit Cheyrou, brother of former Liverpool player Bruno also played.

Mathieu Valbuena gives them a deserved win with a superb shot in off the crossbar. Sebastien Leto makes a rare appearance for us and has a very poor game. Fernando Torres hits the post late on while Cisse goes close against his former club when Pepe Reina and Sami Hyypia collide.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgd7b2i0D6Q

2010
Liverpool 1 Blackpool 2

Blackpool are the only side Liverpool have faced and not beaten in the Premier league era, they began life well in the league after promotion but would be relegated back within the year.

Blackpool run the first half with Charlie Adam going close from a free kick, Adam then scores a penalty following a foul by Glen Johnson, who is then at fault again when he plays Luke Varney onside and Blackpool are 2 up at the break.

When Sotirios Kyrgiakos headed home brilliantly at the start of the second half it seemed we would at least get a point, and although he and Joe Cole go close it is defeat for us.

Blackpool ended the day 9th with all three of their wins thus far coming away from home, Liverpool meanwhile slipped to 18th, now just a point off the bottom. With the club still owned by Tom Hicks and George Gillett and managed by Roy Hodgson it appeared that just over a year after going close to the title and losing only two games we would be in a relegation battle. With rumours of a 10 point deduction coming as the club were on the verge of administration with mounting debts, it was a very worrying time.

I can remember walking around my kitchen after just numb, I genuinely began to worry the unthinkable, we could be going down.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JXW45vF6wM

2018- Napoli 1 Liverpool 0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft5f1Y8I0UA

Lorenzo Insigne scores in the 89th minute to give Napoli the win, we didnt create much and in three champions league visits to Naples we have lost all 3 games. Late on I had some small money in a betting account, I think I stuck it on us to win but also napoli to win to cover anything. Napoli were about 10/1. The bloke beside in work never let me live down I bet against my own team, to this day he still asks me every week
"how did your favorite team Napoli do at the weekend"

2022- Liverpool 2 Man City 2

As far as title races go, this was one of the best. Two world class fantastic teams with brilliant managers and players, if it was a boxing match it was like Drago and Balboa in Rocky 4, they absolutely go toe to toe but this time there is no winner.

City probably would have won on points but Liverpool certainly put it up to them and it was a fantastic match.

After a shaky first half, Sadio Mane gives us the lead following great work from Mo Salah. Phil Foden, a constant menace that day, levels for them, he gave James Milner a torrid time, Milner is lucky not to be sent off when already on a yellow he upends Bernardo Silva who nastily lands on his head.

Mo Salah then scores an absolutely wonderful goal, I do recall thinking "He did that against Spurs a few years ago and they made it 2-2, bet it happens again". Sure enough it did as Kevin De Bruyne levels when his shot deflects in off Joel Matip.

I had no memory of Fabinho's late chance but bloody hell what a chance it was.

Oct 4th

Man City 0 Liverpool 3

October 4 begins where Oct 3 left off but whilst this Liverpool team was just as good, city were not fit to lace the current teams boots, although I doubt that team had 130 or whatever charges against them.

Roger Palmer goes close for them but is denied superbly by Ray Clemence.

Kenny Dalglish scores one of his more famous goals as he turns Man City defender Tommy Caton inside and out before finishing beyond Joe Corrigan with his left foot.

Graeme Souness heads the second although Joe Corrigan makes a porridge of it. Corrigan went on to coach our goalkeepers for many years and whilst here, he also coached alongside little Sammy Lee who scores the goal of the match with a wonderful shot into the top corner.

The days ends with Liverpool second from top, City second from bottom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XkrmGIFLns

1986 Wimbledon 1 Liverpool 3

Wimbledon had several promotions in recent years, rising from non league obscurity to first division football, their no nonsense style meant they adapted well and they even briefly lead the first division that season.

However, strikes from Jan Molby and a brace from Ian Rush (one following a hilarious collision between goalkeeper and defender) wrap up the points moving us to 3rd.

Later in the season Wimbledon defeat us at Anfield

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEqO0Gssn30

1989 Liverpool 3 Wigan 0

Liverpool rap up an 8-2 aggregate league cup win, both games were actually played at Anfield as Wigan's ground didnt meet safety standards.

Remarkably, half time substitute Steve Staunton is put up front in place of the injured Ian Rush, despite being a defender by trade, Staunton scores a hat-trick.

Goals from both legs here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-b1vCA0EDg

1995
Sunderland 0 Liverpool 1

Having won the first leg 2-0, Liverpool seal the tie when Robbie Fowler scores a lovely lob in the first half.

In the second half, Stan Collymore has a goal disallowed.

The big talking point comes in the first half, a huge melee following some pretty rough challenges ends with Rob Jones snapping and both he and Sunderland's Martin Smith are sent off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-wIcKGXFqE

1998 Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1

Pierluigi Casiraghi scores his only goal in English football, having made a big money move from Italy, Casiraghi was often the victim of bad luck infront of goal, either being denied by great keeping or the woodwork. Sadly not long after this he suffers a career ending knee injury and never plays again.

Maybe just as painful, Phil Babb in attempting to block the goal infamously slides open legged right into the post, the whole pub, feck it the whole world winces. Babb not only gave himself the worst low blow in history but actually hit the post so hard he damaged his back.

Late on Liverpool equalise when Jamie Redknapp scores a free kick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGhzfcbKrZ8

2003- Liverpool 1 Arsenal 2

Arsenal won the league that season without losing a match, however they could easily have been three down at half time, as it was the half ended 1-1. Harry Kewell scored the opener but on half time an unfortunate own goal from Sami Hyypia levelled it up and in the second half, Robert Pires scored a superb winner for them, although the feeling was Liverpool were very unlucky not to at least get a point.

Hyypia will lose the captaincy that week, while Michael Owen suffers a nasty injury whilst charging down a clearance.

full match here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8VaduG5Sjk   the Owen injury is 1:36:40. He tries to play on for about 10 minutes but has to go off.

goals here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le6M5NosRL4

2009 Chelsea 2 Liverpool 0

Former red Nicolas Anelka gets the opener for them, before one time target Florent Malouda seals the win late on, much like Fiorentina mid week we are very poor and even then I was getting worried that the team under Rafa were beginning to get found out. Cant find clips

2012 Liverpool 2 Udinese 3

Was a really great wedding that day so probably just as well I missed this.

That Europa league group was weird, we would beat Udinese and Young boys of Berne away but failed to beat them at home. We went 1-0 up thanks to a fine header from Jonjo Shelvey before Udinese fought back to lead 3-1 although Luis Suarez did pull a goal back late on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2jmqbuhizE

2014 Liverpool 2 West Brom 1

A largely forgettable game, couldnt remember much about it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twzp7W9BRBU

Though what a wonderful goal that is from Adam Lallana, make sure to watch that

2015 Everton 1 Liverpool 1

Danny ings headed Liverpool in front early on but Romelu Lukaku levelled on half time for them, the game largely petered out then.

Later that evening it is announced that Brendan Rodgers is sacked, we end the day 10th. Rodgers had just started a 12 game unbeaten run, he was in charge for 6 of them but only won one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zX2rLZKnkU

There are two brilliant saves from Simon Mignolet here worth checking out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaWeRmIXkzM here is also the memorable reaction to the announcement from both Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher.

2020 Aston Villa 7 Liverpool 2

Was buzzing going into this as United lost 6-1 at home to spurs, off a free fiver bet i won 235 euro but that was punctured by us losing 7-2 to Villa, we had won our last away game 7-2 and now this.

Ollie Watkins gets a hat-trick with Jack Grealish also scoring twice for them, Mo Salah gets two for us.

Needless to say I am not researching highlights

2022
Liverpool 2 Rangers 0

Speaking of 7s, we might well have scored that or more here if it wasnt for some great goalkeeping by Rangers veteran 40 year old keeper Allan Mcgregor, and we would score 7 when the teams met at Ibrox.

Rangers would lose every group game

Trent alexander Arnold and Mo Salah get the goals for us

Tom Hicks and George Gillett almost destroyed the club

God Knows where we would be today if they had stayed on another year
I honestly thought we would never get shot of them

when fenway were rumoured to be taking over there was one night it looked done, and they took out an injunction.

I stayed up all night waiting for more news, then the whole of the next few days online watching the court case.

When they left it was like a big weight off my shoulders, it was announced on a friday.

I walked over across Dublin's hapenny bridge in the rain, listening to youll never walk alone on my ipod trying not to cry

Couldnt wait to sink a pint and say they were finally gone

Liverpool v Blackpool oct 2010

There was a protest march against those pair ,part of a long running campaign ,to get them out of the club before this game.

My match going days were long over by this point but I’d done my bit as a keyboard warrior, sending mail to RBS and others so now I had to get off my arse and physically do something so I went to it.

It started outside the LFC supporters club opposite the cabbage hall pub and when I got there ,stood around and a couple of lads were trying to unfurl a banner ,which I helped them with .it was the ,” purslow is a cock “ one ,him being as culpable as H&G in our demise.

It was a decent turnout, about 1500 people there of all ages and it was heartening to see so many young people there and definitely making themselves heard.the march went up anfield road to the ground to the chant of “ get out of our cub,you greedy bastards, get out of our club”, to the tune of the sloop John B chant .

When we approached the flat iron pub some of the regulars came out on the pavement and watched, most stayed in and the chant turned into ,” get out of the pub ,you lazy bastards, get out of the pub ,to the same tune  :D.

It was the same when we approached the the ground ,many stood on the pavement gawping but not joining the march, despite everyone shouting to them to do so ,preferring instead to stay in the Albert or the park and ,annoyingly, taking pics and filming us .

It ended on the cleared land where lake street/ tinsley street once stood and speeches were made and the marchers cheered.we’d done our bit and kick off was 25 mins away so it was go in to the match or pub or home.
I had a long journey home ahead of me and duly set off .

By the time I was on the M 62 we were a goal down ,by the time I’d got home the game was over and we’d lost 1-2 and it just summed up the state of our club at that time ,losing at home to a newly promoted side and it wasn’t even a shock and with Roy ,fucking,Hodgson at the helm .

Seeing the apathy of the a big section of our supporters that day and knowing a lot of them in the ground that day ,didn’t give a shit about what was going on off the pitch depressed me more than the result of the game ,which ,losing it I half expected and was no shock given how poor we were at that time .

I really felt that day that we were in big trouble,we were days away from going bust and never mind relegation,we soon wouldn’t have a club to follow.
 Dark ,dark days .

1982 Ipswich 1 Liverpool 2

Ian Rush scores teice, avenging a defeat there in the league days before, future Liverpool man John Wark scores for them

1983
Brentford 1 Liverpool 4

A 4th straight league cup beckons, Ian Rush scores twice, some good work in this clip from Michael robinson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWamDCjEIQk

1993 Fulham (Coca Cola Cup 2nd round 2nd leg) Anfield 5-0

We hear of kids coming and doing well but to come in and score 5 goals like this was just ridiculous.

Liverpool complete an 8-1 aggregate win over Fulham, all 5 goals come from 18 year old Robbie Fowler in only his third start and his first at Anfield.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbEup2C-EaE

1994 Burnley (Coca Cola Cup 2nd round 2nd leg) Turf Moor 4-1

Jamie Redknapp scores twice to help seal a 6-1 aggregate win, with his play time winding down, Nigel Clough scores his last Liverpool goal with a well taken volley

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtwnbIqujyw

1997 Chelsea (Premier League) Anfield 4-2

Having memorably scored two in the same fixture a year earlier to announce his arrival on his home debut, Patrik Berger goes one better with his only Liverpool hat-trick. He will manage only one more goal this season and falls out of favour under Roy Evans but will come back to form next season under Gerard Houllier.

Liverpool kick up the gears in anger when Chelsea controversially level after Mark Hughes seems to wrestle Bjorn Tore Kvarme to the floor for their first goal. Our cause is also helped when Chelsea have Bernard Lambourde sent off in the first half.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiYOMBlCmP0

2008 Manchester City (Premier League) City Of Manchester Stadium 3-2

We come from two goals down to stay unbeaten, Fernando Torres scores twice while Dirk Kuyt gets his first league goal in about 10 months to seal the win.

The result sees us level on points with top of the table Arsenal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRYt6nPPxCc

When we were 2-1 down City had Pablo Zabeleta sent off for a bad challenge on Xabi Alonso

2013 Crystal Palace(Premier League)Anfield 3-1

Suarez, Sturridge and Gerrard do the damage in the first half as we sweep Palace aside 3-1.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v93B2Ifuqk

the result puts us top, the next day Arsenal retake top spot on goal difference after a draw at west brom, they have the same goal difference as us but are top having scored more goals, now where have I heard this before?

2019 Leicester City(Premier League)Anfield 2-1

After a well taken goal from Mane, Jamie Vardy levels for them with his usual goal against us, it appears our old manager Brendan Rodgers will halt our winning run but in the 5th minute of injury time, Leicester's Marc Albrighton appears to get his wires crossed with his keeper and then fouls Mane, James Milner holds his nerve to score from the spot. It is Liverpool's record equalling 8th league win in a row from the start of the season, they are already 8 points clear of Man City who have a game in hand. The next day they lose to Wolves and things are really looking good.

It is our 17th straight league win including last season, though that run will end in our next game, remarkably we will better the run with 18 straight wins just after

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clO6lNMUm0g

2023 Liverpool 2 Union 0- Europa league

Ryan Gravenberch gets his first goal at the end of the first half and Diogo Jota scores at the end of the second half for the win.

Darwin Nunez has a goal disallowed after a powerful Gravenberch effort is saved while Nunez also has an embarrassing miss.

1987 Blackburn Rovers (Littlewoods Cup 2nd round 2nd leg) Anfield 1-0

I cant find any footage of this game but Liverpool win 2-1 on aggregate courtesy of a last minute goal from John Aldridge.

John Wark starts for the only time this season and this is his last ever game for us. He is subbed for Mark Lawrenson mid way through the second half, Paul Walsh is an unused sub. Wark, Walsh and Lawrenson will all leave the club in the not too distant future.

1990 Derby County (Division One) Anfield 2-0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7yErQIvoDA  17:30 in, there is a shorter clip to get straight there but its grainey

Aggressive play from Whelan sees him take charge in midfield, Peter Beardsley then unbelieveably assists Ray Houghton with a ridiculous pass to allow Houghton to score his 3rd goal in 3 games, in the second half, Beardlsey scores his 8th of the season in just 6 games to make it 2-0.

the result leaves us 6 clear of Arsenal and 8 clear of Spurs and Crystal Palace, all 4 are unbeaten while Derby remain bottom. It is our 8th straight league win from the start of the season, still a club record.

1991 Manchester United (Division One) Old Trafford 0-0

Having only signed from 4th division Crewe the day before, Rob Jones has a superb debut, in 65 minutes at Old Trafford he does enough to win man of the match.

United probe us all game but cant find a way through, Mike Hooper brings off a good save from Bryan Robson in the first half, Gary Ablett is sent off in the second half but United only have 9 minutes with an extra man as Mark Hughes is also sent off when he headbutts David Burrows.

We end the day 13th, albeit with most of the teams ahead of us having played two games more, United though end the day top with a game in hand and a 4 point cushion over Leeds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT6nztR18_A

1992 Chesterfield (Coca Cola Cup 2nd round 2nd leg) Saltergate 4-1

Chesterfield take an early lead, in the first leg they had rattled us with a 4-4 draw at Anfield, although they did lead 3-0 at one stage. This time we have too much as Hutchinson, Walters, Redknapp and Rush make it 8-5 to us on aggregate

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CFjcsSdx2Y

2002 Chelsea (Premier League) Anfield 1-0

Steven Gerrard hits the bar with a great long ranger, and the game appears to be heading for a 0-0 draw but good work from Salif Diao releases Emile Heskey, his shot is parried on to the post by Carlo Cudicini but Michael Owen reacts well to make it 1-0. It is the second season in a row we beat them in the last minute.

the result leaves us two points behind Arsenal in 2nd.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbT6eZFnIZc

full game here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbT6eZFnIZc goal 1:52:56

ironically just as Martin tyler says Owen has been quiet, he scores the winner

Good mix of games there.

I remember the Fowler 5-0 vividly. Also that Leagie Cup won at Burnley the following season. Think Redknapp scored a nice goal where he rolled his studs over the ball to round the keeper. See that loads now but seemed quite special at the time!

That 1997 game - Berger’s hat trick was great, especially the lob over the keeper. I was at uni and had a match myself. Came back to try and find my mates, went into about 3 pins looking for them and key missing out goals. Think the o my one I saw was their 2nd!

2007 comeback at City was great. Was that around the time they’d just signed Robinho? Think they had started to get some half decent players. We went 2 down in the first half and it looked like our unbeaten start to the season was over. Torres got a couple and then I think Dirk’s winner was his first League goal in almost a year!

1978 Norwich City (Division One) Carrow Road 4-1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utgwCrqTTjk

Steve Heighway is among the goals here scoring twice

1980 Middlesbrough (Division One)Anfield 4-2

This time its Terry McDermott scoring twice while future red Craig Johnston scores for Middlesbrough who also have David Hodgson in their ranks.

No footage available

1986 Fulham (Littlewoods Cup 2nd round 2nd leg) Craven Cottage 3-2

After losing 10-0 at Anfield, Fulham probably saw this as a morale win and who could blame them.

Steve McMahon scored 4 in that game and is on the scoresheet again here, Paul Parker scored an own goal and Jan Molby got our other goal.

Parker would go onto win 2 leagues with Manchester United and even featured for England in a world cup semi final. He and team mate Dean Coney (who scored for Fulham here) would be playing for QPR against Liverpool in the top flight just a year later. The 3-2 win gives us a 13-2 aggregate win. John Durnin makes a rare appearance while Brian Mooney plays his only game for us.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9GriSQF1bg

2007 Tottenham Hotspur (Premier League) Anfield 2-2

It was a disappointing result against a Spurs side who had won just one game from 8 and were down near the foot of the table. Andriy Voronin got the opener but two goals from Robbie Keane either side of half time seemed to have won it for Spurs. Fernando Torres struck in injury time to mean we stayed unbeaten but it was a poor result and no one was too happy.

Keane would score in the same fixture for spurs the following season, by which time he had signed for us and returned to Spurs.

2012 Stoke City ( Premier League ) Anfield 0-0

Liverpool cannot break down a Stoke side that kick us off the pitch and have 6 players booked. Luis Suarez is unlucky not to get a penalty although he doesnt help himself by belatedly going down after initially trying to stay up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QNiAChFoUo  I think Suarez was stood on in this game but the penalty and that clip arent here. Suarez and Raheem Sterling both hit the post. The result leaves us 14th, 13 points off the lead. This is Stoke's 5th league visit to Anfield since being promoted in 2008, they didnt score in any. They would also fail to score in their next two league visits to Anfield.

2018 Manchester city(Premier League)Home 0-0

No doubt our rivalry with them has been epic at times but this was one of the more forgettable matches. It ends 0-0 with the only real flash point being when City are awarded a penalty. Liverpool coach John Achterberg furiously shouted instructions to Alisson Becker which way to dive for Riyad Mahrez's penalty, Alisson goes the right way but its academic as the Algerian's spot kick is way off target.

City stay top with us third, sandwiching Chelsea with all three teams on 20 points

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_JMa9iX6Oc

Some brilliant action in this clip, I would strongly suggest 5 minutes of your time, thank me later.

Wonderful goals for different reasons, and Ray Clemence brings off some fine saves.

1988 Luton Town (Division One)Kenilworth Road 0-1

On Luton's plastic pitch, Liverpool cant get it together, having lost only two games in the league all last season, they have now lost two in a row.

Mick Harford scores the only goal with a superb towering header, Gary Gillespie goes off injured for us, with Alan Hansen already out for the long term, Liverpool's back line becomes stretched. Gillespie missed the next 4 months and injuries ruin the remaining 3 years of his Liverpool career.

John Barnes has 4 chances in the first half, the first a glaring miss, another chance later on is almost diverted in my Ian rush. David Oldfield who had scored against us the season before goes close for them too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQmM3sR8AjI

1994 Aston Villa (Premier League ) Anfield 3-2

Neil Ruddock lashes in the opener while Robbie Fowler scores a wonder goal in the first half, despite the celebrations being just a dive on the ground, Fowler is booked. Guy Whittingham pulls one back for them, Fowler seals the win with his second although former Red Steve Staunton does pull one back for Villa late on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP81ktzkjZE

2023 Brighton & Hove Albion ( Premier League ) American Express Community Stadium 2-2

It is not a great display against a team that was a thorn in our side under Roberto De Zerbi. Simon Adringra scores for them as we are all at sea, however Brighton shoot themselves in the foot as their mistakes playing out from the back allow us to pick them off and Mo Salah puts us ahead with a quick brace including a penalty. Brighton score a late leveller through Lewis Dunk, while Ryan Gravenberch misses a sitter at 2-1 which probably would have put the game to bed, while Joao Pedro misses a late chance for them.

1982 West Ham United (Division One) Upton Park 1-3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv76pGhJuSE

Video says the match is played in Feb 1983 but that is wrong. Grobbelaar doesnt cover himself in glory for Alvin Martin's goal and neither does Mark Lawrenson for their second by Pike with some very static defending all round. Graeme Souness scores a nice goal but Phil Parkes probably should have saved it. Sandy Clarke finishes us off.

1984 Stockport County (Milk Cup 2nd round 2nd leg) Anfield 2-0

Having won the League cup four years running we make hard work of Stockport county and need extra time to win 2-0 on aggregate, Michael Robinson and Ronnie whelan are on the mark, it is a relative full strength team put out. Our form was very poor at the time.

1985 Oldham Athletic (Milk Cup 2nd round 2nd leg) Boundary Park 5-2

Whelan was again on the scoresheet here as we rounded out an 8-2 aggregate win, former red David Fairclough scores twice for Oldham.

1990 Crewe Alexandra (Rumbelows Cup 2nd round 2nd leg)Greasty Road 4-1

Full match there, for the goals just go here

Ian capitalises on a short back pass to open the scoring, Steve Staunton scores a fine lob, Rush's 2nd goal is his 250th for us, he later completes his hat trick, interestingly this from the 1990-91 season review tape, it didnt include Crewe's goal but Dave Waller has sourced it for this clip and included it.

Crewe lost the tie 9-2, their goalscorer Andy Sussex gets the honour of scoring the first and last goal of the two legged affair.

Rob Jones features for Crewe

1991 Stoke City (Rumbelows Cup 2nd round 2nd leg)Victoria Ground 3-2

Liverpool make hard work of this tie to secure a 5-4 aggregate win. Steve McManaman gets the first, Dean Saunders gets the second after a poor back pass. Stoke pull one back from the spot and Liverpool defender Nick Tanner is fortunate not to be sent off for a handball on the line.

Late on Mark Walters seals the win but Stoke do score late on to make things a bit more edgey.

2001 Grimsby Town (Worthington Cup 3rd round) Anfield 1-2

Liverpool's defence of their 6th league cup ends with a shock home defeat to Grimsby. Gary MacAllister gave us the lead from the spot and it appeared as if that would be enough. Grimsby equalised with 7 minutes to go through Marlon Broomes, sending the away end dilerious.

At home, I was sure it was going to penalties so headed upstairs for a shower. When I came back down my brother told me they had scored in the 120th minute and were out. I didnt believe him.

Phil Jevons who had left Everton that summer, scored a cracking goal and we were out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qclX2H_VinE  The Jevons goal has to be one of the best I have seen against us

2022 Arsenal ( Premier League ) Emirates Stadium 2-3

Was not in good form this weekend, I was off the booze for a few weeks and boredom was setting in. We had plans to go out and do a family day and I was delighted however that was short lived as the mrs took over 2 hours to get ready, having said she was having a shower she then proceeds to go back to bed despite having about 12 hours sleep the night before. After 2 hours I just stormed out of the house.

The next day I was meant to take the kid to a birthday party and miss the game, I thought fuck that.
"I am not chasing a load of snot nosed brats around a community centre and missing the game, guarantee you I will be running around all day while you sit chatting and playing with your phone, you will then give out to me the second I look at my phone. And if I am lucky I will at some point get a little shitty glass of lemonade"

Certainly would drive you to drink. The game didnt help

Arsenal go ahead in the first minute, Darwin Nunez ended a barren spell by scoring although we unfortunately lose Luis Diaz soon after with a bad injury.

Saka put them ahead again although in the second half we made it 2-2 through Firmino. Unfortunately a late penalty from Saka wins the game 3-2 for them. There is a huge row and emotions ran high at their spot kick, in the aftermath Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was accused of racially abusing someone. It quickly died down though and nothing came of it, and to be honest it sounded untrue.

Our form at this point was awful

8th October

I knew it was around now when Jurgen Klopp got the job and when Ireland beat Germany 1-0

Just never dawned on me it was the same day

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVkhtit5wHw

7 mins in listen to Ray Houghtons commentary, it was like he knew

Liverpool wise, former striker Robbie Keane is an unused sub and so is the then current Liverpool player emre Can

I remember not drinking that night for the game, however when it ended I thought, ah well, have the two cans of guinness lying there. why not

Went into work the next day dying, after just two cans? I couldnt understand it, times I went in after 12 pints without a bother. A very weird hangover

A year later I was Dusseldorf, although I was in my bed the lads stayed out, as they got a train home they decided to start singing
"Shane Long's on fire, your defence is terrified"

There was at least 10 of my mates doing it. ONE german lad on the other platform was going mental at them. He eventually decided to make his way over, however as he attempted to cross the bridge in between he either couldnt find his way down the other side or was blocked by security which of course only served to make the lads sing more and laugh at him

Having lot 6-1 to Germany in Dublin in the not too distant past this was a hell of a result against the reigning world champions
