Scored 1st L F C Goal On This Day

Walter Wadsworth ( 1920 )
Ted Harston ( 1937 )
David Johnson ( 1976 )

1920 - We started a new campaign against Manchester City, with Tom Miller nabbing a brace and Walter Wadsworth scoring his first reds goal in our 4-2 Anfield victory. Donald McKinlay also struck, with Tommy Browell bagging one of his seven goals against us and Ernest Goodwin also netting.

1926 - Gordon Hodgson opened the scoring before D ick Forshaw bagged a treble against Manchester United for the second successive season, as we won 4-2 in our season opener at Anfield, with winger D ick Edmed making his reds bow. Frank McPherson bagged a brace for the visitors.

1929 - Forward John Evans was born in Tilbury in Essex. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957, including a goal on his 25th birthday as we lost 3-2 in a Second Division fixture at Derby County, with Louis Bimpson also on target. Jimmy Dunn bagged the last of his four goals against the reds, with Geoff Barrowcliffe and Tommy Powell also scoring.

1937 - George Mills scored a hat-trick for Chelsea in their 6-1 thumping of the reds as we started the season badly, the last of his four goals past us. Ted Harston netted our consolation on his reds debut, with left-back Barney Ramsden also making his reds bow. Harry Burgess bagged one of his nine strikes past the reds, with Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Argue also on target.

1943 - Jack Balmer bagged three as we beat Manchester City 4-1 in our opening Wartime League fixture of the season with Cyril Done also on target.

1947 - Emlyn Hughes was born in Barrow-in-Furness. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield after signing from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57.

1948 - Billy Liddell, Bill Watkinson, Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer all scored as we beat Sunderland 4-0 at Anfield.

1957 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 1-1 draw in a Second Division match at Anfield. Les Massie bagged the first of his four goals against the reds before Alan A’Court equalised.

1963 - We played in front of the new Kemlyn Road cantilever stand for the first time, while part of the Anfield Road terracing was unavailable due to structural work. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest, with Forest’s Bob McKinlay scoring for the reds, the fiftieth time we had benefited from an own goal to date in the League.

1967 - We played Arsenal , going down 2-0 at Highbury. Jon Sammels scored with Tony Hateley putting through his own net.

1971 – We beat Leicester City 3-2 in L4 with Steve Heighway, Kevin Keegan and John Toshack all on target.

1973 – We lost 1-0 at Coventry City.

1976 – We lost 2-1 at Birmingham City, with David Johnson nabbing his first reds goal.

1978 – We lost 1-0 at Sheffield United in a League Cup Second Round tie.

1982 – Sammy Lee scored a free kick with Phil Neal converting a penalty as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Anfield.

1984 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his final senior international cap as Zimbabwe lost 1-0 in the first leg of a World Cup qualifier in Egypt.

1987 - Reserves centre-forward Alan Irvine was sold to Dundee United for £100,000 after just four appearances from off the bench. He failed to score in seven League games before joining Shrewsbury Town.

1990 - Roy Keane made his debut in English football as Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley as Ronnie Whelan played his 300th League game for the reds.

1993 - Ian Rush grabbed his 200th League goal as we beat Leeds United 2-0 at Anfield in the Premiership. Jan Mølby netted the other as Mike Marsh played his 101st and final reds game.

1993 – Academy defender Jakub Sokolík was born in Ostrava in the Czech Republic. He joined the reds in 2009, signing on as a professional four years later. He was released at the end of the 2013/14 season, signing on with Yeovil Town in June 2014.

1994 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick in a five-minute first-half spell as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield, in front of just 30,017 in the first game after the Kop became all seated.

1999 - Robbie Fowler Scored as we beat the Gunners 2-0 at Anfield, with Patrik Berger also on the scoresheet as Dominic Matteo reached a century of League outings for the reds.

1999 - Rob Jones was released by West Ham United, just six weeks after leaving Anfield for one final throw of the dice. He had played 243 times for the reds, famously without notching a goal, before suffering a succession of back problems.

2002 - Salif Diao made his official reds bow in our 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers, with Rovers substitute Corrado Grabbi nabbing a late equaliser after Danny Murphy and John Arne Riise had put us in front, following David Dunn’s opener.

2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano helped Argentina to claim Olympic gold as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in the Final in Athens. Paraguay had both Emilio Martínez and Diego Figueredo sent off.

2004 - Ian Rush was appointed Manager of Chester City. He only led them to fourteen victories in 41 games in his one season in charge.

2006 - Dirk Kuyt was named Dutch Player of the Year, shortly after his £9m move from Feyenoord to Anfield. He had been made their skipper that season, as he scored 25 times in 38 games in all competitions.

2007 - Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva and Argentine winger Sebastián Leto both made their reds bows as we thumped Toulouse 4-0 in the second leg of our Champions League qualifier at Anfield, to progress 5-0 on aggregate. Peter Crouch and skipper Sami Hyypiä both netted before Dirk Kuyt added a late brace as we secured our fiftieth home win in Europe’s premier competition. Before the match, the Z-Cars theme was played in tribute to the recently-murdered Rhys Jones, whose parents and brother were present on the touchline in their Everton shirts, on a day when the city of Liverpool celebrated its 800th birthday.

2010 – Midfielder Raul Meireles signed from his hometown club Porto for £11.5m. He bagged five goals in 44 matches, with all these strikes coming in a six-game spell following Kenny Dalglish’s return as Manager. He left for Chelsea in a £12m deal a year after arriving in L4.

2014 – Left-back Jack Robinson was sold to Queens Park Rangers after eleven senior games since making his bow as the reds’ then youngest ever player in May 2010, moving on the same day on loan to Huddersfield Town.

2017 – Midfielder Naby Keïta agreed to sign from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. the following July for £52.75m. He struck eleven times in 129 outings for the reds as he struggled with a succession of injuries, but he managed to help us claim the League title, FA Cup, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before departing in the summer of 2023.

2019 - Dean Saunders was jailed for ten weeks for refusing to provide a roadside breath test, although he was freed after one day pending an appeal, which he later won.

2020 – Ovie Ejaria was sold to Reading after two successful loan spells. On the same day, keeper Shamal George signed for Colchester United having been released by the reds.

2021 – Kai Havertz headed Chelsea ahead at Anfield, but Mohamed Salah equalised from the spot on the stroke of half time, with Reece James sent off for handling in the area.

I don’t remember much about those wins over Forest and Leeds in 1990 and 93.

1994 - Can’t believe that’s 30 years ago. Vivid memories of playing 5 a side and then watching that at the local sports club. Amazing passage of play, Fowler was a force of nature.

1999 - I was at this one. Fowler was captain and scored against his favourite team yet agan! Good strike from distance. Berger scored a deflected free kick. I remember at the time being really impressed with the young Gerrard and Thompson. Their energy levels were great and they were snapping around the very good Arsenal players all game. Henry had just joined them, played out wide and looked rubbish (I knew he’d never amount to anything!). They’d just signed David Suker too and he had a penalty saved by Westerveld late on which just added to the party. Great day!

2002 - an entertaining game against quite a tidy Blackburn side who’d won the League Cup the season before. We probably should have won, came from behind to lead only to concede a late equaliser to Grabbi who didn’t amount to much for them.

2007 - routine win but more memorable for us plying the Z Cars theme before the game as a tribute to Rhys Jones. RIP

2021 - three years ago already? Losing track, is that the season we ended up pipped on the final day again? We used to find Chelsea a bitch to play against under Tuchel. Their goal was a bit lucky I think, Havertz flicking on a corner at the near post but not convinced he was going for goal. Salah equalised after James was sent off for handling on the line but we couldn’t force a winner. Frustrating game.

Raul Mereles. Christ. Has there ever been a bigger disconnect between what a player looked like and how they actually played?
I don't agree, he'd go to Legoland. Bye.

Think Forest in 1990 was Roy Keane’s debut for them?
I am alone now. I am beyond recrimination. The curtains have shut, the furniture has gone. I am transforming. I am vibrating. I am glowing. I am flying. Look at me now.

I thought that came in a game we ended up drawing 2-2. Around Easter so possibly the end of the 89/90 season?

I actually thought he was good, he went on a mad scoring run when Dalglish took over

That was a bit of a cloak and dagger one, had no idea we were in for him and then BOOM announced

Think Forest in 1990 was Roy Keane’s debut for them?
yeah it was, he spoke it about it recently on the overlap.

Said he had a rake of pints the night before then got told he was travelling up to Anfield, seemingly Steve Hodge was sick so Keane got the nod late on with Brian Clough not telling him until late so he didnt have time to be nervous.

"before my debut Brian Clough said to me you can control it, pass it and run, so just do them three things, that was my career, people laugh but that was my career in a nutshell, a lot of players cant do them things believe it or not, some cant control it or run, some only have one or two of the three."

Whatever your view on Roy about anything, no denying he was a bloody fantastic player, and like he said above he did keep it simple. If you watch old games he does a lot of short passes, didnt always have to be hollywood balls.

I thought that came in a game we ended up drawing 2-2. Around Easter so possibly the end of the 89/90 season?
It was definitely 1990/91 when he made it

I stand corrected on Keane! I do remember a 2-2 at Anfield around then, in my head he came on and made a difference but I’m obviously getting confused!

28th august

1957 Huddersfield Town ( Division Two ) Home 1 - 1

Interesting to see them being managed by Bill Shankly

1990 Nottingham Forest ( Division One ) Anfield 2-0

LIVERPOOL GOALS (ASSISTS IN BRACKETS)
Ian Rush 52' (John Barnes) , Peter Beardsley 83' (Ian Rush)

Game well known for being Roy Keane's league debut as we discussed at length.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsrX6cIuXCk The goals are here, excellent work from Barnes for the first, the second comes about following some very nice one touch football, a goal of real quality, we had a good record against Forest at home.

1993 Leeds United ( Premier League ) Anfield 2-0

GOALS (ASSISTS IN BRACKETS)
Ian Rush 24' (Don Hutchison) , Jan Mølby 39' pen

Ian Rush scored his 200th league goal with the ball appearing to rebound in off his face before Jan Molby scored a penalty when John Lukic rashly fouled Rob Jones. Leeds had won the league a year earlier but hadnt won an away match since, some 20 odd games earlier. However they would win an away match soon after. Saw some banter in a pub then, from a fella who foolishly hadnt checked the previous days results
"Leeds are shite"
"fuck off"
"when did yous last win an away league game"
"yesterday you clown"

Rush's goal was lucky but luck infront of goal was drying up, we wouldnt score an outfield goal for 10 hours of league football, we ended this day 2nd, just a point behind Man United but we would lose our next 4 league games.

I remember being in major trouble that day, playing football on a field, there was a bottle of water, friend agreed to give me some, before I had the chance to get a sip of it he reefed it off me and it spilled on me. Eventually I got a mouthful and ended up throwing the bottle at him. He took it bad and start kicking away, I wasnt for backing down so responded the same, he wouldnt let it go. His sister (in about her 30s) just stood watching. Next of all he puts his fists up. I thought right ok if thats how you want it. Sister still just watches on. fists are flying but missing until I absolutely clocked a pearler, he immediately ran off the field with blood pouring from his nose.

sister was straight around to my Mam and shit hit the fan, gotta question why she just stood watching the fight the whole time though. Me and the other guy did make up shortly after.

1994 Arsenal ( Premier League ) Anfield 3 - 0
LIVERPOOL GOALS (ASSISTS IN BRACKETS)
Robbie Fowler 26' (Ian Rush) , Robbie Fowler 29' (Steve McManaman), Robbie Fowler 31'

Robbie Fowler famously scores a hat trick in under 5 minutes. The attendance was way down, this was our first home game of the season, a match with Chelsea had been postponed I think, the Kop was practically nothing and it wasnt until the final game of the season we got over 40000.

1999 Arsenal ( Premier League ) Anfield 2 - 0
Robbie Fowler scored a belter, and a late deflected shot from Berger made it 2-0. Sander Westerveld saved a late penalty from Davor Suker, endearing himself well to the home crowd.

2007- Liverpool 4 Toulouse 0

Won a few bob having Crouch as first scorer which was nice

2021- Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1

spent the day being nagged moaned and bitched at all day by the Mrs. It was also disappointing not to win given Chelsea had a first half red.

We met them 4 times that season, all ended up draws although two of them were finals which we would win on penalties

He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920.

1923 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netted a hat-trick in our 6-2 trouncing of Birmingham City at Anfield. Centre-forward Jimmy Walsh bagged a brace on his reds debut, with **** Forshaw also on target. John Bradford struck the first two of his fifteen goals against the reds.

1936 - Keeper Alf Hobson made his reds bow as goals from Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys secured a 2-1 defeat of Stoke City at Anfield in our opening fixture of the season. This was Manager George Kay’s first game in charge of the reds, while left-half Jimmy McDougall made his 300th appearance for the club.

1938 - Defender Gerry Byrne was born in Liverpool. He was the hero of our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 when he played for 117 minutes of the final against Leeds United at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins. He also won two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his eleven years at Anfield, making a total of 333 reds appearances and scoring four times.

1945 - We drew a Wartime League match at Anfield 2-2 against Bolton Wanderers , with Phil Taylor and Peter Kippax on target.

1951 – We beat Burnley 3-1 in L4, with Albert Stubbins, Cyril Done and Billy Liddell all scoring.

1953 - We lost a First Division game 2-0 at Burnden Park as Willie Moir bagged one of his five goals past the reds, with Harry Webster also on the scoresheet. Don Welsh reached a century of games in charge of the reds.

1956 – Geoff Twentyman bagged a brace as we drew 3-3 with Notts County in a Second Division fixture at Anfield, with Louis Bimpson also on target.

1959 – We fell 2-0 behind to Hull City at Anfield in a Second Division fixture, thanks to a John Coady brace, before eventually triumphing 5-3. Jimmy Harrower scored from distance with Jimmy Melia heading in to draw us level, before Ronnie Moran struck for the first time, from a free-kick to put us in front. Alan A’Court and Billy Liddell also got on the scoresheet, with all our goals coming at the Kop end in the second half after new Scottish keeper Bert Slater had endured a torrid early period to the game. Vic Metcalfe bagged the last of his six strikes against us late on in this game, with John Coady bagging a brace.

1962 - Left-back Phil Ferns made his reds bow in our 4-1 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, our first win back in the top flight, with our goals coming from Ian St. John, Alan A’Court and a Roger Hunt brace. Peter Dobing bagged one of his eight goals past us.

1963 – Former First-team coach Steve Clarke was born in Saltcoats, Scotland. He was appointed in January 2011 following Kenny Dalglish’s return to the hot seat, signing a new three-year contract four months later. However, he left the club in June 2012 following Dalglish’s sacking.

1964 - Phil Ferns netted his only reds goal in our 3-2 defeat at Blackburn Rovers, with Tommy Smith scoring for the club for the first time. Andy McEvoy scored one of his four goals past us, with John Byrom and Mike Harrison also on target.

1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar, Craig Johnston and new record signing Mark Lawrenson all made their official reds debuts in our 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers as we kicked off another season. Midfielder Mike Matthews bagged the only goal of the game.

1987 - Peter Beardsley scored his first reds goal in a 4-1 win at Coventry City. John Aldridge converted a penalty, with Steve Nicol adding a brace. Cyrille Regis struck the home side’s late consolation, one of his four goals past us.

1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe rejoined basement side Hartlepool United on loan from Walsall. He played thirteen times for them in this spell.

1988 - We beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 in our opening fixture of the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy, competed for by the previous season’s top eight sides. Barry Venison, Ray Houghton, John Barnes and Jan Mølby, with a penalty, were our scorers. Neil Webb scored Forest’s late consolation, one of his five goals against us.

1992 – We drew 2-2 at reigning champions Leeds United with future red Gary McAllister putting the home side in front. Ronnie Whelan levelled before the break with Jan Mølby converting a penalty in the second half before Lee Chapman bagged the last of his six goals against the reds late on.

1995 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on loan from the reds. He only made two appearances in his two months at Roker Park, although they went on to sign him on a free transfer in March 1996.

2004 - Xabi Alonso and Luis García both made their reds bows as we lost at the Reebok Stadium, our first League defeat under Rafael Benítez. Kevin Davies struck the only goal of the game in the first half, one of his four against the reds.

2006 - Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower died of cancer in Stirling Royal Infirmary. He had bagged 22 goals in 105 reds games after signing from Hibernian for £11,000 in January 1958. He moved on to Newcastle United in March 1961.

2009 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos played his first reds game as we came from behind twice to win 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers. Glen Johnson drew us level first after Sean Davis netted before Fernando Torres scored in his third consecutive game to make the scores 2-2 shortly after Tamir Cohen scored and Davis was sent off for the home side. Steven Gerrard netted the winner.

2010 - Fernando Torres scored his fiftieth goal at Anfield, the only game of our League encounter with West Bromwich Albion, who later had James Morrison sent off. This was our 2,000th victory in the top flight.

2014 – Winger Jordon Ibe joined Derby County on loan, bagging five goals in 24 games before being recalled the following January.

2015 – We were beaten 3-0 at home by West Ham United, their biggest ever win at Anfield, with Philippe Coutinho sent off shortly after the break before Danny Ings made his reds bow from the bench. Mark Noble bagged the most recent of his three goals past us but was then dismissed for the visitors, a decision that was later rescinded. Manuel Lanzini and Diafra Sakho were also on target.

2020 – Takumi Minamino scored his first reds goal after Pierre Aubameyang had put Arsenal in front in the FA Community Shield behind closed doors at Wembley. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, with Arsenal winning the subsequent shoot-out 5-4. Rhian Brewster hit the bar with his penalty on what was his last game for the club, the only player to fail to score.

2023 – French centre-half Billy Koumetio joined Union Sportive du Littoral de Dunkerque on loan, playing nine times before being recalled by the reds the following January.

Think this was the game that confirmed to most that Brendan's time as Manager was up. We took an absolute beating on the last game of the previous season and doubts were set throughout the Summer but felt compounded after that result. Can't remember who came in to replace him but think he did alrite.

1987 - think I was watching The Loving Daylights at the cinema when this was on. :D

1992 - think Whelan’s goal was a bit of a screamer. Bit hazy but either some curler or a great volley. A tribute to one of his more famous goals anyway!

2004 - was away in Italy so only had phone updates to go off. A tough I torsuction to English football for Rafa. Bolton at their awakened ‘best’ I think. I thought it was only 1-0 though?

2009- we’d looked a bit vulnerable at the start of this season and had to dig deep for this one. Bit of old magic from Gerrard and Torres to get us home.

2010 - I was at this one. Pretty bleak. Remember it being a very even battle and thinking how far we’d fallen. Hodgson in charge. Poulsen in midfield, Jovanovic up top and looking at the line up, Agger at left back I think. Nice goal from Torres though, and I was sat one row in front of the Directors Box and saw Raul Meireles in there who was in the process of signing for us.

2015 - one of those results that bring you right down to earth after what had been an alright start to the season. All unravelled soon after for Rodgers.

Steve Nicol had a mad scoring run that season, there was calls for him to take the penalty for the hat trick but we made the right call and Nicol would get his hat trick soon

Peter Beardsley scored his first ever goal for us. I watched the end of these highlights the other day, was curious to see the Regis goal as I never had, he took it very well. Some lovely moves in this

1988 Nottingham Forest ( Centenary Trophy S/F ) Anfield 4 - 1

Definitely a very forgettable competition. Barry Venison scores for the first time for us, he would have to wait 3 years to score another. The tournament generated little interest. I think I have seen footage of the game but I cant find any on youtube

LIVERPOOL GOALS (ASSISTS IN BRACKETS)
Barry Venison 50'
Jan Mølby 70' pen
Ray Houghton 75' (Gary Gillespie)
John Barnes 84'
NOTTINGHAM FOREST GOAL
Neil Webb 90'

1992 Leeds United ( Premier League ) Elland Road 2 - 2

LIVERPOOL GOALS (ASSISTS IN BRACKETS)
Ronnie Whelan 44' (Paul Stewart) , Jan Mølby 70' pen
LEEDS UNITED GOALS
Gary McAllister 7' , Lee Chapman 87'

Leeds were defending league champions and we were defending Fa cup champions, a great match amid a poor season for both teams. Gary Mcallister scored a belter, but Ronnie Whelans was class too. David James brought off some great late saves but typical he got caught in no mans land at a corner as he would do about 45 times that season and Leeds levelled late on.

2004 Bolton Wanderers ( Premier League ) Reebok Stadium 0 - 1

Kevin Davies 38'

Early appearance for Garcia and alonso. Hyypia broke his nose in that.

Garcia had a goal chalked off late on iirc

2009 Bolton Wanderers ( Premier League ) Reebok Stadium 3 - 2
LIVERPOOL GOALS (ASSISTS IN BRACKETS)
Glen Johnson 41' , Fernando Torres 57' (Dirk Kuyt) , Steven Gerrard 83' (Fernando Torres)
BOLTON WANDERERS GOALS
Sean Davis 33' , Tamir Cohen 47'

A scrappy win, Gerrard scored a belter late on

2010 West Bromwich Albion ( Premier League ) Anfield 1 - 0

LIVERPOOL GOALS (ASSISTS IN BRACKETS)
Fernando Torres 65' (Dirk Kuyt)

Our first league win under Hodgson but you felt the season would be a slog. The friday some lad was leaving work, he threw a free bar, we had a few liveners in the office before hand. The drink was being topped up left right and centre, I had a bottle of wine in one hour.

So pissed I fell off the bus going home and smashed my ipod screen. I was due to play a match the next day, chest was real bad after the fall, how I managed to play I dont know, by the sunday I couldnt even pick up a drink or drive. Ended up missing a week of work.

2015 West Ham United ( Premier League ) Anfield 0 - 3

LIVERPOOL RED CARD
Philippe Coutinho 53 '
WEST HAM RED CARD
Mark Noble 78'
Manuel Lanzini 3' , Mark Noble 29' , Diafra Sakho 90'

I wasnt married long, as you do be you are still buzzing, I start putting 20 quid a week away for holidays and still had enough for a night on the rip. Pulled into the pub car park on the friday and the fucking cars brakes seized. Cost me 400 to fix. Wiped out my savings 10 fold.

Few weeks later, I had put 70 away and the wipers stopped working, cost me 170, and so came 18 months of misery owning that shit heap.

Thought the game would cheer me up, think I wrote the preview on this site for it, was sure the game would cheer me up as West Ham hadnt won at Anfield since about 1798. And we got bashed 3-0, just when you think Mignolet, Lovren and Brendan Rodgers have fixed everything. Miserable stuff.

2020 Arsenal ( FA Community shield ) Wembley Stadium 1 - 1*

DREW 1 - 1*
LIVERPOOL GOAL
Takaumi Minamino 73'
ARSENAL GOAL
Pierre Emeric Aubarreyang 12'
LOST 5 - 4 ON PENS
LIVERPOOL PENS
Mohamed Salah ( Scored ) , Fabinho ( Scored ), Rhian Brewster ( Missed ), Takumi Minamino ( Scored ) , Curtis Jones ( Scored )
ARSENAL PENS
Reiss Nelson ( Scored ), Ainsley Maitland Niles ( Scored ), Cedric Soares ( Scored ), David Luiz ( Scored ), Pierre Emeric Aubarreyang ( Scored )

Its a bit mad, but the community shields against City (twice) and Arsenal, I didnt see any of them. For this I just spent the day painting at home and only saw the shoot out

1910 - 1930’s defender Alf Gray was born in Westhoughton, Bolton. He failed to break into our first team.

1911 – Forward Herbert Leavey left the reds to join Barnsley after just five senior games since arriving from Plymouth Argyle in June 1910.

1919 – George Patterson took charge of the reds for the first time as inside-forward Harry Lewis, Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and outside-left Albert Pearson all scored on their reds debuts, as we won 3-1 at Bradford City as another season began, with Jimmy Marshall nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. Lewis also missed a penalty, while full-back William Jenkinson also made his reds bow with forward Billy Lacey playing his hundredth League game for the club.

1922 - We also lost 1-0 on a visit to Sunderland .

1924 - Donald McKinlay and Danny Shone netted as we lost 4-2 at Anfield in our opening match of the season. Billy Walker struck two of his five goals against the reds, with Billy Kirton and Arthur Dorrell also on target.

1930 - Jim Smith netted twice as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield in our opening fixture of the season, with outside-left Fred Hopkin playing his 300th League game for the reds. Jack Bruton scored one of his four goals past us.

1933 - Forward Sam English scored his first reds goal in our 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Anfield, the first time we had faced them since their name change from the simpler Stoke. Tommy Sale struck the first of his five goals past us that day.

1947 - Billy Liddell struck a brace as we won 2-0 at the Victoria Ground.

1948 – Les Shannon struck his only reds goal as we won 2-1 at Sheffield United, with Billy Liddell also on target.

1950 – We lost 1-0 at Manchester United.

1952 - We won 3-2 in L4 with Jack Smith, Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. Frank Bowyer struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Johnston also netting.

1958 – We were beaten 2-1 at Sunderland , when Billy Liddell grabbed our consolation at Roker Park.

1960 – Right-half Gordon Milne signed from his hometown club Preston North End for a club record £16,000. He played 282 times for us, netting eighteen times and winning the League title twice, as well as the Second Division championship before joining Blackpool in May 1967. He also won fourteen England caps, and later successfully managed Coventry City and Leicester City.

1961 – Ian St. John struck his first two reds goals as we trounced Sunderland 4-1, with Roger Hunt also on target twice and Brian Clough netting the last of his ten goals past us.

1966 – We beat Manchester City 3-2 at home with Roger Hunt and Geoff Strong both scoring early on. Matt Gray pulled a goal back after the break with Hunt netting again before Jimmy Murray bagging the last of his four goals against the reds.

1969 – Chris Lawler headed in as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday.

1972 - We lost 3-2 at Leicester City with John Toshack bagging an early brace to put us two goals ahead, before Keith Weller struck a hat-trick, the first of his six goals against the reds.

1975 - We were held 1-1 At Leicester City with Kevin Keegan nabbing our goal. Two minutes earlier he had converted a penalty, but had to retake it, and failed with his second attempt. Keith Weller netted against the reds again, the last of his six strikes against us.

1977 - Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case were on the scoresheet as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Second Round fixture. We went on to reach the Final of the competition for the first time that season.

1980 – Left-back Alan Kennedy reached a century of reds appearances, also scoring in our 4-1 defeat of Norwich City at Anfield with Alan Hansen, Terry McDermott and David Johnson also on target.

1986 – We beat Arsenal 2-1 in L4. Jan Mølby converted a penalty before Tony Adams equalised. Ian Rush grabbed the winner.

1986 - Winger Sebastián Leto was born in Alejandro Korn in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He signed from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m in January 2007, although the transfer was not formally completed until seven months later. He made just four senior appearances and moved permanently to Panathinaikos in July 2009 after spending the previous season on loan at Olympiacos.

1989 - The reds lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the eleventh Trofeo Internacional “Santiago Bernabéu”, thanks to goals from Hugo Sánchez and Emilio Butragueño.

1990 - Reserves defender Alex Watson joined Derby County on loan, going on to make five appearances for the Rams. His brother Dave, another ex-reds reserve, went on to far greater success with Everton.

1994 - Don Hutchison left Anfield for West Ham United for £1.5m after ten goals in sixty reds games.

1995 – Neil Ruddock netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to Anfield.

1997 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed from Sydney Olympic. He never made our first team, and is currently back in his homeland, running a soccer school.

1998 - Michael Owen bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 4-1 at St. James’ Park, to spoil Ruud Gullit’s first game in charge. Stéphane Guivarc’h replied for the home side with Patrik Berger rounding out the scoring, which all took place in the first half.

1999 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme signed for Saint-Étienne on a free transfer. He had made 54 reds appearances but was not the defensive missing link we were searching for. He spent two seasons in France before joining Sander Westerveld at Real Sociedad, retiring from the game in June 2008 after a spell back with his first club, Rosenborg BK.

2002 - Jari Litmanen rejoined his old club Ajax on a free transfer. He had only managed to make nineteen starts in as many months at Anfield, notching nine goals in 43 appearances in all, and failed to really establish himself back in the Netherlands.

2002 – Portuguese forward Fábio Carvalho was born in Torres Vedras. He signed from Fulham for an initial £5m in July 2022, debuting as we won the FA Community Shield later that month and scoring a total of three times in 21 games in his first season with the reds.

2003 - Harry Kewell netted his first reds goal as we won 3-0 at Everton, with Michael Owen bagging a brace. This was our fourth straight League win at Goodison, a record for any club.

2006 - Neil Mellor joined Preston North End for a reported £0.5m. He netted 43 times in 151 outings before having to retire due to injury in May 2012.

2010 - Javier Mascherano was sold to Barcelona for €22m, after two goals in 139 reds games. He signed for the reds on loan from West Ham United in January 2007, joining permanently thirteen months later.

2011 – Uruguayan Sebastián Coates signed from Nacional for £7m after impressing at the recent Copa América tournament. He netted twice in 24 senior outings for the reds, failing to break through to becoming a first team regular. He was sold to Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after spending the previous season on loan there.

2012 - Jamie Carragher played his fiftieth game in Europe’s second tier competition as Heart Of Midlothian held us to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League play-off at Anfield. David Templeton’s strike that evaded Pepe Reina with just six minutes remaining looked to have secured extra time, but Luis Suárez scored to send us through.

2012 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll joined West Ham United on loan after bagging eleven goals in 58 reds games since his club record £35m capture on transfer deadline day in January 2011. He netted seven times in 24 games for the Irons, before signing on permanently for £15.5m in June 2013, their record fee paid to date . On the same day, young forward Samed Yeşil moved to Anfield from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a reported £1m. He made two senior reds appearances before being released in June 2016.

2014 – Daniel Agger joined Brøndby IF in his native Denmark for a reported £3m, after fourteen goals in 232 games since signing from the same club for £5.8m in January 2006. He had helped us to claim the FA Community Shield and League Cup.

1986 - don’t remember the game but fairly sure I had a big poster of match day at Anfield on my wall that featured this game.

1989 - don’t remember us playing Real, some tidy names in their line up!

1995.- again, no vivid memories of this one! Looks a routine win, used to like QPR under Wilkins, they normally played some decent football.

1998 - Owen on his post World Cup high, absolutely destroyed them. Berger scored one of his trademark goals too. They’d just sacked Kenny, think it might have been Gullit’s first game in charge for them.

2003 - Owen had a quietly very good record at Goodison I think. This was a result that showed a glimpse of how we could be. Quite an attacking line up with a few more technical players than we used to play under Houllier. Owen and Baros but then Kewell, Smicer and Diouf all starting as well. Quite a bit of work for Gerrard to do behind them! Think not long after we lost away at Charlton which made us go a bit more conservative.

2012 - Hearts took the lead late on which would have taken it to extra time but then Suarez scored to win it. Made quite heavy weather if what should have been a big gap between the sides though.

I remember him being in the bench a couple of times around 97/98 but never getting on. Around the time we had some young Icelandic striker too!

Yeah, rings a bell that. None will ever compete with Lee Jones in my high hopes scale, seem to remember him being around for ages and rarely getting further than the bench.

Scored for Wrexham either against Arsenal or West Ham in that cup run they had. Think he broke his leg in his early days with us but he must have made loads of benches (back with only 2-3 subs) and never got on!

1911 - Frank O’Donnell was born in Buckhaven, Fife. He struck once in two Wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final.

1921 – Forward Billy Matthews struck his first two reds goals as we beat Manchester City 3-2 at Anfield, with D ick Forshaw also on target. Horace Barnes netted one of his nine goals against us, with Billy Murphy also scoring.

1927 - Centre-forward Willie Devlin scored four goals as we thumped Bury 5-1 at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson netting the other.

1929 - We were well beaten as we lost 5-0 at Middlesbrough in our opening fixture of the season. Forward Alan Scott played the first of his four senior reds games.

1935 - We also visited Stamford Bridge, with Berry Nieuwenhuys on target twice in a 2-2 draw in our first game of the season. Joe Bambrick bagged the first two of his four goals past the reds.

1946 - Len Carney, making his debut, scored our first post-war goal in the final minute, the only strike of our opening First Division fixture at Sheffield United, and his solitary senior reds goal. Keeper Cyril Sidlow and Bill Jones both also made their reds bows. The reds had caused a stir by coming out onto the pitch ten minutes before kick-off to warm up, largely unheard of at the time.

1949 – Billy Liddell was on target as Stoke City held us to a 1-1 draw at home with Frank Bowyer nabbing one of his four goals against us.

1954 - Alan Kennedy was born in Sunderland. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, making 359 appearances and notching twenty times before joining his hometown club for £100,000 in September 1985.

1955 – We drew another Second Division fixture 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday with Billy Liddell scoring our goal.

1957 – We beat Cardiff City 3-0 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Jimmy Melia and Billy Liddell each netted inside the first five minutes, with Danny Malloy putting through his own net after the break.

1960 - Billy Liddell played his 534th and final reds game as we lost 1-0 to Southampton in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Right-half Gordon Milne made his reds debut in the same game.

1963 – We lost 2-1 to Blackpool in L4. John McPhee scored before Ray Charnley struck one of his seven goals past us before half time. Ronnie Moran had a penalty saved before Jimmy Melia struck.

1968 – Tony Hateley played his 56th and last reds game in our 1-0 defeat at Leeds United, with Mick Jones netting one of his seven goals past us.

1974 - Ray Kennedy was on the scoresheet on his reds debut as we won 3-0 at Chelsea. A Phil Boersma brace completed the scoring

1976 – We drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion in a League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield. Johnny Giles struck the last of his five goals against the reds after Ian Callaghan had given us the lead. However, we lost the replay.

1982 - Keeper Pepe Reina was born in Madrid. He arrived from Villarreal for £6m in July 2005, keeping a remarkable 177 clean sheets in his 394 games and helping us to claim the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Bayern München for £2m in August 2014 after spending the previous campaign on loan at SSC Napoli.

1982 - Steve Nicol made his first reds appearance in our goalless draw at Birmingham City.

1983 – Graeme Souness netted the only goal of our trip to Norwich City.

1985 – Craig Johnston and Ronnie Whelan struck as we drew 2-2 at West Ham United with Frank McAvennie twice giving the Hammers the lead.

1990 – Scottish reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven was born in Thurso. He joined the reds in 2007 but failed to break through before being released two years later.

1991 - David Burrows struck a screamer inside the first minute after Blues skipper Dave Watson forced the reds to attack the Kop end in the first half, the first of his three reds strikes. Dean Saunders and Ray Houghton also netted as we beat Everton 3-1, our fifth straight derby victory. Ex-reds reserves striker Mike Newell struck the consolation while Peter Beardsley made the short return across the park to be greeted with chants of “what a waste of talent.”

1994 - We faced Southampton, winning 2-0 with John Barnes and Robbie Fowler on target at The Dell. Bruce Grobbelaar and former reds reserve Jim Magilton both featured for the home side.

1997 – Our Premiership encounter with Newcastle United at Anfield was called off following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in Paris earlier that day.

2002 - We signed two goalkeepers on transfer deadline day as Gérard Houllier lost faith with incumbent Sander Westerveld. Jerzy Dudek signed from Feyenoord for £4.85m, while Chris Kirkland arrived from Coventry City for £6m. Dudek played 186 reds games, with Kirkland making 45 appearances.

2006 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Real Club Recreativo de Huelva on loan. He struck twelve times in 34 League outings in his first season, subsequently signing for them permanently in a £2.7m deal. On the same day, Jan Kromkamp returned to his native Netherlands to join PSV Eindhoven after just eighteen reds appearances following his January 2006 swap arrival from Villarreal, although he left Anfield with an FA Cup winners’ medal. Meanwhile, Paul Ince signed for Swindon Town and Javier Mascherano joined West Ham United from Corinthians Paulista for an undisclosed fee. Ince only turned out three times for the Robins, with Mascherano only doing marginally better, with just seven appearances for the Hammers.

2007 - Young French midfielder Damien Plessis signed from Olympique Lyonnais. He made eight senior appearances, netting once.

2008 - David N’Gog made his reds bow as a substitute for the injured Fernando Torres as we held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in our Premiership meeting in the Midlands, with Robbie Keane again drawing a blank.

2008 - Left-winger Albert Riera signed from R.C.D. Espanyol on transfer deadline day for an initial £5.5m. He made 56 appearances, netting five times before joining Olympiacos in July 2010.

2009 - Charles Itandje joined Greek side A.O. Kavala on loan, where he played nineteen League games that season.

2010 – Left-back Paul Konchesky signed from Fulham in exchange for £3.5m, Finnish forward Lauri Dalla Valle and Swedish left-winger Alex Kačaniklić. Konchesky only played eighteen reds games before being sold to Leicester City in July 2011, after a previous loan spell at Nottingham Forest. Left-back Emiliano Insúa joined Galatasaray on loan, while Moroccan forward Nabil El Zhar moved to PAOK in Greece on a temporary basis. Meanwhile, Dutch midfielder Vincent Weijl left Anfield to join Spanish side S.D. Eibar, with midfielder Ádám Hajdú arriving on loan from MTK Hungária. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Jermaine Pennant joined Stoke City on loan from Real Zaragoza, making the move permanent four months later.

2010 – Plessis left Anfield for Panathinaikos, for whom he played nine times before joining French side Athlétic Club Arles-Avignon in July 2012. On the same day, ex-red Luis García also joined the Greek side, on a free transfer from Real Racing Club de Santander. He netted twice in 20 games in Greece before moving to Mexico to sign for Puebla in July 2011.

2011 – This day brought a whole host of deadline day transfers. Raúl Meireles left Anfield to sign for Chelsea for £12m, after five goals in 44 reds appearances since arriving from Porto for £11.5m a year earlier. Craig Bellamy signed on a free transfer from Manchester City, netting nine times in 37 games in this second spell and helping us to claim the Carling Cup. David N’Gog was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £4m after nineteen strikes in 94 reds games since signing from Paris St. Germain for £1.5m in July 2008. Meanwhile, Christian Poulsen joined French side Évian Thonon Gaillard having played 21 times for the reds, while Joe Cole signed for Lille OSC Métropole on loan, for whom he netted nine goals in 42 outings.

2014 – Brendan Rodgers led us to a 56th win in his hundredth game as reds boss as we won 3-0 at Tottenham Hotspur. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring before Steven Gerrard converted a new club record 43rd penalty. Left-back Alberto Moreno bagged his first goal for the club, with Mario Balotelli making his reds bow.

2015 – Fabio Borini was sold to Sunderland for £8m after a previous loan spell, having bagged three goals in 38 reds games since his £10.4m arrival from Roma in July 2012. On the same day, winger Sergi Canós joined Brentford on loan, while forward Samed Yeşil moved to Luzern on a temporary basis. Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi signed from Imperial Academy for £400,000 and joined Fußballsportverein Frankfurt 1899 e.V. on loan on the same day.

2016 – Mario Balotelli joined Nice on a free transfer after a season on loan back at AC Milan. He had signed from the rossoneri for £16m two years earlier, scoring just four times in 28 reds games. On the same day, defender Andre Wisdom joined Red Bull Salzburg on loan, with winger Lazar Marković moving to Sporting Clube de Portugal on a temporary basis. Luis Alberto was sold to S.S. Lazio for €4m after just twelve senior reds appearances since arriving from Sevilla for £6.8m in June 2013. Meanwhile, defender Álvaro Arbeloa joined West Ham United from Real Madrid on a free transfer and forward Rickie Lambert left West Bromwich Albion to sign for Cardiff City.

2017 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed from Arsenal for £35m, so far scoring thirteen times in 87 games as well as suffering a serious injury. He made it back to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and then helped us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.. On the same day, forward Divock Origi joined VfL Wolfsburg on loan, for whom he struck six times in 34 outings.

2018 – Defender Corey Whelan joined Crewe Alexandra on loan, scoring once in eighteen games for the Alex

2019 – Roberto Firmino scored his fiftieth League goal late on as we won 3-0 at Burnley. Chris Wood put through his own net with Sadio Mané also on target before the break. Mané had a much-hyped, short-lived argument with Mohamed Salah as he was substituted.

2020 – Midfielder Tyler Morton signed professional terms. He penned a new contract in January 2021, featuring in the FA Youth Cup Final defeat to Aston Villa four months later. He broke through to make nine senior appearances in 2021/22.

2021 – Midfielder Jake Cain joined Newport County on loan, winger Sheyi Ojo moved to Millwall for the season, while winger Luis Longstaff headed north to Queen’s Park for the upcoming campaign. On the same day, centre-half Rhys Williams signed a new contract and then moved on to Swansea City on loan. Meanwhile, centre-half Nat Phillips and club skipper Jordan Henderson both penned new deals with the reds.

2022 - Alexander Isak netted on his debut for Newcastle United, having a second strike ruled out for offside before Roberto Firmino equalised at Anfield after an hour. Fábio Carvalho nabbed a very late winner during a scramble from a corner.

2022 – Left-back Owen Beck joined Bolton Wanderers on loan, appearing nine times for the League One outfit.

2023 – Phillips moved on to Celtic on loan, playing eight times before being recalled in January.

I remember him being in the bench a couple of times around 97/98 but never getting on. Around the time we had some young Icelandic striker too!
Hauker ingi gudnason?

I remember them names on the bench but not playing

Reason I remember his name, I managed us on a version of championship manager. It took me 9 years to win the league, following season, last game I needed to win and Arsenal to drop points. Last minute, Arsenal are leading and we are drawing.

Gudnason scores a 90th minute winner and I win my game, match ends, turns out Arsenal have dropped points with a late goal so I win the league again thanks to Gudnason. Bet you didnt think you would ever hear that said :D

That’s the boy!

Funny looking at the old line ups. Bad to admit but I’ve only just started doing it but so many historic names. Want I didn’t know was there was a time when Bully Liddell and Roger Hunt played together (on this day in 1960)! In division Two no less. Not sure I ever knew that.

I’ll post more later but I was at that Derby in 1991. Burrows of all people smashed one in after about 40 seconds! And Saunders scored a good one too.I do remember Newell scoring for them and Beardsley playing too. One weird memory, our seats were about row 5 of the Kremlin. We had a good goal disallowed and everyone was in uproar. It was a glorious sunny day, and yet for a minute I thought it was raining. Think the amount of people screaming abuse at the ref and linesman had it spraying saliva everywhere. Lovely stuff. :D

Henry Welfare(1966)

1892 - We played our first ever game, beating reigning Midland League champions Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly that kicked off at Anfield at 5.30pm on a Thursday evening.

1894 - We played our first ever First Division game, drawing 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Bradshaw putting the reds in front before Coombe Hall equalised for the home side. Unfortunately, we were relegated at the end of the season. Outside-left John Drummond played the first of eighteen senior reds games, with keeper Bill McCann making the first of his seventeen outings.

1896 - George Allan struck twice as we won 2-1 at The Wednesday in Tom Watson’s first game as Manager, and first game in a new kit of red shirts and white shorts. Right-half John McCartney reached a century of reds appearances in this game.

1897 - We benefited from a Peter Meecham own goal as our Goodison Park friendly ended 1-1.

1900 - Right-back Tom Robertson made his reds bow as we beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at Anfield in another season opener. Tommy Robertson, Charlie Satterthwaite and Sam Raybould struck the goals as Alex Raisbeck captained the side at the age of just 21 years and 249 years, remaining the club’s youngest ever captain until Curtis Jones in February 2020.

1904 - Ned Doig became our oldest ever debutant, aged 37 years and 307 days, when he played in our 2-0 opening day home defeat of Burton United in the Second Division, thanks to a Robbie Robinson brace. Half-back Jimmy Hughes played the first of his fifteen reds games.

1906 - Joe Hewitt bagged the only goal of our game against Stoke at Anfield as the Kop stand was used for the first time, in scorching temperatures, although it was not yet known by that name. After the previous season’s title success, the board had decided to demolish what was known as the Oakfield Road Embankment, or Walton Breck Road End, and replace it with a huge bank of rubble and cinders.

1908 - We kicked off the season by beating Aston Villa 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Robbie Robinson and Joe Hewitt and a Tom Chorlton penalty.

1910 - William Stuart signed from Bolton Wanderers. He scored once in five outings, moving on to Wrexham in 1912.

1912 - Elisha Scott signed for the reds. He played 468 times in eighteen seasons at Anfield, winning two League titles before joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934.

1913 - Tom Miller was on target following a fine dribble to open the scoring in our 1-1 draw at Derby County, with half-back Tommy Fairfoul making his reds bow. Horace Barnes struck one of his nine goals past us.

1919 - We faced the Gunners, when Harry Chambers and Fred Pagnam scored in a 3-2 home defeat. Bert White bagged a brace, with Billy Blyth also netting for the visitors.

1920 - Tom Miller struck at The Hawthorns, his fiftieth League goal and final strike for the club.

1923 - Our game against West Brom ended goalless at Anfield.

1928 – Left-half Jimmy McDougall scored his first reds goal as we lost 3-1 at Villa Park. Joe Beresford struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Len Capewell scoring the last of his six past us and Dicky York also on target. Left-back Donald McKinlay was making his 434th and final reds appearance.

1930 - Vic Watson netted the last four of his nine goals past us as we were crushed 7-0 at West Ham United in a game that kicked off at 6pm. Stan Earle grabbed the final two of his four strikes against the reds, with Wilfred James also scoring as keeper Arthur Riley reached a century of reds outings.

1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie joined Millwall on trial, moving on permanently to Rochdale a month later. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930.

1934 - Ted Drake and Ray Bowden both grabbed trebles as we were humbled 8-1 at Arsenal who were on their way to a third consecutive League title, with outside-left Alf Hanson grabbing our consolation and Drake having another effort ruled out for a push. Cliff Bastin scored the final goal of his four against us, with Jack Crayston also netting.

1937 – Forward Ted Harston scored his final two reds goals in our 3-2 home defeat of Portsmouth. Berry Nieuwenhuys also struck for the reds, with Jock Anderson bagging the first two of his four goals past us.

1951 – Inside-forward Willie Fagan played his 182nd and final reds game as we beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 in a First Division fixture at Anfield. Billy Liddell and Kevin Baron struck our goals, while Vic Metcalfe netted one of his six strikes against the reds.

1954 – Plymouth Argyle held us to a 3-3 draw in the Second Division at Anfield. John Evans was on target, with Alan Arnell scoring twice late on.

1956 – We beat Grimsby Town 3-2 in a home Second Division encounter. Louis Bimpson struck twice, with Alan Arnell also on target as Bob Crosbie netted a brace for the visitors.

1959 – We lost a Second Division game 1-0 at Bristol City, with centre-half D ick White reaching a century of League outings for the club.

1962 - Ian Callaghan and Ian St. John struck as we beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield.

1965 - We left Bramall Lane with a goalless draw.

1966 – Forward Harry Welfare died in Angra dos Reis, Brazil. He joined the reds from Northern Nomads in 1912, notching once in four outings before signing for Wrexham the following year. He later had a very successful career in Brazil, helping Fluminense to claim the title three times in succession while bagging 163 goals in just 166 games.

1971 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 300th League game for the reds in our 1-0 defeat at Manchester City.

1973 – We drew a top-flight encounter 1-1 at Filbert Street. John Toshack headed us into the lead after the break, but Alan Birchenall equalised with the last of his four goals against us.

1974 – Former reserves keeper Michael Stensgaard was born in Copenhagen. The Dane was signed by Roy Evans but never played a first team game for the reds, despite being named on the bench 28 times.

1979 - Colin Irwin scored his first senior reds goal, although it was not enough to prevent us going down to a 3-2 League defeat at The Dell, with David Johnson grabbing our other goal. Charlie George scored the last of his five goals past us, with Phil Boyer and Trevor Hebberd also on target for the home side.

1981 – Middlesbrough left L4 with a point. David Shearer bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Phil Neal equalising from the spot.

1984 – Queens Park Rangers held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Ronnie Whelan was on target, with Paul Walsh having two goals disallowed.

1989 – Forward Daniel Sturridge was born in Birmingham. He signed from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013, netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games before being released in June 2019.

1990 - Peter Beardsley and John Barnes netted in our 2-1 home victory over Aston Villa with David Platt on target for the visitors.

1992 - Mark Wright struck his first reds goal, in a 1-1 draw at home to his former club Southampton after Kerry Dixon had put the visitors in front with his seventh and final goal against the reds. UEFA President Lennart Johansson officially opened the Centenary Stand prior to the game.

1993 - Phil Babb scored his first Coventry City goal in their 1-0 defeat of the reds at Highfield Road, as Rob Jones was sent off for receiving two yellow cards in the space of three minutes. David Burrows played his 193rd and final reds game, against one of his future employers.

1993 – Ex-reds left-back Jack Robinson was born in Warrington. He became the club’s then youngest ever player when he debuted at Hull City in May 2010 aged just sixteen years and 250 days. He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014, scoring twice in 39 outings before moving on to Nottingham Forest in June 2018.

1994 - Phil Babb signed from Coventry City for a club record £3.6m, also a British record fee for a defender. He struck once in 170 reds appearances in his six years at Anfield, before being released on a free transfer to Sporting Clube de Portugal.

1996 - Patrik Berger signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £3.25m, following an impressive Euro ’96. He scored 35 times in 196 reds games, before joining Portsmouth in June 2003.

2001 - All of England's goals in their sensational 5-1 win over Germany in Munich were scored by reds. Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick, with Steven Gerrard nabbing his first international goal and Emile Heskey also on target. Dietmar Hamann was on the losing side, while Nick Barmby, Jamie Carragher and ex-red Steve McManaman all also appeared.

2003 - Alou Diarra joined Bastia on loan. He eventually left Anfield permanently to join Racing Club de Lens for £2m in June 2005, without ever playing a first-class reds game.

2007 - Ryan Babel scored his first reds goal as we thumped Derby County 6-0 at Anfield to go into the international break on top of the table for the first time in five seasons. Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres each bagged a brace, with Andriy Voronin also on target.

2008 - Right-back Steve Finnan moved in the opposite direction, after one goal in 217 appearances since signing from Fulham for £3.5m in July 2003. On the same day, second string keeper Péter Gulácsi signed permanently from MTK Hungária, having spent the previous season on loan at Anfield.

2013 Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of David Moyes’ Manchester United’s League visit to Anfield in just the fourth minute.

2014 – Centre-half Sebastián Coates joined Sunderland on loan, having failed to break through to the first team. On the same day, winger Oussama Assaidi returned to Stoke City on a temporary basis, while Hungarian forward Krisztián Adorján left Anfield to sign for Italian Serie C side Novara Calcio.

2015 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori joined Aston Villa on loan, failing to make a senior appearance before being recalled four months later.

2017 – Keeper David Martin signed for Millwall, only making one senior appearance in his first campaign with the Lions.

2018 – New keeper Alisson Becker was robbed while trying to play out from the back leading to Rachid Ghezzal’s consolation as we won 2-1 at Leicester City. Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino had both struck before the break to give us a two-goal lead.

2020 – Young keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle signed for Cambridge United, having been released by the reds three months earlier. On the same day, centre-half Rhys Williams signed a new contract while Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan took over as Chief Executive Officer.

2022 – A host of young reds forwards moved off on loan, with Jack Bearne joining Kidderminster Harriers, Paul Glatzel returning to Tranmere Rovers, Fidel O’Rourke heading to Caernarfon Town and Max Woltman moving to Doncaster Rovers. On the same day, Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo arrived for the season from Juventus for €4.5m, only playing one game in his time at Anfield. Meanwhile, ex-reds midfielder Adam Phillips joined Barnsley from Burnley, with defender Martin Kelly signing for West Bromwich Albion.

2023 – Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch arrived for a reported €40m from Bayern München, netting four times in 38 outings in his first season, already helping us to claim the League Cup. Three youngsters left the club on loan as midfielder Tyler Morton moved to Hull City, left-back James Norris joined Tranmere Rovers and midfielder Luca Stephenson headed to Barrow as midfielder Bobby Clark signed a new contract with the reds. On the same day, centre-forward Andy Carroll joined French side Amiens SC on a free transfer from Reading while keeper Dean Bouzanis also left the Royals, re-joining Sutton United. Divock Origi moved to Nottingham Forest on loan from AC Milan, while Liam Millar joined Preston North End from Basel on a temporary basis.

Really don’t remember much about those early era Premier League games - the draw at home to Southampton who had some proper throwback to another era names in their line up! Vaguely remember the Coventry defeat with Babb scoring for them and Rob Jones getting sent off.

1990 - another one I was at. Barnes scored quite a famous late winner at the Kop end, curling it (brilliantly!) with his right foot. I think he took quite a bit of stick from Villa fans for that summer’s World Cup where their golden boy David Platt had starred. Put him in his place on this day though.

2013 - our 3rd 1-0 win in a row to start the season. Pretty bad given his the season is best known for shipping plenty but scoring even more.

1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon, forward James Stott and reds legend Matt McQueen also made their debuts in this game. This was also the first ever League game staged at the Paradise Ground.

1899 – Inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter scored on his reds bow, as we lost 3-2 at Stoke in our season opener, with skipper Alex Raisbeck also on target and forward Peter Kyle also making his reds bow. Billy Maxwell bagged two of his six goals against the reds, with Jack Kennedy also scoring.

1901 - We kicked off our season with a goalless draw at Small Heath, who were later to become known as Birmingham City.

1905 - We lost 3-1 at Woolwich Arsenal with Bobby Robinson bagging our consolation, and Sam Raybould missing a penalty in our first game of the season. Jack Parkinson broke his wrist in this match, keeping him out of the side for six months. We finished the game with nine men after Billy Dunlop twisted his knee. Tim Coleman netted the first of his nine goals against the reds, with ex-red CharlIe Satterthwaite and Jimmy Blair also on the scoresheet.

1907 - Charlie Hewitt also netted on his debut, as we started another season with a 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest. Enoch West struck the first of his eight goals against the reds, with Harry Green and Ted Hughes also on target.

1911 - We travelled to the Manor Ground to play Arsenal for another season opener, when John McConnell scored his only reds goal with Samual Gilligan also netting as we left with a 2-2 draw.

1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship.

1914 - Billy Lacey, Arthur Metcalf, Jimmy Nicholl and Jackie Sheldon all struck as we won our opening First Division fixture 4-3 against Bolton Wanderers , Evan Jones scored, with Joe Smith grabbing two of his twelve goals against us.

1916 - Fred Pagnam, Arthur Goddard and Jack Bamber netted as we won a Wartime League match 3-1 against Bolton Wanderers .

1922 - We lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Highbury, thanks to an Arthur Hutchins penalty.

1925 – Matt McQueen reached a century of League games in charge as we beat Notts County 2-0 at Anfield. Billy Flint put through his own net, with D ick Forshaw also scoring inside the opening half hour.

1931 - Dave Wright bagged a brace in a 2-2 top-flight draw against Bolton Wanderers as George Gibson scored the final goal of his five past us, with Ray Westwood netting the first of his nine.

1933 – We beat Sheffield United 3-2 at Anfield. Sam English added to a Gordon Hodgson brace after Peter Spooner had given the Blades an early lead. Jimmy Dunne bagged one of his eleven goals past us late on after Mick Killourhy had sent a spot-kick wide.

1936 – We were trounced 6-2 at Portsmouth with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting our goals as inside-left Syd Roberts played his 62nd and final reds game. Fred Worrall scored one of his four goals against the reds, Jack Weddle struck the last of his five, Cliff Parker bagged two of his five and Billy Bagley also scored twice.

1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them.

1938 – Scottish centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw signed for South Liverpool after four goals in 291 appearances since signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He was only with South Liverpool for three days while the reds negotiated his £600 transfer to Third Lanark.

1939 - Cyril Done scored the only goal of the game on his reds debut at home to Chelsea, the day after Germany invaded Poland, and the day before Britain declared war, which resulted in the cancellation of the football season, so he had to wait until October 1946 to make his official reds bow. Full-back Jim Harley was sent off.

1950 - Jack Balmer struck his hundredth reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Aston Villa.

1953 - We also faced the Geordies, leaving St. James’ Park on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, with the legendary Jackie Milburn and Vic Keeble adding to the last two of Robert Mitchell’s eight strikes against the reds.

1967 – Tony Hateley and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion.

1972 - Keeper Frank Lane played the first of his two senior reds games, unfortunately conceding an own goal, often attributed to Alan Hinton, as we lost 2-1 at League champions Derby County, despite John Toshack putting us in front. Midfielder Peter Cormack also made his reds bow in this match. John O’Hare scored the last of his six goals past us for the home side.

1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0.

1980 – We thumped Bradford City 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the first time. Kenny Dalglish struck twice, with Ray Kennedy and David Johnson also scoring.

On the same day, Paul Stewart joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He scored twice in ten appearances for Wolves, and later joined Burnley and Sunderland on loan, having slipped out of the first team picture at Anfield.

2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020.

2002 - We were held at home by Newcastle United to a 2-2 draw in the 200th match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Ex-United player Dietmar Hamann struck before Michael Owen converted a penalty. However, late goals from Gary Speed and one of Alan Shearer’s eight past us levelled the match.

2012 – Loanee Nuri Sahin made his reds bow as the Gunners comfortably won 2-0 at Anfield, with Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla bagging the goals.

2013 – A whole host of transfers took place on deadline day, with forward Fabio Borini joining Sunderland on loan, while ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena also signed for the Black Cats on a free transfer from Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli. Two centre-halves arrived at Anfield, with Mamadou Sakho arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m and Tiago Ilori signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m.
