I went that Watford game, my overriding memory of it is Dominic Matteo allowing a ball to bounce, to control it with his head and it going out for a throw. It was grim.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohyvLavuW8k

I remember having a bad feeling about that game, I thought it would end up like that Barnsley home game in 1997 and it was.

Matteo looks bad in those highlights, the goal he hesitates, possibly put off by Carragher slipping.

Berger missed a sitter, good save from big Sander at the beginning

1993 - remember being in London for the weekend with my parents and ‘seeing’ the goals go in on Teletext! Think Carlton Palmer was sent off for them in the first half.

2004 - start of the Rafa era. Cisse scored on league debut but I think a draw was a fair result.

2016 - crazy game! We should have been 1 down as Walcott missed a penalty, then he did score a minute or two later and we were definitely second best until Coutinho smashed in that outrageous free kick. Then it all clicked and we scored some great goals to go 4-1, before nearly blowing it late on. A sign of the rollercoaster that first half of the season was. 7 goal thriller and I think 5 goals were scored by ex Southampton players (all of theirs, plus Mané and Lallana for us).

Yeah, was quite hard to get a straight red in those days! Especially for a tackle in the first half. Remember Clough scoring both and there being quite a lot of hope that’s we’d found another classic Liverpool number 7. Think he then scored away at QPR in midweek and we followed that up with a 5-0 win at Swindon and optimism was pretty high. Then it all went to shit pretty quickly!

We lost 4 in a row not long after that I think

Clough scored 4 in his first 4, think he only ever scored another 4 in all the time he stayed here

2004 - Djibril Cissé scored his first reds goal as we held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane, with Jermain Defoe bagging the home side’s equaliser.

2016 – Forward Sadio Mané struck on his reds bow as we won a pulsating match 4-3 at Arsenal, with centre-back Ragnar Klavan and midfielder Gini Wijnaldum also debuting. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty from Theo Walcott, a club record fifth in the Premier League, but he put the home side in front soon afterwards. Philippe Coutinho converted a free-kick in first-half stoppage time with Adam Lallana, Coutinho and then Mané putting us 4-1 in front. However, future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers reduced the deficit, although we hung on to win.

2019 – We claimed the UEFA Super Cup for the fourth time, beating Chelsea 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out in Istanbul after our meeting ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, and 2-2 after extra time. Olivier Giroud scored the seventh of his eight goals past us to date in the first half, with a Sadio Mané brace either side of the full-time whistle putting us ahead. Jorginho converted a debatable penalty, before the match was decided from twelve yards. Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Divock Origi, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all scored before Adrián saved from Tammy Abraham. Joël Matip reached a century of reds games that night.

2021 – Mohamed Salah struck as we won 3-0 at Norwich City, so netting is his fifth consecutive opening League game of the season, a Premier League first. Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino had already scored.

2023 - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Beşiktaş JK, having been released by the reds earlier that summer. He struck four times in thirty outings during his first campaign in Turkey.

My thoughts:

20 years since Rafa's first game  >:( (Probably would have been the qualifier with Graz actually). Who knew what would follow at the conclusion of the season. Hopefully some sort of celebration next May to remember what is possibly our most special success. Ideally with some new trophies in the bag!

2016. Probably my favourite ever first game of the season. I didn't really think we'd done much in that window so expected a first day defeat at a ground we'd not had a great record at. Coutinho's freekick was special and I remember we scored early on in the 2nd half through Lallana with a debut assist from Gini. He chipped in with a few assists that season. The third was glorious passing football and finished cleverly from Coutinho (did Clyne get an assist there?). Mane's was just laughable, I have no idea how or fucking why he scored it  ;D the nervy ending suggested we had a lot more to do and defeat at Burnley the next week didn't really fill me with hope. It ended up being an important season with some decent football. At the turn of the year we blew a really good chance to put ourselves in a title fight, we wouldn't have beaten that Chelsea team to it but we should never have been hanging on to fourth until the final day. Crazy that the Arsenal game was eight years ago though, every time I view this thread the passage of time disgusts me.

The Super Cup was another lovely Istanbul night. Was nice to see Chelsea finally make it there  ;) Classic Mane and can't forget Adrian's save to win it.

Salah loves the opening game doesn't he. Last season the only one he hasn't scored in, but did get the nice assist for Diaz. You could tell early on we'd be back to a really good level that season, even with Konate being the only signing. Nearly turned out to be the season of seasons but despite the horrible endings it'll go down in club history.

Always liked the Ox. Trophies have followed him really. A few FA Cups with Arsenal, won the league here and a few more pots here and there, and won the Turkish Cup with Beşiktaş so far. Hardly a career to be sniffed at.

August 14th

1990- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwsedsxCoYQ Liverpools goals are here from Dalglish's testimonial, he had a hand in all three goals and glorified friendly or not you can see he was still brilliant even though he was 39 and hadnt played much in about two years.

The Sociedad team contained former Liverpool striker John Aldridge, as well as Dalian Atkinson and Kevin Richardson, all three would be back in England within a year, during which time Sociedad would eventually be managed by former Liverpool man John Toshack, not sure why all three left, maybe none of them settled.

1993- We looked good on the opening day vs Sheffield Wednesday, a very well balanced team although looking through the 11 a number of the team were getting on a bit, Nigel Clough looked unreal scoring twice on his debut but unfortunately he never really made the impact expected.

2019- Me, the mrs and the kid flew to Menorca that morning, sadly the early start caught up on me, my last full day at home I was flat out until about 11pm, unfortunately I was up at 2am for the early flight from Belfast, with an 18 month year old it wasnt easy, punched, kicked and screamed at all through the airport, I cant sleep on planes and we landed I headed straight for the bar.

We headed out for the game that night, what I should have done is go  for a sleep during the day but I didnt. An hour into the super cup final the tiredness of sleeping about 3 hours over the previous 40 hours or so caught up. I was struggling to stay awake and couldnt drink any more, deciding it wasnt fair on the family I retired to bed. Phone off, final or not I will find out tomorrow what the result was.

Given the match ended up in extra time and penalties I could only imagine the state I would have been in had I hung on

My guess is Id have gone viral for falling asleep, falling out of a chair, puking or maybe all 3. It was a shame to be in bed and missing a trophy lift but I cant say I regret it much

Thank You For The Link and the story Sorry you had to miss the trophy lift

August 13th

1966- There is a famous photo of both players showing the world cup around to everyone.

1997- I didnt equate John Barnes leaving and the defeat  to Leicester being the same day, I know that day my Dad went into hospital for a angioblast, a few months earlier he was lifting stuff in work and start getting pains in his chest. He got checked out and it turned out one of his main arteries was completely blocked. Since he had retired from football 25 years earlier he wasnt training much at all, his diet was poor and he had put on a lot of weight. He took the summer off work and they were to bring him in for the op on this day where they would shove a tube up his groin and blow out the blockage. He never went back to work but thankfully still with us.

I remember the news of Barnes leaving being on the news in the hospital and he was wearing something ridiculous. I didnt recall much about the Leicester game other than being very disappointed at the result.

2011- Skipping a few games but I missed that game in London, ranted about it once here and cant be bothered again although for the game itself we stormed out of the blocks. Downing hit the bar with a great run early on, Carroll had a goal disallowed, Suarez scored and missed a penalty but from an hour on it was like the team suddenly got tired and seb Larsson scored for them with a nice scissor kick. There was one moment where Suarez chased a ball down the wing and easily got beaten to it, it was like he was running in porridge, he was hooked almost immediately. That week there were many questions about how tired the team looked, Dalglish was asked about the players fitness and with typical gruff he just went something like
"why dont you go out for a run with them and see how you get on?"

2023- I was just back from a boss holiday with a chunk of the family, one of whom is captain of a ferry. So a few of the family took advantage of an offer to go to Scotland for the day, I cant remember what the price was but with mates rates it was for nothing. I decided not to go, just back from holiday I decided I would clean the whole gaff and do the washing and ironing from holiday as well as build our new hall table and shoe rack.

In the end the family who stayed home met up for this game with Chelsea, Diaz scored a cracker but it only ended 1-1, although we were robbed of a penalty late on.

My decision to stay at home was further vindicated as my familys ferry back from Scotland was delayed something like 6 hours. Thankfully given our relationship with the captain he gave up his cabin for my kid to have a nice kip and managed to wangle a few free drinks and sandwiches for the family.

They were home that late I was long in bed and didnt hear them come in (few beers and a bottle of wine saw to that)

Cheers for that

A long read but enjoyable

Trent Alexander Arnold ( 2017 )

1905 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid was born in Motherwell. He signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926 and bagged an impressive thirty goals in 55 games before moving to Manchester United in February 1929.

1964 - We played in our first FA Charity Shield, only drawing 2-2 with West Ham United at Anfield. Gordon Wallace and Gerry Byrne twice gave us the lead, with John Byrne and Geoff Hurst both netting equalisers, with the latter being one of his nine strikes against the reds. The trophy was shared between the two clubs, as this was in the days before extra-time and penalty shoot-outs. Phil Chisnall made his reds bow in this game when he became the first ever substitute in senior English football, replacing Alf Arrowsmith after just a quarter of an hour, who had suffered a serious knee injury.

1970 - We won 2-1 at Burnley, with Alun Evans and Emlyn Hughes on target.

1972 - We beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to strikes from John Toshack and Steve Heighway.

1974- Centre-half Larry Lloyd was sold to Coventry City for £240,000. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime, and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining the reds from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times.

1976 – Kevin Keegan confirmed that the upcoming season would be his final one at Anfield. He struck twenty times in 57 outings in this campaign, helping us to claim the European Cup and League title, and reach the FA Cup Final.

1976 - Bolo Zenden was born in Maastricht in the Netherlands. He signed on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He notched twice in 47 senior reds games, as injury hampered his career at Anfield. He helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, as well as reach the Champions League Final in his brief time with the reds. Bolo left the club in July 2007 to join Olympique de Marseille.

1981 – Ray Clemence was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000. He had arrived from Sc*nthorpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields in his fourteen years at Anfield.

1982 - We lost the Final of the Málaga Tournament to the home side. We drew 1-1 after extra time, with our goal coming from Alan Kennedy, but lost the penalty shoot-out 4-2. The game started so late that the action did not come to an end until around 1:15am. Terry McDermott and Phil Neal converted their spot-kicks, with David Hodgson’s being saved and Howard Gayle sending his over the crossbar

1983 – Winger Brian Mooney signed from Home Farm for £20,000. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, moving on to Preston North End in November 1987.

1987 - John Barnes and new record signing Peter Beardsley both made their official reds debuts as we beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, thanks to goals from John Aldridge and Steve Nicol, who scored an extraordinary header from the edge of the penalty box. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Ronnie Whelan played his 200th League game for the reds that day.

1988 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was born in Beni-Boughafar. He signed from Dutch side SC Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012, failing to score in twelve appearances before spending a season and a half on loan at Stoke City. He was sold to UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Ahli for a reported £4.7m in January 2015.

1991 - Gary Gillespie was sold to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000. He had been Joe Fagan’s first signing, helping us to three League titles in his eight injury-ravaged years at Anfield, scoring sixteen times in 214 appearances.

1991 – David Speedie left the reds to join Blackburn Rovers. He had struck six times in fourteen outings since signing from Coventry City for £675,000 seven months earlier.

1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting eighteen times in 146 appearances before being released earlier this summer. He made it back from serious injury to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and helping us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

1994 - We beat Dundalk 2-1 in a friendly at Oriel Park, with Robbie Fowler and Michael Thomas on the scoresheet.

1996 Six weeks from the conclusion of the 1996 European Championships in England, where the Czech Republic were runners-up to Germany, Roy Evans signed Berger who was selected Player of the Month at the very beginning of his Liverpool career! The new darling of the Kop suffered with injuries but on his day he was a frightening prospect for any keeper as his left foot was a rocket launcher.

1996 - Patrik Berger signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £3.25m, following an impressive Euro ’96. He scored 35 times in 196 reds games, before joining Portsmouth in June 2003.

2002 - Young full-back Stephen Wright joined Sunderland for £3m, after just 21 reds games. He netted twice in 105 games for them, with injuries blighting his time there, and was released in May 2008.

2005 - Liverpool confirmed the signings of young centre-backs Godwin Antwi from Real Zaragoza and Miki Roqué from U.E. Lleida. Both featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup winning campaign in 2006, but only made one senior appearance between them, when Roque made a late cameo at Galatasaray in December 2006.

2007 - Yossi Benayoun made his reds debut as Andriy Voronin’s first reds strike proved to be the only goal of the first leg of our Champions League qualifier in Toulouse, who became our hundredth different opponents in European competition.

2010 – Joe Cole was sent off for a challenge on Laurent Koscielny just before half-time in our Anfield meeting with Arsenal. David N’Gog put us in front immediately after the break, with the lead lasting until the last minute when Marouane Chamakh diverted a cross against the post and Pepe Reina spilled the rebound into his own net. Koscielny was then sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. This turned out to be Javier Mascherano’s 139th and final reds game.

2017 – Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first senior goal as we won 2-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League qualifier. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty, with forward Dominic Solanke making his reds bow as we benefited when Havard Nordtveit inadvertently diverted a James Milner cross into his own net.

2020 - Jürgen Klopp was named Premier League Manager of the Season for 2019-20, having led us as we romped to the Premier League title.

2021 – Former Director Terry Smith died at Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead. He was on the board from 1992 until 2007.

2022 - Darwin Núñez was dismissed in our 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. Wilfred Zaha put the Eagles in front before the break, but the Uruguayan was sent off for headbutting Joachim Andersen. Luis Díaz bagged the equaliser,

The 2019 Super Cup win is one of my favourites watching us as I watched it in the pub round the corner from my flat in Manchester with a bunch of my mates who have now all sadly moved on. I was fucking legless by pens because the game went on so long and I tend to be a nervous drinker :D - as I'm disabled anyway I was wobbly as fuck by the time we left, but very, very happy. Still watch the shootout occasionally to this day and will never say a bad word about Adrian.

The season that followed was quite unbelieveable.  Then COVID hit and my life hasn't really been the same since.
I don't agree, he'd go to Legoland. Bye.

Passed Away On This Day

Tommy McLeod ( 1999 )

1893 – Forward Albert Worgan signed for the reds. He struck twice in two senior outings before moving on in 1895.

1909 - Stalwart centre-half Alex Raisbeck was sold to Partick Thistle for £500. He netted nineteen times in 341 games in eleven years, becoming our first skipper to lift the League title in 1901. He went on to win a further League title five years later, as well as a Second Division championship. He returned to Anfield in 1939 as a scout, staying in that role until his death ten years later.

1924 - Legendary full-back Ephraim Longworth scored one of his four only recorded goals in a public practice game for Stripes vs. Reds. He signed in June 1910 from Leyton Orient, playing 370 times between then and 1928, and becoming the first red to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff.

1939 – Left-half John Browning moved on to Southern League side Gillingham. He had signed from Dunoon Athletic in March 1934, making just nineteen appearances.

1961 – Centre-half John Nicholson was sold to Port Vale, having only made one senior reds appearance since turning pro in January 1957. He played over 200 games for the Valiants.

1962 – Right-back John Molyneux was sold back to Chester, having signed from there for £5,500 in June 1955. He bagged three goals in 249 games but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out.

1964 - Barry Venison was born in Consett. He signed from Sunderland for £200,000 in July 1986 and made 158 appearances for the reds, scoring three times and helping us to claim two League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Newcastle United for £250,000 in July 1992.

1969 - We won in the top-flight, with Emlyn Hughes and Chris Lawler on target in our 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur.

1975 - Joey Jones made his reds debut as we went down 2-0 in our season opener at Queens Park Rangers, who ended the season in second place, just one point behind the mighty reds. Gerry Francis scored a goal at the end of a slick passing move that was later named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, with substitute Mick Leach adding the second.

1980 - Both Alan and Ray Kennedy scored in our 3-0 defeat of Crystal Palace at Anfield after Kenny Dalglish had opened the scoring.

1986 - Three months after beating the Toffees at Wembley to complete our first ever League and Cup double, the two sides met again there for the FA Charity Shield. Ian Rush equalised in our 1-1 draw after Adrian Heath had scored with just ten minutes remaining, with the trophy being shared by the two clubs. Bruce Grobbelaar was replaced by substitute Mike Hooper just before the hour mark, who was making his debut, so ending Bruce’s run of 310 consecutive reds games. New signing Barry Venison also made his first-class reds bow in this match, on his 22nd birthday, while Craig Johnston played his 200th game for the club.

1992 - David James made his debut in our 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, our first game in the newly-formed Premiership. This was also the first Premiership game to be screened live on Sky with Teddy Sheringham netting one of his seven goals against us.

1998 - The first official reds game under the joint command of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier took place. We won 2-1 at Southampton, thanks to goals from Karlheinz Riedle and Michael Owen. Their first signing as joint bosses, Norwegian right-back Vegard Heggem, made his debut in this game. Egil Ostenstad had opened the scoring for the home side.

1999 – Scottish left-winger Tommy McLeod died. He joined the reds from the Army in October 1945, but only made seven senior appearances before joining Chesterfield in June 1951.

2001 - Reds trio Sami Hyypiä, Gary McAllister and Michael Owen were all honoured by legendary French sports paper L’Équipe for the role they played in the club’s unprecedented treble success, being named in their star-studded team of the season.

2006 - A Liverpool XI won 2-1 at Lincoln City, a game arranged as part of the Jack Hobbs transfer a year earlier. Mark González and Besian Idrizaj scored for the reds.

2007 - Commercial Director Ian Ayre started work in his new job for the club. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having once been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said on being appointed that, “being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. He was promoted to Managing Director in May 2014, leaving the club in February 2017 to take charge of TSV 1860 München.

2008 – Fernando Torres struck the only goal of the game late on as we won at Sunderland in our opening League game of the season.

2009 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala and right-back Glen Johnson both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in our season opener. Ayala came off the bench when Martin Škrtel had to go off following a clash of heads with Jamie Carragher. Steven Gerrard bagged our goal from the spot.

2014 – Left-back Alberto Moreno signed from his hometown club Sevilla for £12m. He struck three times in 141 outings before being released in June 2019.

2021 – Centre-half Ben Davies joined Sheffield United on loan, netting once in 23 outings for the Blades. On the same day, midfielder Leighton Clarkson moved to Blackburn Rovers for the season, with whom he only played twice before returning to Anfield in January 2022.

Phil Chisnall ( 1964 )
Stig Inge Bjornebye ( 1996 )
Chfistian Benteke ( 2015 )

1964 - We made our first appearance in European competition in the preliminary round of the European Cup. We won 5-0 at Icelandic champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur, with Gordon Wallace and Roger Hunt both netting braces and Phil Chisnall grabbing his first reds goal. This remained our record equal away win in Europe until October 2017. The return leg was just as straightforward, as we ran out 11-1 winners on aggregate.

1968 - We drew 1-1 at Arsenal, with Roger Hunt netting our goal and John Radford on target for the Gunners with one of his seven strikes past us.

1970 - We held Blackpool to a goalless draw at Bloomfield Road.

1970 - Øyvind Leonhardsen was born in Kristiansund in Norway. He signed from Wimbledon in June 1997 for £3.5m, scoring seven times in 49 reds appearances before Gérard Houllier off-loaded him to Tottenham Hotspur for £3m in August 1999.

1971 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 at Anfield, when John Toshack and Steve Heighway added to a Tommy Smith penalty. Derek Dougan netted the last of his four goals against the reds with Kenny Hibbitt also scoring for the visitors.

1973 - We held Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht to a goalless draw at their Stade Émile Versé.

1974 - Bob took charge of his first League game, a 2-1 win at Luton Town, with the goals coming from Tommy Smith and Steve Heighway.

1978 – Tommy Smith lefts the reds to join Swansea City. The ‘Anfield Iron’ had helped us to win four League titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time with Liverpool, netting 48 times in 638 games since turning pro in April 1962.

1980 - Former right-back Jan Kromkamp was born in Makkinga in the Netherlands. He made just eighteen reds appearances following his January 2006 swap arrival from Villarreal, leaving after less than eight months at Anfield with an FA Cup winners’ medal.

1981 - Jimmy Case joined Brighton & Hove Albion for £350,000 after seven years at Anfield during which time he bagged 46 goals in 269 reds games, helping us to claim three European Cups, four League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields. He had four seasons in this first spell at the Goldstone Ground, netting fifteen goals in 151 games, helping to knock the reds out of the FA Cup at Anfield in February 1983. On the very same day, Mark Lawrenson made his reds bow in our 2-1 friendly defeat at Club Atlético de Madrid, with Ray Kennedy bagging our goal.

1985 - King Kenny’s first reds game as boss brought a 2-0 defeat of Arsenal at Anfield, thanks to goals from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol.

1991 - Mark Walters, Mark Wright and new record signing Dean Saunders all made their official reds debuts as we saw off Oldham Athletic 2-1 at Anfield in our opening fixture of the season. Ray Houghton and John Barnes scored our goals after Earl Barrett had opened the scoring early on.

1996 - Our opening game of the season ended in a 3-3 draw at Middlesbrough, with their new signing Fabrizio Ravanelli nabbing a hat-trick. Stig Inge Bjørnebye struck the first of his four reds goals, with John Barnes and Robbie Fowler also on target for the reds. Future red Stewart Downing was one of the ball-boys that day.

2001 - It was announced that Stéphane Henchoz had signed a new contract that would tie him to the reds until 2005. He made a total of 205 reds appearances, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 and another League Cup two years later, moving on to Celtic in January 2005.

2003 - Steve Finnan and Harry Kewell both made their official reds bows as we lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea. Michael Owen scored a twice-taken penalty, our 300th League goal since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Future red Glen Johnson played his first League game for the visitors, with Juan Sebastián Verón on target and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagging the last of his seven goals against the reds.

2004 - Spanish right-sided midfielder Antonio Núñez signed from Real Madrid as part of the deal that took Michael Owen to Spain, being valued at £1.5m. He is the only player to score his solitary reds goal in a major cup final, netting a consolation in the Carling Cup defeat by Chelsea in February 2005, one of his 27 reds appearances. He moved on to Real Club Celta de Vigo in July 2005.

2006 - Darren Potter joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan, having not fully convinced in his seventeen senior reds outings. He made the move permanent the following January, after one goal in 24 outings for Wolves.

2012 - Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi signed from Dutch side SC Heerenveen for £2.4m, failing to score in twelve appearances before spending a season and a half on loan at Stoke City. He was sold to UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Ahli for a reported £4.7m in January 2015.

2013 – New keeper Simon Mignolet kept a clean sheet by saving a late penalty and its follow-up on his reds bow as Daniel Sturridge’s goal was enough to secure victory over Stoke City at Anfield. Forward Iago Aspas and centre-half Kolo Touré both also debuted in this game. As the game was an early kick off on opening day, the reds finished the match at the top of the table!

2014 – Forward Rickie Lambert and centre-half Dejan Lovren both made their reds bows against former club Southampton as we won 2-1 at Anfield, with right-back Javier Manquillo also debuting. Future red Nathaniel Clyne equalised after Raheem Sterling had opened the scoring, with Daniel Sturridge bagging the winner.

2015 – Keeper Brad Jones signed for Bradford City on a one-year deal having been released by the reds, but only played three times for the Bantams before being released just two months later.

2015 – Centre-forward Christian Benteke scored his first reds goal to see off Bournemouth 1-0 at Anfield, despite Philippe Coutinho being in an offside position and seemingly interfering with play. James Milner took over the captain’s armband for the first time after Jordan Henderson was substituted.

2018 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan was sold to Cagliari for £2m after two goals in 53 games since signing from Augsburg for £4.2m.

2019 – We won 2-1 at Southampton with ex-Saint Sadio Mané scoring on the stroke of half time. Roberto Firmino doubled our lead before an Adrián howler handed ex-red Danny Ings the chance to bag a consolation. This result took us to the top of the table after two fixtures, a position we did not relinquish for the rest of the campaign.

2020 – Young Welsh right-back Neco Williams signed a new contract, having made eleven senior appearances in his first season with the first team as we claimed the League title. On the same day, Sadio Mané won the Premier League PFA Fans' Player of the Year award for 2019-20, having struck eleven times in 35 appearances as we won the League.

Also On August 17th

On This Day 60 Years Ago

60 years since Reds made European bow
it is  60 years since the club's European debut in Iceland on August 17, 1964.
Our foreign adventures all began under Bill Shankly in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik.
Our opponents were the Icelandic champions KR Reykjavík and the competition was the European Cup; in a precursor for later dominance in the tournament, the travellers won 5-0.Roger Hunt notably netted twice, spearheading a line-up that included the likes of Ian Callaghan, Tommy Lawrence, Ronnie Moran and captain Ron Yeats.
Ian Callaghan recalled how their preparation for a journey into Europe was far different to that enjoyed by the current squad.
"I remember thinking to myself when we drawn to play Reykjavik: 'I didn't even know they played football in Iceland!'
"In those days we didn't charter a flight so we had to fly via Glasgow. We had a five-hour wait in Glasgow before our flight to Iceland, so Shanks decided to take us to Butlins to pass the time away.
"When we arrived at Butlins, Shanks went to the front of the bus and there was an old man in a hut at the entrance to the park. Shanks said: 'I've brought Liverpool FC, we are travelling to Iceland.' The man said: 'I think you've took a wrong turning!'
"It was all new to us and it was exciting playing in Europe. I have never been to Iceland since to tell you the truth; Reykjavik were part-time and we beat them quite comfortably in the end."
PS
Amazingly This Game was played on a Monday Night JUST TWO DAYS after drawing with West Ham 2-2 in the Charity Shield at Anfield on Saturday 15th August .

Steve Parr ( 1951 )
Tommy Younger ( 1956 )
Paul Walsh ( 1984 )
Joe Allen ( 2012 )

1931 - Centre-half D ick White was born. He signed from his hometown club Sc*nthorpe United in November 1955 and was reds captain until the arrival of Ron Yeats, making 217 appearances, and won a Second Division title medal in his time at Anfield, scoring just once. He moved on to Doncaster Rovers in May 1962.

1935 - Scottish inside-forward Jimmy Harrower, was born in Alva. He signed from Hibernian for £11,000 in January 1958 and bagged 22 goals in 105 reds games, moving on to Newcastle United in March 1961. On the same day, Northern Irish forward Sam English was born in Coleraine. He signed from Rangers for £8,000 in August 1933, netting 26 times in fifty games before joining Queen Of The South in July 1935.

1951 - We lost 2-0 to Portsmouth at Anfield, with full-back Steve Parr making his reds bow, their most recent win in L4.

1956 - Keeper Tommy Younger made his reds debut but could not prevent us losing 3-2 to Huddersfield Town at Anfield. Billy Liddell nabbed both our goals, with one coming from the spot. Future red Dave Hickson was amongst the scorers for the Terriers, with Ron Simpson and Willie Davie also on target.

1962 - Winger Kevin Lewis netted as Blackpool left Anfield having won 2-1 in another season opener, with a seventeen-year old Alan Ball debuting for the visitors. Ray Charnley struck the first of his eight goals against the reds, with Des Horne also on target.

1965 - Former reserves striker John Durnin was born in Bootle. He failed to make the break-through at Anfield, making only two League Cup appearances and one in the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy before his departure to Oxford United for £225,000 in February 1989. His most recent appearance at Anfield came as he scored the only goal of the Replay 86 game in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal in May 2006.

1979 - We beat a Football League Of Ireland side 2-0 at Dalymount Park, thanks to strikes from Alan Hansen and Terry McDermott. This game was arranged as construction work at Molineux meant that our opening League fixture scheduled for this day had to be postponed.

1984 - Bruce Grobbelaar scored an own goal to hand the trophy to our neighbours from across Stanley Park, with new signing Paul Walsh making his reds debut.

1986 - We beat an Irish International XI 2-1 in Cork, with Jan Mølby netting a penalty and Kevin MacDonald also on the scoresheet. Future red Ray Houghton scored for the Irish. The game was originally supposed to have taken place in 1985 as part of Cork’s 800th birthday celebrations but had to be re-arranged following the post-Heysel ban on where the reds could play in Europe.

1988 - Ian Rush re-signed for the reds from Juventus for a club record £2.8m, having only spent one season with the Turin giants. In his second spell at Anfield, he struck 139 times in 329 games, winning a further League title, two FA Cups, League Cup and FA Charity Shield this time around.

1988 - Centre-half Jack Hobbs was born in Portsmouth, signing officially with the reds in a £750,000 deal from Lincoln City on his seventeenth birthday. He featured in the first team on five occasions but was sold to Leicester City in April 2009 having helped them to claim the League One title while on loan.

1990 - John Barnes equalised from the spot in our 1-1 draw with Manchester United, with the trophy therefore being shared. Clayton Blackmore had netted for United on the stroke of half time.

1993 - We won 3-1 at Queens Park Rangers, with Steve Nicol, Nigel Clough and Ian Rush all on target. Ray Wilkins bagged the home side’s consolation.

2000 - Dominic Matteo was sold to Leeds United for £4m. He had scored twice in 155 appearances for the reds and quit Elland Road in July 2004 to rejoin Graeme Souness at Blackburn Rovers.

2001 - Pegguy Arphexad and John Arne Riise both made their League debuts in our 2-1 defeat of West Ham United at Anfield, which came thanks to a Michael Owen brace. Robbie Fowler sat out the game in the Main Stand, following a training-ground bust-up with Assistant Manager Phil Thompson. Markus Babbel had to be withdrawn at half-time, as he was beginning to suffer the effects of Guillain-Barré syndrome, unbeknownst to us all. Paolo di Canio netted for the Hammers between Owen’s strikes.

2002 - Riise netted the only goal of the game as we kicked off our Premiership campaign at Aston Villa, with Peter Enckleman then saving a Michael Owen penalty.

2006 - Dirk Kuyt signed from Feyenoord for £9m, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He proved a willing worker, notching 71 times in 285 outings, including our consolation in the Champions League Final in Athens in 2007 and five derby strikes. He helped the club to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his final season before moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for €1m in June 2012.

2009 – Reserves centre-half Mikel San José re-joined Athletic de Bilbao on loan, signing on again permanently the following May after three goals in thirty outings that season.

2010 – Keeper Brad Jones signed from Middlesbrough for £2.3m. He only played 27 senior reds games before being released in June 2015, although one of these was our victorious FA Cup Semi-final derby at Wembley in April 2012.

2010 – Slovakian centre-half Martin Škrtel signed a new contract to tie him to the reds until 2014, although he later extended this. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. On the same day, new signing Joe Cole was found guilty of speeding.

2011 - Djimi Traoré joined Olympique de Marseille, playing twenty times in his one season there. On the same day, forward Nabil El Zhar was released by the reds after scoring just once in 32 first-team outings.

2012 – Joe Allen made his reds bow as we lost 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion in our opening League game of the season. We fell behind to a Zoltán Gera wonder-goal just before half time, with Pepe Reina saving a Shane Long spot-kick on the hour mark with Daniel Agger dismissed for a foul on Long. However, the Baggies were awarded a second penalty when Martin Škrtel was also judged to have brought down Long in the box, which Peter Odemwingie converted. Future Blue Romelu Lukaku completed the scoring with the first of his five past us to date.

2014 – Portuguese centre-half Tiago Ilori joined Girondins de Bordeaux on loan, netting once in fifteen games for the French side.

2016 – Ex-red John Arne Riise came out of retirement to sign for Indian Super League side Chennaiyin, scoring once in ten appearances.

2019 – Mario Balotelli signed for his hometown club Brescia, going on to score five times in nineteen outings that season.

2020 – Left-back Adam Lewis joined Amiens SC on loan, playing nine times before joining Plymouth Argyle on a temporary basis the following January.

2023 – Japanese midfielder Wataru Endō signed from VfB Stuttgart for a reported €19m. He bagged two goals in 43 games in his first season with the reds, already helping us to claim the League Cup. On the same day, keeper Luke Hewitson joined Stalybridge Celtic on loan.

I was at that West Ham game in 2001. Owen was at his absolute peak there in terms of form and confidence. Single-handedly dragged us to victory. I do remember the Fowler argument causing a bit of a stir. Sadly his days were numbered, sold in about the December?

Roundabout then yeah. I was gutted as he was my hero.  Seems odd to think though that he would never be quite as good again. I *think* he got back in for the Haka game 3 days after as I went to that (first time in the Kop) and remember him getting a hero's welcome.

I don't agree, he'd go to Legoland. Bye.

Passed Away On This Day

John Bamber ( 1971 )

1894 – Inside-right Jimmy Ross signed from Preston North End for a club record £75. He had won the League twice with their ‘invincibles’ side, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games as well as becoming club captain. He left for Burnley in March 1897, sadly dying in June 1902 aged just 36.

1901 – Forward Tosh Johnson was born in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire. He crossed the park in March 1934, having claimed the First and Second Division titles and FA Cup with the Blues, and netted eight times in 38 reds games before joining Darwen in August 1936.

1939 - We beat Everton 2-1 in a friendly, with Harold Taylor and Jack Balmer on the scoresheet. The game was played in aid of the Jubilee Fund.

1944 - Cyril Done scored four goals as we thumped Everton 5-2 in a friendly, with Malam also on target.

1950 - We started our top-flight campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, going on to end the season in ninth place. Roy Swinbourne netted one of his five goals past us, with Billy Crook also scoring.

1953 - We beat Portsmouth 3-1 at Anfield in another season opener, with Bill Jones netting twice and Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, this was our only win in the first nine games of the season and we were relegated at the end of that season, having finished rock bottom of the table.

1961 - Ian St. John and Ron Yeats both debuted as we kicked off our Second Division championship winning season with a 2-0 win at Bristol Rovers, thanks to a strike from winger Kevin Lewis and a John Hills own goal.

1967 - New record signing Tony Hateley made his official debut as we started another season with a goalless draw at Manchester City. Tony Book missed a penalty for the home side.

1972 - Ex-reds left-back Peter Wall broke his leg while playing for Crystal Palace as they held us to a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park. Emlyn Hughes grabbed our equaliser while Ray Clemence played his hundredth League game for the reds.

1975 – West Ham United held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield, with Ian Callaghan and John Toshack netting.

1978 - Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring before Queens Park Rangers’ Paul McGee scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, although we still won the game 2-1, with Steve Heighway netting late on. Left-back Alan Kennedy made his reds bow while Emlyn Hughes and Ray Clemence had paraded the European Cup prior to kick off, with Bob Paisley being presented with his Manager of the Month award for the previous April.

1980 – Keeper Steve Ogrizovic played his fifth and last reds game in our goalless draw at Coventry City. He later made a club record 601 appearances for the Sky Blues.

1983 - Centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for the reds as a professional. He only made two senior appearances before joining Manchester City in September 1987.

1987 - The reds beat an Irish Olympic XI 5-0 at Lansdowne Road in Dublin, with our goals coming from a Paul Walsh brace, Peter Beardsley, Ronnie Whelan and a John Aldridge penalty. Nigel Spackman played at right-back.

1989 – We hosted City when a John Barnes penalty put us ahead before a deflected Andy Hinchcliffe free-kick levelled the scores. Second-half goals from Peter Beardsley and Steve Nicol handed us a 3-1 victory.

1992 - We recorded our first win in the newly-renamed FA Premier League by beating Sheffield United 2-1 at Anfield, with goals from Mark Walters and Paul Stewart’s first reds strike after Brian Deane had given the visitors the lead with one of his eight goals against us. This was also Ged Poynton’s first match in charge of the stadium and operations.

1995 - Stan Collymore scored the only goal of the game on his official reds debut against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, our first fixture of the season.

1996 - David Thompson made his reds bow from the bench in our 2-0 home defeat of Arsenal, with Steve McManaman netting a brace.

2000 - Gary McAllister became our oldest post-war debutant, aged 35 years and 237 days, in our season opener against Bradford City. Markus Babbel and Nick Barmby also made their first-class reds bows, as Emile Heskey scored the only goal of the game, his first at Anfield.

2001 – Northern Irish keeper Liam Hughes was born in Craigavon. He joined the reds from Celtic in January 2021, making it to the first-team bench on two occasions before being released at the end of the 2022/23 season.

2001 - Robbie Fowler finally apologised after his training ground bust-up with Phil Thompson, having sat out the FA Charity Shield and the home League win over West Ham United.

2004 - El-Hadji Diouf joined Bolton Wanderers on loan after six goals in eighty reds games following his £10m signing from Racing Club de Lens in June 2002. He bagged nine goals in 32 games while on loan at the Reebok Stadium, before signing permanently for the Trotters in June 2005.

2006 - Jan Kromkamp played his eighteenth and final reds game as a Robbie Fowler penalty rescued a point at Sheffield United in our opening League match of the season. This brought our fourteen-game winning streak to an end. Jamie Carragher and John Arne Riise both had to go off injured at Bramall Lane.

2007 - Fernando Torres bagged his first reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea, thanks to a Frank Lampard penalty that was ludicrously awarded by referee Rob Styles against Steve Finnan, one of his eight strikes past us. Peter Crouch was playing his hundredth game for the club.

2009 – Right-back Glen Johnson struck for the first time as we thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield. Jamie Carragher played his 400th League game as we became the first club to reach 5,000 points in the top flight. Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and David N’Gog all also netted.

2010 – Christian Poulsen had a goal disallowed on his debut as we faced Turkish side Trabzonspor in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Play-off at Anfield. Joe Cole had a penalty saved in the second half, while Jamie Carragher skippered the side for the fiftieth time as Ryan Babel bagged the only goal of the game in first-half injury time.

2017 – Left-back Andy Robertson debuted as Sadio Mané bagged the only goal of Crystal Palace’s League visit to Anfield.

2022 – Academy Director Alex Inglethorpe signed a new contract. He had been heading the Academy up since 2014, having been promoted from Reserve Team Head Coach.

2023 – Japanese midfielder Wataru Endō made his reds bow as we beat Bournemouth 3-1 at Anfield, despite Alexis Mac Allister being sent off, although his dismissal was later rescinded. Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring for the Cherries after just three minutes but Luis Díaz struck before Mohamed Salah put us in front by converting his own saved penalty before the break. Diogo Jota also netted, after we had gone down to ten men.

August 18 2001

I remember the issue with Fowler, he said in his book it kicked off in training as Thommo was behind the net of a goal fiddling with something and Fowler lashed the ball in the net. Thommo went nuts saying Fowler could have injured him, Fowler refused to say sorry, saying Thommo was being a baby. It all kicked off from there, he said in a meeting with Thommo and Houllier, Thommo claimed he could have been injured. Fowler said jokingly something along the lines of him planting a scissors in the ball and it would cut through the net. Fowler claimed Thommo was going mad at that, and that Houllier was trying his best not to laugh.

Fowler also said at one point he was brought to the half way line in training for a chat with Thommo and that in the middle of it he claimed Thommo was randomly waving his hands all over the place for no reason which he thought was odd. next day Liverpool echo had a big story of the argument showing Thommo waving his hands at Fowler. The pic made it look like the conversation was far worse than it was and was clearly a set up. Fowler missed a few games until he said sorry but it always felt like the management and Fowler at this point were like oil and water.

The 2-1 over West Ham was a good day, two superb goals by Michael Owen, enjoyable, a good mate of mine phoned then for a night out, totally unplanned and they are the best ones. We had good craic though one of his mates had a total meltdown for some reason.

At the end of the night the bouncers had to throw him out, I remember arguing with them outside over it over god knows what, the guy in question just lost it and start punching walls away from everyone. No idea why, he really badly injured his hands over this.

On the long bus home a few women took a shine to me over my Dublin accent, managed to get off with one of them which was a bloody rarity for me them days I can say to the point where my mates on the bus just sat gobsmacked. Good time all round (apart from the loo la punching walls)

Spent the sunday enjoying myself and then celebrating because the undertaker and kane won the tag titles at Summerslam haha

Today

in 1992. This was our first ever premier league win, we beat Sheffield United 2-1

Premier league records for us

First Assist: Ronnie Whelan
First goal:Mark Walters
First Winner: Paul Stewart

his one and only league goal for us.

It was also the official opening of the centenary stand in our centenary year, 25 years later the stand would be renamed after Kenny Dalglish.

Unusually David James in goal wore a blue jersey, I think this was the only time the jersey was ever worn.

Here is a pic of it and very little footage exists of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3YjKEim23I Lovely goal by Stewart

Strangely the Liverpool keepers wore 4 different jersies in the first 4 games

Grobbelaar wore a green one in the charity shield against Leeds

James wore a yellow one against Forest, a blue one here and in the next game against Arsenal he wore a grey one
yer ma should have called you Paolo Zico Gerry Socrates HELLRAZOR

1894 – Outside-left John Drummond joined from Sheffield United, scoring once in eighteen outings before moving on to Barnsley St. Peter’s the following year.

1895 – Inside-left D ick Forshaw was born in Preston. He joined the reds in July 1919, winning two League titles while with the reds, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to one in 1928 after he had crossed Stanley Park for £3,750 in March 1927.

1888 – Forward Harry Welfare was born in Wavertree, Liverpool. He signed from Northern Nomads in 1912, notching once in four outings before moving to Wrexham the following year. He later had a very successful career in Brazil, helping Fluminense to claim the title three times in succession while bagging 163 goals in just 166 games.

1913 – Inside-right John Tosswill was sold to Southend United. He had struck once in eleven outings since signing from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912.

1938 - We lost a friendly 2-1 at Everton. Jack Balmer netted in a game staged to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Football League.

1949 - We entertained Sunderland , winning 4-2 in a season opener, with Bob Paisley, Jack Balmer, Kevin Baron and Albert Stubbins all on target, with Billy Liddell missing a penalty. Dickie Davis struck one of his seven goals against us, with Ivor Broadis also on target. We went on to finish eighth that season.

1955 - We began our season with a 3-1 Second Division win at Nottingham Forest, with Alan A’Court nabbing a brace and John Evans also netting, as full-back Ray Lambert played his 300th League game for the club. Unfortunately, we ended the season in third, missing out on promotion again.

1960 - Winger and new £13,000 record signing Kevin Lewis scored on his debut as we beat Leeds United 2-0 at Anfield in another season opener, with the other goal coming from former blue Dave Hickson.

1961 - Steve McMahon was born in Liverpool. He signed from Aston Villa for £350,000 in September 1985 and struck fifty times in 277 reds appearances in his six years at Anfield, during which time he won three League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. He left the reds to sign for Manchester City for £900,000 in December 1991.

1966 - A fifteen-year old Kenny Dalglish wore the number eight shirt playing for Liverpool B as they beat Southport 1-0 in a Lancashire League match, five years before he signed professional terms with Celtic. However, he was not taken on by Bill Shankly, returning to Anfield as our record signing eleven years later.

1966 – We defeated Leicester City 3-2 in L4 in our opening League game of the season. Roger Hunt and Geoff Strong struck before Derek Dougan netted the first two of his four goals against the reds. Willie Stevenson scored the winner from the spot.

1968 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 at Anfield with Terry Conroy giving the visitors the lead with the first of his four goals past us. Ian Callaghan equalised before Tony Allen turned a Peter Thompson cross into his own net.

1969 – We won 2-0 at Manchester City with Bobby Graham bagging a brace.

1971 - An unusual situation occurred as Manchester United played a home fixture at Anfield. Old Trafford was closed for two weeks due to hooliganism, and so United entertained Arsenal at Anfield. The ‘home’ side won 3-1. Frank McLintock sent the Gunners in ahead at half time, but goals from George Best, Bobby Charlton and Brian Kidd secured United’s victory.

1974 – Ian Callaghan played his 500th League game for the reds in our goalless game at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

1977 - Kenny Dalglish scored on his League debut as we drew 1-1 at Middlesbrough, with David Armstrong bagging the first of his four goals past us.

1983 - Joe Fagan’s first game in charge came in the FA Charity Shield, when we lost 2-0 to Manchester United. Michael Robinson made his first-class reds debut in this match. Bryan Robson bagged both United’s goals, two of his seven strikes against us.

1984 - Jan Mølby scored in his first reds game, two days before he officially signed, as we beat Home Farm 3-0 in a friendly held at Tolka Park in Dublin. Ronnie Whelan added a brace, while Ian Rush sustained cartilage damage that kept him out of the first team for two months. The game had been arranged as part of the transfer deal that brought Ken DeMange and Brian Mooney to Anfield.

1988 - We gained some revenge on Wimbledon for our FA Cup Final defeat earlier that year, coming from behind to beat them 2-1 thanks to a John Aldridge brace, to claim the Shield for the seventh time outright. Charlie Boyd and Jim Magilton both sat on our bench for the first of just two occasions, while John Fashanu netted one of his six goals against us.

1994 - We thumped Palace 6-1 at Selhurst Park to get the season off to a great start. Steve McManaman and Ian Rush scored twice apiece, with Jan Mølby and Robbie Fowler also on the scoresheet. Chris Armstrong bagged the home side’s consolation.

2003 – Forward Max Woltman was born in Wirral. He joined the Academy at the age of seven, playing in the FA Youth Cup Final in May 2021 after turning pro the previous January. He signed a new contract in May 2022, making two senior appearances in cup competitions before moving on to Oxford United .

2004 - We signed a pair of Spaniards. Xabi Alonso arrived from Real Sociedad for £10.7m, with Luis García signing from Barcelona for a £6m fee. Xabi netted nineteen times, showing his silky passing skills in 210 reds games before moving to Real Madrid for £30m in August 2009. García struck thirty times, including five in our glorious Champions League campaign in 2005, in 121 games, before returning to his homeland to join Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2007.

2005 - Milan Baroš played his 108th and final reds game, with Luis García making his fiftieth reds appearance, as Xabi Alonso nabbed the only goal of our Anfield encounter with Sunderland, who had Andy Welsh sent off, the second of fifteen dismissals against the reds that season.

2011 – We beat Arsenal 2-0 in our first ever win at the Emirates Stadium. Emmanuel Frimpong was sent off before Ignasi Miquel’s clearance rebounded off Aaron Ramsey’s chest for an own goal. Luis Suárez then added a second in stoppage time.

2012 – Slovakian centre-half Martin Škrtel signed a new contract. He arrived from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m to become our most expensive defender to date, notching eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016.

2013 – Left-back Aly Cissokho signed on loan from Valencia. The Frenchman played nineteen reds games without scoring.

2016 – Marko Grujić made his senior reds bow as we dominated but lost 2-0 at Burnley, with Sam Vokes and Andre Gray both on target before the break.

2018 - Sadio Mané scored in his third consecutive reds game as we won 2-0 at Crystal Palace, with James Milner handing us the lead from the spot at the very end of the first half. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for the home side before Mané struck in injury time. Daniel Sturridge played his hundredth League game for the reds.

I was travelling yesterday so didn’t read up. I went to the opening day games against City in 1989 and Bradford in 2000.

The City one I remember coming away with a massive headache having been in the sun all day, we were about row 5 of the old Kemlyn. The same day United beat Arsenal 4-1 and that actually got a big cheer - first game of the season and we all remember how the previous one had ended.

The Bradford game was pretty tight. Moment of magic from Heskey made the difference. Was the start of a great season for us.

1977- The beginning of a love affair still going strong

Kenny Dalglish scored on his Liverpool debut in a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough, fittingly in the 7th minute.

Middlesbrough began life without one of my heroes as manager, Jack Charlton left the club saying after 4 years enough was enough but later admitted it was a hasty decision. During his time there he worked with Phil Boersma and Craig Johnston whom Charlton harshly labelled the worst player he ever saw. Johnston would later sign for Middlesbrough under charlton who didnt remember him.

Former Leeds man Terry Cooper had played with Charlton at Leeds and also at Middlesbrough were two players Charlton highly rated, scorer David Armstrong and Graeme Souness. Boro had finished 7th a few years earlier. Charlton claimed in 1991 when interviewed by bbc ahead of and Ireland England game
"We needed two or three more players and we probably could have won the league but I was a cheapskate, the money was there but i didnt spend it".

1983 Charity Shield

We lost 2-0 to Man United, many point out that Joe Fagan in his first game may have caused the team to lose focus by making a sub before a corner, a tactic in football that is still pointed out today, Phil Thompson played his last game for the club on this day, he remained until the end of the season but didnt get a look in. Thommo later said he was broken hearted when Fagan didnt even allow him on the team bus going to Rome for the European cup final in 1984, he said he was one of 17 players selected but as only 16 players were allowed in the match day squad he was the unlucky one and said he couldnt believe he didnt make the bench.

Whilst the method of him being banned from the bus was incredibly harsh, one has to wonder how after appearing in one game all season he didnt take the hint he wouldnt be on the bench

1994 vs Palace 6-1

A bit like this season we knew we needed recruitment and our only signing was a keeper, for Mamadarshvilli (who will likely sign) read Michael Stensgaard. We needed new blood and it was not a good team but a number of players like Molby, Ruddock, Redknapp, Barnes and McManaman seemed to have got into good shape over the summer. I wasnt looking forward to the season but we ended up playing very well and began this day with a crushing win and some fine goals.

2011 vs Arsenal 2-0

Think we were about 2/1 to win that, Arsenal had a number of injuries so I had about 20 on it, that away kit we wore that day was a belter, we played some good stuff, Arsenal had Frimpong sent off for a disgraceful tackle on Lucas and by full time carl Jenkinson at right back could hardly walk so they were pretty much down to 9 men. Raul Meireles and Luis Suarez came off the bench to win it for us, and I was dying for Raul to stay however he would join Chelsea a short time after. An absolute freak own goal by Aaron Ramsey and a well worked Suarez goal gave us a 2-0 win.

Can remember the mrs constantly interrupted the game til I had enough
"JESUS CHRIST LET ME WATCH THE FUCKING GAME WILL YA"

2018 Crystal palace away 2-0

That away kit looked boss under the lights. Naby Keita looked a world beater though unfortunately his legs were made of cheese.

Late on Wan Bissaka was sent off for a tackle on Salah, what annoyed me was I had salah as captain in fantasy football and wan bissaka, the red card and the amount of points I lost for a salah goal was quite big.

I enjoyed the game though in Salou having my first family holiday, a lovely night.

Just saw Luis Garcia mention this on twitter. Very cool looking back that we signed both on the same day given what they'd go on to achieve at the end of their first season. Also crazy as I mentioned the other day on the anniversary of Rafa's first league game, that it's been twenty years. All those landmark dates hitting hard, I'm sure there'll be a lot of good stuff surrounding the 20th anniversary of Istanbul next May.
