i think its cos it really drove home how good john barnes and indeed the whole team was

its the first game at anfield that people probably went "wow" outside of our goodselves of course

No. It was definitely Oxford. We started with three away fixtures (Arsenal, Coventry and West Ham, all in August). Then it was Oxford at home in September. The home match with QPR wasn't until the middle of October.

I think QPR were top when they came to Anfield in October. But they weren't top any more after we stuffed them 4-0. We went top after that.

today is david thompson's 30th birthday. such a great talent that was never fulfilled, mainly due to injury. i remember being genuinely excited when he first broke through, proabably even more so than gerrard. my first memory was probably the 4-1 against wednesday. everyone remembers gerrard's first goal for us in that game. what people forget is that thompson score an equally good goal in that game with a left footed curler from the edge of the area.

i see aswell two years ago yossi scored a hattrick against burnley

thought the season would be a lot more successful at the point, then it turned out to be

was at a wedding when i got a text about the scores. said them to a mate of mine and the looks i got off these fucking biddies there. was as if they thought "how dare you disgrace this glorious day by talking about football, shame on you"

Dare I ask if today's players would have the stamina to run out that many goals?

I remember very clearly them showing the goals on Newsround, the kid's news programme on BBC. FKA John Craven's Newsround. They showed the goals in quick succession to the tune of Rob n' Raz's iconic hit "Got to get" - absolute class.

Went on holiday late in the summer of '89 ..me and a mate decided we needed a break and although it meant missing a home game we thought, well....its only Crystal Palace!

Correct. We played Oxford, Charlton, Derby and Portsmouth at home before we played QPR. Charlton and Derby were re-arranged games because of the collapsed sewer. The two goals against Oxford both came in the 1st half at the Kop end. I'm not sure if Barnes free kick was direct or touched to him, but I remember he curled the shot superbly round their wall.

I recall we probably had more chances against Norwich the following Saturday than in the Palace game, but the ball just wouldn't go between the sticks! Going back to the Palace game, does else anyone remember Geoff Thomas hitting a penalty way over the Annie Road crossbar (Suarez style!) just after Aldo had converted our pen to make it 6 - 0?

Thompson's best goal arguably came against us at Anfield not long after he'd signed for Coventry. He hit a magnificent shot from probably 25 to 30 yards out that gave Westerveld no chance, and virtually the entire crowd stood to applaud the goal. We still won 4 - 1 though.

13th September 1989 was a day of new beginnings. One John Aldridge, Aldo, moved on to the Spanish Club,

In 104 appearances, Aldo scored 64 times, including that penalty against Crystal City. Still around today, he's part of us.

In 2008 we were treated to the debut of Albert Riera. (Bit of a controversial figure or was that because of the times?)
How difficult would it be to run onto ANFIELD for your first game against our neighbours from down the road, Manchester United.
Another infamous NorthWest Derby.

Packing it that day. So wanted us to win but could not afford to celebrate too much. Had to catch a flight back to OZ. Got a last minute reprieve. Airline let me change flights.

The bogey OG was there. But who got it?

Liverpool 2 - 1 Manchester United 2008, at Anfield.

We finally got a win after 3 years thanks to a Babel goal. Brown scored that goal own goal thanks to a Van Der Sar gaffe, bless him, and someone scored for Man United. It was Riera's debut and I remember thinking after the game that luck was on our side after a long time and we were going to have a roller-coaster season.

I remember it all... Good Times.

Riera had an excellent debut as I recall. Many thought it was daft to throw him into a game of that intensity but he took to it like a duck to plum sauce.

yeah that went way over. he also hit the post from a free kick when it was only 1-0. might have been different then.

the norwich game beardsley somehow missed an open goal from 6 yards, glenn hysen also missed a sitter.

the united game in 2008 i was on my brothers stag in lisbon. we got up hungover just in time for the game, it kicked off about 2pm portuguese time. i stayed out drinking til 7am. tevez scored early, it looked bad for us cos torres and gerrard were injured, they started with rooney tevez and berbatov upfront but the second half we took them apart. javier mascherano was like a man possessed that game. he was like a fucking lunatic. he would have won that game on his own.

ive put his picture below, im nearly sure its from that game.

also in 2003 i think milan baros broke his foot and jamie carragher broke his leg in a 3-1 win at blackburn.

Two goal for Michael Owen and a late one from Harry Kewell to seal it. Anthony Le Tallec made his debut from the bench but the game will be more remembered for two bad injuries. Baros broke his ankle and Carragher was hospitalised by a diabolical Lucas Neill challenge. Carra being Carra kinda tried to play on with a broken leg (awaits Al to tell us about Carragher playing when injured

)

That 2008 was a great memory. I was on a stag do so this set the day up nicely with it being an early kick off. Riera did have a good debut, Brown and VDS had that horrible tangle and then everyone’s choice of Player of the Year that season Lord Ryan of Giggs got mugged by Masch for the winner. I remember in seasons gone by we’d made a lot of the running against United but then gifted them soft goals to undo our good work. Finally the boot was on the other foot.

It was also satisfying to win this one as they started with deadline day signing Berbatov, Tevez (and possibly Rooney and Ronaldo too?). We were missing both of our ‘2 man team’…in fact this was one of the games that helped put that myth to bed. Masch and Xabi were class from memory.

A lot of people on here would have been made up as Carra was dropped for about 6 months after that!!

Oh and the following season Cisse broke his leg at Blackburn in a totally innoccuous challenge. Wasn't a lucky ground for us injury wise.

We'd waited nearly 7 years for a home win against them. The previous occassion had been in November 2001 when John Arne Riise SCORED THAT GOAL! I remember Mascherano skinning Giggs to set up the winner, which wasn't Babel's cleanest strike, but nobody cared how it went in.

Even more incredibly on this day in 1999 Eric Meijer scored two goals for Liverpool FC.

i think it went 1-0 1-1 2-1 2-2 3-2. i think we had just drawn 3 matches in a row 2-2. that was almost a 4th
