And that McManaman goal.  Just superb. 

I watched it again recently and it's uncannily like Molby's v United. They both pick the ball up deep in their own half by the right touchline and both cut in towards the centre at exactly the same time. The only difference (and it's not really a surprise given their respective size and leg diameter!) is that Molby spanks his shot in, Macca caressed it slowly - and with his left peg come to think of it.

What a goal it was though, especially at that stage in the game. He scored a similar one a week or so later at home to Villa as well.

Remember that Dundalk game, went with my Dad, unusual to win by so many being so young I was getting carried away thinking how good we were and my Dad explained that Dundalk were the equivilent of a third or fourth division team so it was like beating Southport, remember thinking they must be better than Southport , they'd never get into the Fairs Cup (uefa cup).

I was.  Superb day in Glasgow and a great game to top it off.  Atmosphere in Parkhead was superb that night I think.

I went to the friendship game at Parkhead, our first game of football after Hillsborough and the way we treated that day cemented a love for the club and the fans in my young mind.  Been to up to see us in European games twice since and loved every visit.  Did one summer pre-season where we spanked them as well I seem to recall.

Was that the 4-0 game? I remember being at that, think it was the first game against United my Dad had taken me too and the noise and evident hatred was something else! Loved it! Can remember the guy next to me just going ape and shouting 'thank you God!' as we made it 3 before halftime.

Beardsley got hos hat trick in the 2nd half with a great lob and at full time Les Sealey booted the matchball out of the ground so Beardsley couldn't get it the horrible twat.

That was the game! More than a few Scousers praised the Lord that day and that hatrick.

I remember the 2006 Chelsea game, I watched it with my cousins at my gran's place.

It was a 'Super-Sunday', I don't recall that much of it except Drogba scoring after turning away from Carragher. I think Tiger Woods and Abrahamovic were at the game.
I was feeling bitter at the end of the match because I think we had deserved to win, can remember it vaguely. Also, I think United v Arsenal was the next fixture that Arsenal one.

We got our revenge in the return fixture though, 2-0 : Kuyt and that wonderful goal from Pennant.

the memory of that valencia game was houllier deciding that it would be a good idea to play salif diao at centre back. understandably it backfired but that was hardly salif's fault. they ran rings round us anyway and did the same at anfield later in the froup aswell. they were a great side.

That game against Kuusysi Lahti was our 1st agme back in Europe after we were given a one year ban extension compared to other English clubs. As the goal times suggest, it was very tight until a late 4 goal burst gave the scoreline a flattering look. We lost the away leg 1 - 0. Dean Saunders scored 5 over 2 legs in a later round against FC Tyrol from Austria, but was never prolific for us in the League before we sold him to Villa (and he scored twice against us on his debut for them!!). Our UEFA Cup run ended against Genoa when I did my 1st European away trip with LFC.

West Ham 2 - 3 Liverpool

Great memories of this particular match. I'd moved to Spain not long before and started going to a bar that showed all the English football. There were a few ex-pats in there for a bit of banter, but the main reason I'd chosen this particular bar was the replica THIS IS ANFIELD sign in the window, the Liverpool scarf draped over one of the tellys, and the photo montage on the wall of the wild fiesta that went off in the bar on a certain night in May 2005.

First time I went in for a match there was a big group of local Spanish lads in various types of replica shirt, all with one common denominator - the Liverbird on their chests. The welcome & hospitality they showed me was brilliant and the bar quickly became my local, and when kick off times didn't clash with the Liverpool match, I started going with them to watch the local side Sporting Gijon play.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, in September 2009 I was coming over for the West Ham match and when a few of the group starting saying how much they'd love to see Liverpool play away at such a classic old English ground as Upton Park (they'd all been to Anfield btw), I set about phoning a few contacts to see if there were any spares. I realise there might be some who'll frown on this, but that's life eh. I wanted to repay their hospitality, and they were really excited when I found out a couple of the regulars were giving the match a swerve. Two extra tickets were ours.

I was flying saturday to monday (the match was 5.30 on the sunday), so they booked on the same flights and off we went. The next 48 hours was a blur of sight-seeing and pubs. The weather that weekend was really warm & humid, so we were forced into regular ale stops. The highlight though was the match itself. We were a bit knackered after ending up walking miles due to engineering works on the tube. But a 3-2 away win was perfect and it was great to see them belting out FOAR with the travelling Kop. It wasn't a classic by any means, but a brace from their fellow countryman and the accompanying whole away end bounce will remain with them forever I think. Happy days.

edit: Just remembered one bit of Scouse humour that really made the Spanish lads laugh. There was obviously some banter going on with the home fans nearest the away end, when the Hammers fans singled someone out & started singing at our end "fat boy, fat boy, give us a wave"........cue about 500 of the more rotund members of the travelling Kop giving them a long wave back (guess you had to be there!)

Two games of very recent memory today.

First, the sad day.

19th September 2010, Manchester United 3 - 2 Liverpool

Berbatov 42, 59, 84 - Gerrard 64 (pen), 70

Honestly, when that Berbatov overhead kick went in, I was shocked, disbelieved and went 'wow'. I thought we were going to get hammered bad because that hit us right where it hurts. Then, luckily Evans, brought Torres down and out of nowhere, we were finally back in the game. Gerrard with ease tucked the pen and the very next minute, I think it was Vidic brings Torres down again and I could feel it. It was going to be a goal, and Gerrard squeezed it through the wall and into the net. Van Der Sar didn't even move. I jumped for joy and suddenly thought it was our change of fortune. Last few minutes and shit, Berbatov's got his hat-trick and we messed it all up. Damn, seemed we were back in it when we were dead and buried but then got hit and fell down. To this day, I hate PFK for that performance, terrible, was marking Berbatov for the first goal and could defend the cross for the third one.

My Dad and both uncles went to the match and I couldn't because I had an exam the next day.

How I rue it. Rafa still at the seat. First Torres scored a sublime goal, outpacing Tomkins and then finishing it wonderfully over Green. Then West Ham got a penalty and though, I stand by it, Diamanti slipped while taking it and touched the ball twice, West Ham equalized. I can't really remember Kuyt's goal (if anyone has the video, it would be appreciated) but I think he scrambled it in. Then right before half-time, Carlton Cole finished off a corner by heading the ball into the net, and I said to myself, here it comes again, the criticism for zonal-marking, because prior to the game, we'd conceded I think 4 goals in two goal to Spurs and Villa from set pieces.

After half-time, Rafa got the tactics right, brought on Babel to give us pace on the right wing and after many chances it finally worked when Babel after feinting twice/thrice, crossed a majestic ball to Torres who calmly headed in the winner.

Great match, which had its ups and downs and one of the highlights of that season for me.

Did you ever try getting hold of World Service when on holiday? I can remember Rushy getting a late equaliser at City whilst on a school trip in deepest France once. You're right about the whale song though, describes it perfectly! I also kept thinking Good Vibrations was being played over the top of the commentary!

It all seemed so much more exotic back then.  The team going to places you had hardly heard of. Facing teams that were the national champions and often consisted of the bulk of the national team.  That feeling that the entirety of the nation were against you (outside the hotel room with the air horns and whistles at 4am). The commentary sounding if it was coming from the dark side of the moon. 

Now it's just another team of journeyman Brazilians beamed live in HD from another identikit CL madeover stadium.  Ho hum.

A defeat that was relayed by Peter Jones and 3000 miles of static

The static didn't seem to matter as long as Peter Jones was commentating. He was the best radio commentator for letting you visualise the match, and the scene in general. Attention to detail was the key and he picked up on everything and made it sound exciting without getting over-excited. Remember sitting listening to those eastern european ties with this massive round pair of headphones on, looked like Mickey Mouse.

For some reason a game that I have always remembered was when Nottingham Forest beat us in the European Cup. None of that nonsense you have now in the Champions League where you can't meet a club from your own country in the early rounds. I just remember being so confident that we would beat Forest, even when we lost 2-0 in the first leg, I still thought it would be a formality at Anfield and we'd automatically go through. The arrogance of youth! But after the year before, the glory that was the second win and going for the hat-trick, it was such a bitter blow to me at the time. I remember they had a picture in the Echo the day after we lost, two girls in tears, still remember it, so clear in my mind.

A few other September 19th games I recall well:

1. Liverpool 4 - 0 Lech Poznan. A European Cup 1st round 2nd leg tie in 1984/5. John Wark scored his 1st Liverpool hat-trick, while Paul Walsh also netted in a comfortable win. Wark had also scored the 1st leg winner in Poland. He would get a 2nd hat-trick in a 5 - 0 win at West Brom later in the season, and end the season as our top scorer with 27 goals.

2. Liverpool 5 - 2 Wigan. A Littlewoods Cup 1st leg tie in 1989/90. Glenn Hysen opened the scoring early on to add to his goal the previous week against Crystal Palace, but we actually trailed 2 - 1 early in the 2nd half. Four more goals though from Barnes, Beardsley, and Rush 2 (though maybe not in that order?) saw us take a comfortable lead into the 2nd leg which was also played at Anfield as Wigan were still based at Springfield Park. A Steve Staunton treble finished the job off.

3. Liverpool 3 - 3 Charlton. A cracking League game in 1998/9 in which we were very fortunate to get a point against newly promoted Charlton. The visitors led twice only to be pegged back by a Fowler penalty and a stunning strike from Berger. Fowler scored a scrappy 2nd to give us the lead late on, but justice was done straight after when Charlton equalised. It's fair to say it wasn't Phil Babb's best performance in an LFC shirt that day.

I also agree with the comments about Peter Jones being an excellent radio commentator. Alan Green doesn't come close to him.

Late '60s, we were transported to New Zealand for family reasons (Ma was ill). Favourite Uncle was in the Navy. He had a wonderful array of crystal set radios. Mean anything to you? Best one he had was in a soap container. His duty was to have that radio primed & ready for listening to a game. We were forbidden to touch it. Never did. Had a lot to do with the size 14 boot that was well capable of sorting you.

His Missus was strict. (Never quite warmed to have a motley lot in her home. We returned the favour by never calling her Aunty). Pre match night, she would put the fire OUT so we woke up to a freezing lounge room. Turned out it was only mixed marriage of the family. Bitters fan.
Understood well from then importance of having the same faith    When the match was on, he'd do the commentary. Ne'er a noise from us at the excitment.
Bit different today with the choice of tv & camel-land streams..

a 4-1 win at newcastle in 1987, probably most famous for a steve nicol hatrick from right back. what a utility player he was!

losing 2-1 against united at old trafford in 2004 in rafa's first season. the game was conveniently put back to a monday night just to coincidentally allow rio ferdinand to return from his drugs ban to play in the game. we lost due to 2 goals from that goal machine mikel silvestre.

a 2-0 win against newcastle in 2006 including dirk kuyt's first liverpool goal and an alonso special from his own half.

and a frustrating 0-0 draw at home to stoke in 2008 which saw a perfectly good steven gerrard free kick disallowed by the referee.

What a performance that 1987 demolition of Newcastle was.  Total football.

And that Stoke game - one of the keys to us not winning the title that season I think.  However look at the long term picture, we may still be saddled dying a slow death under the two c*nts if we had.

just looking it up now. sept 80 we drew 2-2 against southampton at the dell. i have this goals of the 80s videos and i think this is on it. Souness and Fairclough for us, Chris Nicholl and someone else for them.

86 we lost 2-1 on the same ground. I think Kevin McDonald broke his leg and it ruined his Liverpool career.

southampton at the dell again in 1997. 1-1, i think Karl Heinz Riedle scored for us and Mark Wright played his last game for us. Kevin Davies scored for them iirc.

the united defeat in 2004 I think was the same day Brian Clough died. Steven Gerrard broke his foot in the match.

the 2006 game with newcastle with the alonso goal was something else. I jumped about 10 feet off the barstool for that.

2008 was such a let down at home to Stoke. We had just beat united the previous week and I really expected us to kick on from there. It felt like a defeat. was hungover to bits from my brothers stag which didnt help

Milne was one of Shankly's first signings as the great man invisaged we move from Division 2 to Division 1.

We met Gordon Milne in Turkey in 1998. He was manager at the club of our famous victory last season, Trabzonspor. Funny how the world goes round.

Today was the day Xabi netted that awesome goal against Newcastle from our own half, will never forget how much joy and amazement I felt at the same time when he did that.

Also, we were robbed a victory which could have given us the league when Gerrard'd freekick was disallowed against Stoke in the 0-0 in 2008.
