Today was the day Xabi netted that awesome goal against Newcastle from our own half, will never forget how much joy and amazement I felt at the same time when he did that.

We haven't had much luck down the years when playing on the 20th September, glad we're playing tomorrow rather than tonight.

Also, we were robbed a victory which could have given us the league when Gerrard'd freekick was disallowed against Stoke in the 0-0 in 2008.
Was in the KOP that day, Still to this day don't know why the goal was disallowed. After that we just couldnt break Stoke down. Should have been Gerrards 100th but he had to wait another 11 days :)

I know it's not quite September 21st but I'm blocked from posting on forums at work, so I'm getting these 2 stand out games for that date in now:

1. Everton 2 - 3 Liverpool. A classic derby in the 85/6 season which wasn't shown on TV as there was a dispute between TV and the Football League (although I've a 6 of the best video with highlights on). Dalglish curled in a stunning strike after 18 seconds, and it was 3 - 0 at half time thanks to Rush and McMahon. To be fair to Everton they came storming back in the 2nd half. Sharp made it 3 - 1 before Lineker hit the bar from close range, and then got a late goal to set up a grandstand finish. Dalglish twice missed when clean through in the last few minutes to which his response was "the manager is not happy about those misses!!". Terrific game played in pouring rain and 51,509 people applauded the teams off at the end.

2. Liverpool 5 - 1 Chelsea. Ruud Gullit had just taken over the Chelsea and they had started the season well, however, they were blown away at Anfield. Robbie Fowler headed us into an early lead, Patrick Berger's 1st goal Anfield goal for us made it 2, and Andy Myers made it 3 at the break with a superb diving header past his own keeper!! Berger made it 4 in 2 games with his 1st Kop end goal for us before Barnes got our 5th with a Fat Frank style deflected shot. Chelsea scored a consolation penalty, but they left a well beaten side.

A 2 - 0 Coca Cola Cup win against Burnley at Anfield in 1994 was the start of a successful campaign in that competition. Also a 1 - 0 defeat at Leeds in 1991 was important as it ultimately helped Leeds pip Man Utd to the title. Milan Baros scored his 1st Anfield goal in a 2 - 0 win against West Brom in 2002. Michael Owen had a penalty saved in the same game by the sub keeper after the 1st choice keeper was sent off for conceding the penalty, while West Brom should have had a penalty which would have resulted in an early bath for Sami. Fortunately David Elleray waved play on.

That 5-1 game against Chelsea was brilliant…in fact was it really 6 days ago we were reminiscing about paddy Berger’s debut at Leicester?! They were getting a lot of hype having had a decent start to the season and all the hype around Gullitt, signing Vialli etc. It felt great to smash them and I can remember Matteo having a storming game in the sweeper role, he strode forward like Hansen to set up one of Berger’s goals.

This game really stands out for me as I went off to uni the following day so it felt like a bit of an end of an era for me. From taking going to the match for granted I was suddenly in a position where I wasn’t sure when I’d next go. As it turns out, the only other game I went to that season was a defeat at Old Trafford. Some things never change.

My main memory from that list is that Jon Newby's brother was an entertaining poster on the old LFC Email List that was running at the time (places like RAWK being a mere twinkle in Ben's eye back then).  So we were all hoping he would do well.  He's since had what could be best described as a journeyman career and is currently playing for Colwyn Bay.

Scales made his LFC debut on 10th September 1994 in a 0 - 0 draw at home to West Ham. He made one superb tackle in the 1st half to deny Tony Cottee who was through on goal, even Cottee himself applauded the tackle.

McMahon certainly made his LFC League debut at Goodison. I was in the Gwladys Street End with a superb view of his 30 yard daisycutter that put us 3 up. What I can't recall is whether or not played against Southampton the previous Tuesday in the Screensport Super Cup (we are the only team to win that, not that anyone cares that much!!). Can anyone confirm one way or t'other?

Just to clear up the debuts thing I think the double asterisk on the info that Rafa La posted denotes a debut goal, so first goal for LFC rather than first game for LFC.  So for Scales and McMahon it was a first goal for the club today not the first game.

Busy old day this one. I went to that Villa game, gushed afterwards that Owen was a cross between Fowler and Macca. Feel a twat for ever thinking that!

That Chesterfield game was bleak, think we were two, maybe three nil down at one stage?

the Spurs game i remember vignal cracking the crossbar with a great shot

Jari Litmanen scored a belter aswell.

Heres one for you

He was dragged on to "the premiership" on itv. this was when they had match of the day effectively. he was put on a segment called either "andy's tactics truck" or "townsends tactics truck". basically townsend had this segment from a lorry where he would analyse from it. it gained a lot of bad press from day 1 because Ugo Ehiogu was on it.

he was playing for middlesboro that day and they got stuffed 4-0 at home to arsenal and he basically had to sit through Townsend going through all his mistakes which looked totally embarrassing for him.

i read here on a real old thread Litmanen was brought in on this segment, youd think after playing well Townsend would praise him. He proceeded to show him umpteen clips of Teddy Sheringham and how Litmanen should copy him.

segment got dropped soon after

I remember the 3-0 against Spurs more for a horrendous miss from Edgar Davids. Cracker from JAR too

I believe Jenas also missed a sitter that day, agree with JAR's goal. Was a cracking strike from 35/40 yards.

Look at Bellamy's miss in the move that led to Gonzalez's goal. He hit the post from 1 yard out, and luckily the rebound went to Gonzalez who hit it in. Bellamy doesn't celebrate if I recall, he's that pissed off with himself.

Just saw the replay, Gerrard was brilliant in the run up to the goal.

I remember going to that Bolton game. Harkness scored a cracker. We were pissing over Bolton at 4-0, got complacent, it went to 4-2, then Harkness scored. Fowler was at the peak of his powers. Everything he hit went in.

On the 24.09.1977 a certain Alan Hansen made his full debut v Derby County in a 1-0 victory for the reds.
Signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000. Six years earlier he was told in a Geoff Twentyman's letter that he didn't meet Liverpool's requirements when he went there on trial.
What a great player and servant he turned out to be for us.

That 1998 game v United was on a Thursday night if I recall correctly for some reason. Friedel in goal let a soft one in, or made some kind of mistake that led to a goal. We also conceded the routine non penalty; I think Mcateer gave it away for a handball when a United player pulled his arm out and made him handball it.

That Basel game was frustrating. Should have buried them before they equalised. Ultimately cost us qualification.

Wasnt it on this weekend whene we lost at The DEll 2 1.   It was the game where Kevin Macdonald broke his leg. It was fuckin terrible as it was rightt next to the goal at our end and you could see it twisted. Ive never heard anything like it.

A day late here, but a few very hazy memories of that Ljubljana trip...the journey via Klagenfurt in Austria was good, up over the mountains, then settling in for the usual pre-match session in the centre of the attractive old city. Rumours of dangerous 'Green Dragons' proved unfounded, but I think some had a few run ins with the local ultras. Can't remember much of the match except this old soviet style stadium & the club 'shop' being in a sort of cage on the terracing. Can remember a bit more than my mate though who spent the entire 90 minutes fast asleep on a step at the back of the terrace. Strong stuff that Slovenian ale!
