Toranaga is a bad leader. Like Ten Hag.

(I'm kidding - but that was rough ...)

you know an episode was amazing when you can only talk in spoilers
Spoiler
amazed the old guy was in on it ("did his duty".) What balls he has!

I totally bought it as well, he did look sad, and presented himself as tough. Only when he broke down a little later to Mariko did he reveal the dude was in on the plan and it was a masterful level of planning. Damn, seppuku to sell a plan. Old dude knew the stakes, "knew his duty" as Toranaga puts it.

I don't think Blackthorne is in on it, cause of the "predictable" comment. Toranaga is a master at playing anyone and everything. I also laughed at the Catholic church spot being right next to the brothel.
It seems to be diverging from the book. I hope so actually.

Spoiler
I didn't think Toranaga was going to go meekly, but then when he was being so stubborn with Hiromatsu and allowed him to commit Seppukku, I started to think he was going to surrender in Osaka after all. To actually take his own life as a part of the plan was both nuts and typical.

Sticking the church next to the Brothel was a proper "fuck you" statement. Mind you, the most frequent visitors will likely be the Catholic Priests ;D

Only got on this today, watched all 8 episodes this week, loved it.  Wish I'd realised there are two more though, I should have waited for all 10

I'll have to read the book now.

Yes, I did the same through to episode 7.

In this day and age it seems like such a gamble to make slow-paced, dialogue-heavy drama. It’s great that they’ve had the courage to do so with this. I’ve seen so much streaming produced dogshit series of books I’ve loved in the last few years.

That's a high bar as well isn't it, Kiksuya is one of the best episodes ever, possibly of anything put to film, including big screen.

I think this could make Anna Sawai into a big star

I can see a similar trajectory to that of Pablo Pascal after Game of Thrones,
just needs the right project.

FYI, Gracia Hosokawa was born Akechi Tama, the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide, a retainer of Oda Nobunaga. Mitsuhide is best known for betraying Nobunaga and forcing the suicide of Nobunaga and his heir. Mitsuhide had a short lived spell as the most powerful man in Japan, before being beaten by Nobunaga's subordinate Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi was the undisputed ruler in Japan from that point until his death.

FX have unearthed a monster of a good show and Episode 9 was the best thing I've seen on TV this year, by a mile. Having not read the books or knowing anything I just wonder is there enough material to keep the show going after the finale next week. I really hope so. Still hard to believe they had the balls to make this show, it can't have been cheap and I wonder would the younger generation have the attention span to enjoy this? Absolutely nothing is handed to the viewer on a plate.

I hope they don't try and make Shogun 2. It would be like making Romeo & Juliet 2. This is based on historical events but the power of this series is the personal relationships between the three central characters and the extended relationships and the dynamics that stem from them.

I would love to see this team maybe make new versions of other stories set in Japan - remakes and expansion of some of Kurosawa's great movies for example.

Ran, Kagemusha, Throne of Blood would all be possibilities, but none of them has that "stranger in a stranger land" component that comes from Blackthorn's experience at the heart of the action.
