7 players you’d have loved to see play for Liverpool
« on: April 21, 2024, 07:06:27 pm »
Just a bit of fun. Pick 7 players you’d have loved see play for Liverpool.

When mulling this I noticed I was picking a lot of ex Arsenal players. Ian Wright, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira immediately spring to mind. Michael Laudrup and Peter Schmeicel also sprung to mind.

Dream picks - the real Ronaldo Fenomeno and Roberto Baggio.

Interesting one this. I've long maintained that certain players (although greats of the game) would never have been good "fits" at certain clubs. The real Ronaldo being a good example. Undoubtedly a bull of a forward in his prime, but just not a "Liverpool player" in my opinion. Same goes for Ibrahimovic, Eto'o, Figo, and even Mardonna (who I loved). I just can't "see them" in a red shirt

On the other hand, I reckon David Villa, Gabriel Batistuta, Thierry Henry, Davor Suker, Alessandro Del Piero, Denis Bergkamp, Michael Laudrup, and Lothar Matthaus would have all fit us like a glove. It's hard to explain, I but there's some "Liverpool" about all of them that I just don't see in the others

Whether they were fits or not, would loved to have seen Messi, Ronaldo (9), Maldini, Maradona, Van Basten, Bergkamp, Baresi and ah shit that's 7, it could have been 70 in all honesty.

Having grown up in the 70’s and 80’s watching us win all before us and then watching us fall of a cliff under Sounness in the early 90’s these are the players I’d have liked him to sign for us when he was the biggest spending manager in world football and mostly buying shite to replace genuine legends.

Roy Keane
Alan Shearer
Tim Flowers
Colin Hendry
Gary Parker
Gary Speed
Brian Laudrup

Some very obvious names you could pick out, but trying to think pragmatically, which players might've taken us to the next level and helped us to major trophies, that were very gettable at one time or another.

Always felt under Rafa we had a superb spine but lacked quality on the wings. Dani Alves as a marauding full back certainly would've helped. Imagine Robben and Ribery on the wings at that time with Masch, Gerrard, Alonso and Torres for company!

David Villa was linked for ages but never happened, he might've been better to have around the place than Voronin and Ngog.

Going a bit further back to Houllier, I reliably believed at 11 years old that Harry Kewell was the missing link when we signed him, and he may well have been if he stayed fit. Robert Pires of that era might've been enough to win us a league.

I remember us being linked to Ronaldo and Raul during Rafa's time. Both were past their best by that point (although Raul did have plenty more goals in him tbf) but it certainly would've been really cool to see. Having Morientes for that short spell was cool enough!

More recently it's harder to say because I watch less and less football outside of watching us. At varying times in Klopps era weve been both one centre back (the Kabak year) and one centre midfielder short (last year) which probably would've seen us put proper challenges together instead of having a couple of lost seasons. Not sure who'd have been the perfect fit recently for those positions?

There we go. Alves, Robben, Ribery, Villa, Pires, Ronaldo, Raul.

ill go for ones that we could have realistically signed.

Michael Laudrup- a little before my time but i remember reading how we were close to signing him back in the early 90s. Things might have been different for us in the early 90s if we had him. He was insanely good even as he got older. Ill never forget his performance vrs Nigeria in the 98 world cup. Nigeria were accused of being bottlers but in reality an old Laudrup rolled back the clock for 45 minutes.

Luka Modric- think we were linked with him when he was at Dinamo Zagreb and before he went to Spurs. one of the greatest players i have ever seen.

Roberto Carlos- Feel we could have taken advantage of that mug Hodgson and signed him before real madrid did.

Kevin De Bruyne-He was a liverpool supporter growing up so we could have got him before he joined city.

Matias Sammer- We badly  needed a top centre half in the late 90s and i think i recall us being linked with him. He was one of the best in the world at the time.

David Villa- were linked with him heavily when he as at Zaragoza . what a player he turned out to be.

Roy Keane- If Kenny was still our manager at that time we would probably have signed him. The leadership we lacked so badly throughout the 90s.

Had forgotten how often we were linked with David Villa before he joined Valencia. At the time I assumed he was going to be a fairly average La Liga signing like Josemi. How wrong I was!

In terms of the realistic types/players we were relatively seriously linked with:

Michael Laudrup - slightly before my time but would have been incredible to watch (until he fel out with every and joined Man United for the LOLs).

Marcel Desailly - fairly sure we were in for him when Chelsea signed him. At the time we were third and fourth best sides and we were crying out for a defensive leader.

Luis Figo - past his best but I think we did try and sign him in 2005 but he joined Inter instead. Not sure how such a big name would have fitted Rafa’s tactical setup but would have been good to see him in action.

Damien Duff - fitted what we needed like a glove but joined Chelsea instead. We did sign Kewell that same summer and I was delighted but sadly didn’t quite work out as hoped.

Nicolas Anelka - he did play for us but still wish we’d signed him permanently

David Silva - again, would have been great for us and thought we’d have been well
Placed to sign him given our Spanish connections at the time.

David Villa - as above.

We were in to sign Frank Worthington, but he failed a medical due to high blood pressure [largely because of his partying lifestyle] so Shanks sent him to Majorca for a week for health reasons [one of the worst things Shanks did given Frank Worthington's lifestyle, even in the early 70s Majorca had a reputation as a party place], Frank Worthington returned with even higher blood pressure so the transfer fell through.

Damien Duff - fitted what we needed like a glove but joined Chelsea instead. We did sign Kewell that same summer and I was delighted but sadly didn’t quite work out as hoped.
That era of us being heavily linked with the "right" player but missing out to clubs with more money/ambition was hard going.  The first I can remember was Jaap Stam and I'm convinced we'd have won league titles if we'd signed him.  Instead we signed Rigobert Song and Frode Kippe.

Players that we probably could have signed or were heavily linked with that would have transformed us during those (relatively) barren years:
Roy Keane
Jaap Stam
Damien Duff
Arjen Robben
Robert Pires
Marc Overmars
Didier Drogba (I remember him being nearly unplayable when we played Marseille but instead we signed Djibril Cisse from the same league)

Generally brilliant players from my eras that I would have loved to see play for us:
Baresi
Stoichkov
Romario
Roberto Carlos
Messi
Kaka
Ribery
