Sorry for the bump but the GAA fund-raiser for Sean is this Sunday so if anyone is near Navan then please consider going.

If I remember then I'll try and take some photos.

Earlier today I went to the GAA fundraiser for Sean at Navan, Ireland.

Yesterday it was awful weather and I feared that it would be the same today. However the sun shone even though it was a bit cold.

I arrived early and took some photos but I've just found that the folder that I saved them to is corrupt.

The game was between Dublin (who are currently the best GAA team in Ireland) against Sean's county Navan. Dublin left most of their stars at home but it was a keenly fought match and the result was a win to Meath.

Sean's wife Martina was there as were others who organise the fundraising.

Santa arrived to do nets at half time for the penalty shootout.

Here's the only photo I have.......that's me in the black coat under the letter "a". Don't know what happened to Santa but it looks like he was headless.

Anyway please try to help as there's a very long journey ahead for Sean. He still cannot sit or speak but I hope that he can now understand what is going on around him.

No person should go to any sports game and sustain the sickening injuries that Sean did.

A man has admitted assaulting a Liverpool fan outside the club's Anfield stadium ahead of a Champions League semi-final.

Simone Mastrelli pleaded guilty to attacking Sean Cox, 53, who was left with severe brain injuries before Liverpool played Roma last April.

At Preston Crown Court, Mastrelli, 30 and from Rome, admitted the attack but denied violent disorder.

I couldn't believe what I just heard.  Three and a half years!  The judge said the sentence would have been longer but he had to give credit (!) for him pleading guilty.  This despite Simone Mastrelli - note the name - trying every tactic in the book to avoid extradition!  So he'd tried and tried to wriggle out of facing punishment for putting a good man in a very bad way for the rest of his life and gets what has to be regarded as a veery weak sentence!

I know there's loads of teeth-gnashing in the gutter press from those who don't know what day it is but on this occasion, I am going to allow myself some bitterness about this abysmal so-called sentence.  I believe it's not long enough and I hope an additional private prosecution can be taken out against him to lengthen the misery this verminous excuse for a human being has to endure.

My housemate works for the CPS and has looked at the sentencing guidelines for GBH (this is what he pleaded guilty to according the BBC) and feels that it has been put as a category 2 which has a starting point of 6 years and could be brought down to 3.5 with a guilty plea. However cat 1 would have a starting point of 12 years before being brought down by a guilty plea.

Either way, absolutely anyone can complain that they feel the sentence is too lenient by writing to the Attorney General. You can find the details on how to do this here

It’s disgusting how lenient that sentence is. This wasn’t some spur of the moment drunken brawl after a night out, it was a group of people intent on causing serious harm to innocent people. They were armed with weapons and knew that they could do some serious harm, they were also people who were known to police and had a history of violence.

3.5 years is nothing for what he’s done, I bet he’ll only have to serve half of that sentence. I seriously hope that enough can be done to increase his sentence.

Well if GBH means Grievous Bodily Harm as i think it does, I find i'm pretty opposed to this concept of categories. You can inflict a GBH thats not quite as heinous as a different GBH? and what happened to Sean is not in the tougher part anyway?

I'm not a massive proponent of jailing people in general but premeditated extreme carelessness with life for adrenaline kicks, with catastrophic results- just seems like the rule of law kind of was born right there, with that particular spot in mind really. They are only pricing it at 14% if murder gets you 25 years.

And to add insult to injury his brief is asking that the number of days he was under house arrest before extradition to be taken off his sentence. Not sure how many exactly but its 100+.

It's always irked me that you can basically escape a severe sentence just by pleading guilty.  I knew someone who died in a car crash, along with their mum, when they got hit by some bastard stoner coming the wrong way.  He never showed an ounce of remorse but only got seven years after pleading guilty.  On good behaviour you can probably get out in less time.

This happened about 16 years ago.  I still think about it and it still makes me mad, thinking he's gone back to his life.  I can only hope the enormity of what he'd done hit him once inside and that he's spent the rest of his life since trying to make up for it.

The CPS can appeal a sentence they think is too light, right?

You don't have to wait for the CPS to appeal it, you can do it if you feel the sentence is too light. Just write to the Attorney General on the link I provide here.

If at least one person writes then it had to be reviewed.

Disgusting that somebody who goes to a match looking to hurt somebody only gets 3.5 years. Nobody should end up in hospital due to some scum that can't behave normally.

Anyone know the teams for the match at Aviva (just bought my ticket).

Tickets are not selling as well as expected, hopefully it picks up now. It is between 50-60 euro for an adult ticket so anyone traveling up from the country will have train fare/ hotel to fork out as well as food /drink. If your bringing the kids then your a fair bit out of pocket. I think maybe a pre season game in the Aviva with Legends against the first team would have been a better idea and would have raised more for Sean.I don’t know if the current feeling towards the FAI will hinder any ticket sales . I will do the night run that is on in April.

Yes the tickets are a bit steeply priced for this type of match. You've got to add on admin fee and then if needed optional ticket insurance (which I ticked no and got charged for it) so that takes the price up to €60 to €70. I'm going but I certainly wouldn't pay this price other than it is for Sean.

Thats the only reason I’m going lad, could have been any of us going over for a match and then having our and our families life turned upside down , it’s very sad .With the state of the FAI people will be a bit aprhensive paying that much as they would be unsure how much is going to Sean’s family.I really hope for their sake it is close to a full house.

Thanks for the link.....I sent an email asking for the sentence to be reviewed. I really do not understand why anyone who raises their hand in the street to inflict injury should get such a short sentence. I guess he didn't intend to cause such devastating injuries but Mastrelli made a decision whereas Sean had no say at all.

I sent the words of Sean's daughter which will resonate will anyone who has a loved one whose life has been so brutally changed:

"A mentor, a proud family man with great community spirit.
This violent and unprovoked attack left dad in a dire situation.
His future is uncertain. We don't know how he will progress and that really frightens us.
Over the past 10 months we have spent all our time at dad's bedside and have celebrated birthdays and Christmas when all we want is our dad to be home.
We hope and pray every day to see improvement in our dad. The focus is on getting dad the proper care he needs.
My dad went to watch his beloved team, Liverpool, and he never came home."

Hope you sell as many as possible for the game - it should be a real boost.

Not sure who set the prices but they are a bit silly for a charity game. You have to get the bums on seats for these things. Should be more like 30 euro.
