Advantage City next season then. We'll have to spend big in the summer to offset this. Can we send Caf the bill?

Whilst this isn't ideal in any way, I do feel as at ease as I can about it - given the current set-up within our club. No point losing our heads.

We'll plan and prepare for this eventuality as best we can.

plus the players very much give a shit, representing their countries in it is the highest echelon for many. As much as that is hard to understand for fans of the players club team!

But really, something needs to be done about the 2 year thing, it's ridiculous.

Would think Signings as a direct result of losing players to this is very unlikely, or at least it hasn’t been our MO previously.

If it was every four years I’d be fine with the January/February timing but every two years is a massive annoyance. Pretty sure AFCON just sit there thinking of ways in which they can disrupt leagues around Europe

Possible Keita and Salah or Mane could be sold in the summer with this. We can't lose three first XI players at the same time for 2 months of the season. Plus the fact when they return they need a break anyway or to readjust.

At the least we'll have to go big on a forward who can play wide.

What a pain this is. Why is this needed every 2 years (18 months since the last one)?

Not sure it stopped any club in the past.

Whilst I don't think it stops clubs buying African players, I do think it's stops clubs buying too many African players.

Some of yous really have selective memories. We signed Mane when at the time the AFCON was taking place in January, fully aware that he would be gone for that period. we followed that with signing Salah, when again at the time AFCON was still scheduled to take place in January [that change took place later].

Aside from that, I am perplexed why anyone would think that Klopp would sell a player because he won't be able to use him for a month. Considering he waited an entire year to work with Keita for instance, waited a year for Ox [and not signed his replacement],etc..

What's the reason?

@tariqpanja
FIFA for the last 6 months has effectively taken control of the Confederation of African Football. Today it's announced the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has been moved to Jan. That means it won't clash with FIFA's new Club World Cup.

Fantastic, hopefully we can run a bunch of african players into the ground in both tournaments back to back while they make rich people in FIFA and national FAs money in exchange for their health.

While I wouldn’t put it past FIFA to move it to suit them, I thought this was down to the rainy season in Cameroon, or is that just a convenient excuse?

Not really, the 2019 edition was going to take place in the summer in Cameroon but none of the stadiums were ready with six months to go so they moved it to Egypt who had most of the stadiums built for it anyways.

And if weather is the reason, presumably it means Côte d'Ivoire 2023 will also be moved to January, three weeks after the World Cup finishes in Qatar. (I also remain deeply sceptical this will be in Cameroon).

I can see us not shying from spending the money on someone like Sancho then considering Shaq is likely to be gone in the summer with Roma eyeing him up now.

We wont pay 100million for Sancho. can't see it happening.

The only good thing is we have enough time to scout a replacement and to prepare for this unfortunate situaton,

Such a stupid decision. African players are now going to the best clubs on the planet and they're likely to miss 6 weeks cause of this tournament. Just a crazy decision. Don't see us going down the African market anytime soon while we currently have 3 on our books.

This tournament needs playing every 4 years as well. Ridiculous that it's played every 2 years.

Incoming Blue Moon conspiracy that this proves FIFA/UEFA have already fixed us winning CL this year so are moving the AFCON away from CWC to ensure can ensure our star players are available for their new look tournament.

The sensible thing would have been to postpone the next comp to 2022 (2 and half years after the 2019 one), so also eliminating the near-clash with the World Cup.

But sense and football authorities.... yeah....

A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"
