Stam, Vidic, Terry, Ferdinand - all great CBs for sure, but if you put Van Dijk in those teams, he would've performed just as well. Whereas I don't think Vidic or Terry in particular (didn't see enough of Stam) could've played nearly as well in our side.

The main reason Van Dijk is underrated is because he played for a Liverpool team that had to compete with a bunch of cheats and couldn't outspend the rest of the league like Man Utd or Chelsea did back in the day, so doesn't have the same medal haul.

You gotta be pretty dumb not to place VVD up there. Some times I guess people don’t wanna have recency bias but the way we defend VVD defends in a pretty much 2 v 2 central defence all season long. The lack of athletic performance then compared to now made Vidic, Terry etc look good. Defend deep and against shite across most of the league when there were maybe 3 or at a push 4 good teams in the league until the late 00s.  That’s why you have guys like Gary Neville as one of the best RBs in PL history lol. He’d be torn apart by the modern attacker.

Much more asked of centre backs in todays league in my honest opinion. There’s a goal that Riise scored in a 1-1 at Highbury in 02 under Houllier if people remember when Gerrard played a through pass from inside his half and the CBs were running in mud trying to get back lol and the Arsenal keeper just stayed on his line and let Riise slot the ball. If that happens in this era, the defenders are getting slaughtered by fans. Shite like that was common back then.

He was struggling last season, seemed unfocused and annoyed, and I was worried that he was finished as a world class player. But he has made a massive comeback this season, and this is a key reason why the team at large has improved so much.

I am guessing it didn't help that last season the opponents seemed to be at the defensive line in the blink of an eye regularly with no midfield to slow them down. It probably got the defenders a bit skittish.

But then - VVD also said that he felt he didn't play well last year either - so he accepted a lot of blame too.

These stats are insane.

In his past four league games, Van Dijk has contested 25 duels and won 24. The defender was six for six against Luton, two for two against Brentford, six for six against Burnley and eight from nine on a day of disappointment at Arsenal.

The last two games, with a depleted squad / team and the kids playing he stepped up and put in two of the best captains performances ive seen. I will always remember these games. A colossus at the back, masterful. We looked like we might find it difficult to score and so he takes it upon himself to go up and bang in the goals, bullying the opposition, nothing they could do!!. Should be three in two from a centre half. simply wondrous.

The van Dijk Final. He was tremendous yesterday, and remains the best defender I've personally ever seen. The only fault you might have had with his game in the past was the amount of goals he scores (and his record certainly isn't bad), but he's starting to contribute in that respect more consistently now as well.

This. I was shocked at how fresh he looked when everybody else was on the floor. Chelsea players were done by the end of regulation time. Many of ours were walking wounded too, but Virgil looked like he could play a whole other match.

Bumping this man’s thread as he was utterly brilliant today.

Konate was excellent but Van Dijk’s positioning, reaction to danger and overall performance was astonishingly good today.

Supreme defender, he really is the coolest player on the pitch.
I’ve plenty links to the clubs playing and backroom staff as many on here know thank you very much. Fair enough, I admire your optimism. But you’re absolute ostriches if you think this squad, even with 2 or 3 new, “cut price” players with potential get us anywhere close
