Police are dealing with an "ongoing incident" on board an oil tanker situated off the Isle of Wight.

The crude oil tanker, the Liberian-registered Nave Andromeda, is known to have stowaways on board and was due to dock in Southampton earlier.

BBC South Transport Correspondent Paul Clifton said there were reports stowaways had become violent.

The island's MP Bob Seely said he feared the captain "may not be in full control" of the vessel.


Lawyers representing the vessel's owners said they knew of the stowaways but the incident was "100% not a hijacking", despite reports.

Hampshire Constabulary said the 240ft-long (73m) ship was currently situated south of the Isle of Wight.

They are either stowaways or immigrants or refugees, I don’t think anyone is suggesting they are terrorists or hijackers.

Watched a live report earlier from a reporter located somewhere in the vicinity, IOW I guess.  Bit of a dramatic intro for him and then as he began his live report he said “I’ve just had a text that it’s all over”. 

So the report didn’t quite live up to the drama intro.
