I echo what's been said. Incredible TV, it's quite a shame we didn't have much episodes like these, character driven instead of plot driven.

What a blow that was to the Man in Black though was it? How he was duped. What was the quote about misunderstanding intentions? The maze is not for you William! It made me want to watch the first season again just to go through the times the maze made it on screen.

The best bit about that episode. Although I did enjoy it more than I have other ones in this series.

I said further up that this song fitted in so well with the episode, given the bit at the beginning with the Ghost Nation chief and his wife talking about taking their hearts with them, but this full version is amazing. That kind out of tune violin sounds haunting.

This series has really gone up a couple of notches since Anthony Hopkins has been in them.

Was that not supposed to be in? I noticed it and took it to be guests in the park just pissing around in the background to contrast with the death and violence going on between the hosts just a few feet in front of them.

Yeah it was definitely before the hosts could hurt the guests, so I think there is enough scope for it to be intentional albeit not very fitting with everything else that goes on.

That's kind of the point I think. It's the juxtaposition of the guests pissing about and not caring what's going on  right in front of their eyes as the main host in this episode is essentially going through an existential crisis.

There's a similar shot later in the episode with guests in the background and the host walks over to them and deliberately gets himself killed.

exactly what i thought. He was telling the story of his past and going through his story lines, i took it that he's going through his awakening / crisis because of humans / guests while the guests are pissing around and not even paying attention.

No way that's extra's fucking around.

There is something about this show that annoys me now. I mean, the logic is long gone, now, everything is explained in a long, convoluted way, which may work out in the end, but watching a whole season of pure BS waiting for a plot trick to explain everything away is not great.

Spoiler
A case in point is the Man in Black. He was shot, by now, I thought someone would finish him off for good. Instead, he was crawling around, found by Indians, who said "quick death is too easy for him". I thought he was going to mercilessly torture and kill him. No, he brought the guy and started telling a long pointless story until MIBs daughter showed up and asked for her dad. And tht way, MIB was allowed to leave.

WTF was that? How does that even make sense?

Yes.

Spoiler

He was telling the story to the little girl. Then, it turned out, he was telling it to her mother?
Either way, the long story about his background seemed pointless, about his girlfriend/wife. I mean, do they have to know?

In reality, he is telling the story to us. But I personally kept wondering "what is he going to do to MIB", which took a firm backseat. The whole thing was strange, the guy drags MIB to the Indian camp, and I think "here we go, torture time", but he goes to the girl and tells a long story about his journey, his wife/gf, this and that. And then gets up and allows MiB to leave. Terrible stuff.
[close]
By the way, the Samurai storyline was a bit pointless, too.
Spoiler
Either I missed its importance entirely, or it wouldn't change a single thing if that whole Samurai thing never occurred?
And I say this as a huge Samurai/Japanese culture fan. It was very disappointing how little it mattered.

Hmmm masterpiece seems OTT, but I think I'm just along for the ride so it's just one big long mishmash of stuff this year.

This.

I have invested 2 seasons worth of time on this one, and am readying myself for the next plot twist that can explain away everything. But Westworld has been the most disappointing show of the year so far for me. After legendary first season, I couldn't wait for this one. But now, I am waiting and watching 2-3 episodes a time.

I hope the showrunners are seeing the trends with viewer interests and fix the next season (if there is one).

So your opinion on the show translates as trends with other viewers?

I think this season was a slow burner but the last 4-5 episodes have been superb and just as good as anything from series 1.

Underwhelming episode 9 IMO. The "hat twist" was pretty laughable. How do they scan the guest's brains in Rajworld and Shogun World where they don't wear hats? Also what if a guest doesn't want to wear a hat? Just ludicrous really and the kind of silliness I thought this show was meant to be above.

Apart from that the MIB killing his daughter just annoyed me. Think it's just a bit too bleak a path for this show to go down.

It's been up and down this season.  Some flashes of the greatness of the first season but a lot of missteps. When I thought season 1 misstepped it turned out that it was actually clever misdirection. I'm sticking with it and would for another season, but it's a shadow of season 1.

It has not been as good as the first season but I'm still enjoying it. Didn't the scripts for the second season get leaked and they had to rewrite a lot of it? I might have that wrong but it could explain the reason behind the muddled nature of this season.

They weren't leaked, but apparently, fans pre-empted the planned storyline so they decided to change it. It was before scripting stage though so maybe not much of an excuse.

I am enjoying it - it's still better than 99% of TV out there - I just had high expectations.

I don't know what it was, but I don't it's a good reason to change it. You've got a couple of showrunners, and a handful of writers coming up with ideas, vs hundreds or thousands on reddit coming up with all sorts of guesses, and are bound to get things right. But if the makers aren't sticking with their best ideas, you get lower quality.

I saw that less people are watching based on Wikipedia stats for the show.

Summer plus World Cup maybe accounts for this.

1st season aired Oct - December.
Meaning more people are in front of TV Oct-Dec?

I thought the biggest box office movies come out in the summer?

That's a fair point, but if this show kept the quality, the viewer numbers would actually go up. That's what happens. Unlike the first season, this is not an unknown show, this is a show that has now its own following, popularity, which brings in more numbers.

Look at GoT, the trend is pretty clear

The starting point (i.e., the first season) of Westworld wasn't that different. I really thought this is going to be HBOs new GoT. But the way it is going, not a single chance.
