Spartacus: Blood and Sand
« on: March 2, 2010, 06:00:15 am »

New show that has been airing in North America.

Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartacus:_Blood_and_Sand

IMDB:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1442449/

To be honest it isn't that great, seems to be a combination of Rome, Gladiator, and 300. But it still is amusing, so if you enjoy the story of Gladiator, the visual effects of 300, and a weak attempt to match the dialogue of Rome, ohh and also the odd tit  ;D, this might be for you.

Edit: Lets remember to use the spoiler alert.

If Gladiator was remade as straight-to-video soft porn, it would be this.  I read somewhere this has already been commissioned for a 2nd series.

I watched the first one, and fairplay on the nudity, but I don't know if it's worth sitting through the terrible acting and ridiculous action.

I brought this show up in another thread, the gist of the thread was "bad shows that are so bad they are good". I've changed my mind, it's just shit. Once the novelty of slow motion blood splatter and random boob wore off it became too mind numbingly stupid to carry on watching. Maybe if it were only a half hour show, 50 minutes is too much.

i've watched 7 episodes of this crap, as i'm neglected by no Heroes, Two and a Half Men, Misfits et al disappearing from our screens. I love Roman periodic drama/action but this is a bit shite to be honest, nowhere near as good as Rome which was the best i've seen in terms of ancient rome.

Twist!

Andy Whitfield, who’s currently starring in the Starz drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and will begin treatment immediately in New Zealand. As a result, production on the second season of Spartacus — which was scheduled to get underway later this month — has been delayed.

Whitfield’s cancer was detected early and his prognosis is good. “I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” said Whitfield in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy,” said Starz president Chris Albrecht. “His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time.” (EW)

Hope he recovers alright!

Think I read somewhere there's a Rome movie in the works. Initially there were supposed to be a couple more seasons where they'd delve into new territory but ratings weren't good enough.

Watched all 7 episodes Monday and Tuesday, is pretty good. Must say when Xena : Warrior Princess came out , I was always like man I wish she would get her tits out. Someone must have been listening! And just to make it even better they made her hair red. So thanks the GODS ;)

The show itself is watchable and the fight scenes are a bit done up. But all in all a pretty good series.

Would you say episode one is par for the course is it better or worse than the average episode?

Episode one is pretty par for the course. Sex and violence is a prevalent theme throughout the whole series. The graphics for the blood don't change. The story does develop a bit further from the first episode onwards, with some interesting twists here and there. If you found the first episode watchable the rest are watchable as well.

yeh that was annoying, 'ratings', despite the fact that critics rated it very highly, it's about the unintelligent american audience. Damn them! though they keep Charlie Sheen going :D i'll give them that!

Batiatus (John Hannah) as been bloody excellent in this, its really heated up in the last few episodes with the plot, and his character. Can't wait for the season finale. Don't care what anyone says, this has become one of my favourite shows.

I'd say its more the fickle tv execs who dont give things a chance to grow, Firefly would be a good example.

Tv execs go on ratings.... if it doesn't do well in the first season bye bye!
Firefly prime example... loved it, but didn't do well in the ratings so it got the chop

But when TV execs fuck with shows, as they did with Firefly, changing it's time weekly, probably because before it even aired tehy assumed it would fail, they must take the blame.

As for Rome, it had run it's course after two series and hit the high points it was aiming for, despite being historically inaccurate. It was done, that is that. Complain about stuff like Carnivale and Deadwood.

I'm actually liking this now, last 3/4 episodes have been good. Nice change of story and it looks like Spartacus is finally going to break out, does it actually have any historical foundation at all this show? as in will it follow the real story of Spartacus and the Slave rebellion?

Yeah that's true as well, put a show in a bad slot and it's never gonna do well.
Carnivale was another great show.

Yep. Spartacus and Crixus were historical figures whose "break out" led to the third servantile war if I remember correctly.

This is pretty good, only just started watching it last week up to episode 7.

Certainly plenty of eye candy, the drama is getting interesting and either I'm getting used to wooden acting or that's improved. No point in expecting historical accuracy, but it's a fun romp.

Yeah hope Andy Whitfield (Spartacus) makes a recovery from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Same disease that killed David Rocastle, amongst many. Fingers crossed Andy recovers.
