More on topic... walked through Bold St yesterday. A few restaurants where installing outdoors seating on the road. More people than usual were walking on the road. Bollards were up at the top and bottom, and plant boxes blocking the side streets. There were signs saying it's only pedestrianised between 10am and 6am, so I think they have 6-10am for deliveries to the shops.

Pissing down as we speak. ;D

In France the restaurants have robust, motorised rain covers which are great unless you are sitting on the perimeter but these things are permanent fixtures and only occasionally used in summer. Just hope our experimental al fresco dining areas have some solution to our unfortunate weather.

I don’t think these do as just temporary, but would be good if Castle St does get fully pedestrianised if they did something more permanent with covers, as the pavement there is well big enough to have that and would mean they can be all year round.

Castle Street is ideal. Wide pavements and scenic views to the Victoria Monument and the Town Hall.

I've often sat outside McGuffies staring in wonder at the buildings opposite. They are quite striking but alcohol does increase your sense of wonderment.

Yeah I loved sitting outside there.. until they brought me beer in a schooner and it ruined my entire week.

Wen to Bruges one October with an ex, it was bloody freezing, but all the restaurants had these outside seating areas with huge fires/heaters blasting out hot air. I was able to sit outside in just jeans and a t-shirt, coat and jumper taken off. That'd obviously only apply to us soft shite blokes, Scouse women seem to dress like its summer in the middle of winter from what I've seen.

When you say a schooner do you mean a glass containing 2/3 of a pint for which they charge the price of a pint?

A scandal.

I do indeed. Bad enough paying a fiver a pint, let alone a fiver for one of those  ;D

I guess there are two options if the street were indeed to be 'fully pedestrianised'.

Either you'd have the current road as the seating area and the current pavements as the 'walkway', and have a central dining area with awnings running down the middle, or you'd have more like up on the Liverpool One terrace, where you've got awnings extending out from the restaurants themselves with large seating areas spilling out towards the current road (which would become the walkway).

I quite like the idea of the former personally, but our weather probably lends itself more towards the latter (food remains under awnings even when being brought to the table).

Yeah could be done a few ways depending on just how “pedestrianised” they want it to be. If they want vehicle access at some times for deliveries, etc. then guess the most obvious is to keep the road but it becomes the walkway when it’s closed and then each place can have their own outdoor area on the current pavement.

Think I’d rather that than a concert square sort of thing where you got a central covered area going down the middle. Stops people going there and using it without spending in the bars/restaurants so hopefully stops it becoming another concert square.

I had a Moroccan cinnamon coffee under Kasbah's varanda on Saturday morning in the rain on Bold Street. Was glorious. Only went because Italian Bakery Club was closed.

That sounds fantastic.  Making a mental note of that.  Going to make my first visit into town for Rennies and Probe at some point either side of the weekend, and that might just fit the bill if it's quiet enough for walk-ins.

Rennie's wasn't open when I walked past it last week, but then it was a Sunday.

I've noticed since the cafes and stuff started reopening that it's a bit of a mixed bag whether you can sit in or still only get takeout.  Can sit in places like Milo's or Pippin's Corner on Lark Lane, but not the Watering Can up by Greenbank Park.  Seating areas in most coffee shop chains are off limits too, as a Greggs'.

It's really frustrating when the weather is dull, cold and shitty.
I don't always visit Lobster Pot.  But when I do. I sit.

Bold St , Lord St and one in St Johns.
