all that software nidgemo, does it not fill up the hard drive and do you have it all backed up on discs so it can be reinstalled when the macbook crashes

OK, I'll ask Nidge then.

Nidge,

I'm buying a macbook soon. Is it worth going for the 2ghz core 2 duo, or will the 1.83ghz suffice? My usage rate will be HIGH.

Thanks, Nidge'll Fix It

High useage in what sense? What'll you be using it for?

Personally, I would (and DID a few weeks ago) go for a refurbed 2Ghz dual core. They're new anyway, just have a damaged box most of the time.

Hoping for in excess of £300, given macs hold their value so well.

Airport connections etc are already in the machine, and it's only a few £ to get one...

I say high, it's probably more medium considering I won't be doing anything like Aperature or Final Cut on it. It will be just internet surfing, gratuitous downloading and playing games like FM2007 and other mac compatible games.

Do they do refurbed Core 2 Duo yet?

There are some great offers there. I'm going to for 2GB of Ram, so will probably end up getting one from the Education store.

Can't wait - just two more paydays until I order it.

That's a Core Duo though, not a Core 2 Duo.

There are a few Core 2 Duo's on the refurb store - that particular one was the one Nidge bought.

You don't get the education discount through the refurb store AFIK though.

But genuinely, the machines from refurb are either new, or demo models. I've bought 2 ipods, a mac book and an imac from them recently, and all have appeared brand new, and just been reboxed.

The macbooks with over 1/3 off are outstanding value.

You still get the complete full warranty with them as well.

You're right, you don't get the education discount through the refurb store. It is one or the other. But because I want 2gb of RAM, and none of the refurb's come with that, I will have to go through the education store.

The education discounts are pretty good too - if at uni, you can save about £140 on a macbook, with 2ghz Core 2 Duo and 2gb of ram then the rest as standard.

Fuck that. Get the bigger discount on the refurb and fit some crucial ram yourself.

For a tech spastic like me, isn't fitting ram to a laptop difficult? And how much would the 1gb of ram set me back? Could be worth it if the saving on the refurb + 1gb ram is less then the education discount.

Surely you don't need to ask, apples do everything for you.

:lmao

Best question ever, in your face mac users.

It's all about learning surely, When you first start using Windows, you learn that by going to Start, presents the option to Turn Off / Shut Down. Once you have learnt to do this, then thats it. Its the same with Macs, only your replace the Start with the Apple logo top left. Once you learn to do this, then thats it as well.

Only difference is that Windows (without logic) requires you to go to a menu called Start. Well lets treat everyone as a basic human model, that intelligence and working IT skills are built upon. If I sat my Nan down to use either Machine, she still wouldn't know that you had to go to the Apple logo if I asked her to turn the machine off. But With Windows you have to go to Start. Helpful that, I want to turn off the machine, but I have to go to Start. Surely that would be confusing. Start.....but I want to turn off..... Wouldn't Start instantly put you off going to access that menu in the first place? I dunno, maybe.....

My point is that Start on Windows does no way imply that that is the best way to navigate to an option to turn off the machine. In fact it is more of a deterant.

IF Windows had a button that said Off, like Start, but on the opposite side of the Windows toolbar then yes, that would make it far superior to OSX in terms of navigation. But knowing Microsoft, it would require that you install some ancient HP LaserJet 4040 from 1991 that came with a non existant CD in your start up pack, before you can do so, before cra-_S__SSSS-**H@??øHH¬hhinggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg [Dumping Physical Drive: C....]
