Certainly a very modern midfielder. Even with the celebrated great teams of the past, the players still seem somewhat laboured in their movement. Bobby Charlton, whenever the team he was in allowed it, was very much a give and go player. One touch then move to the next player that he'd already picked out even before receiving the ball, and move into space to get the ball back either with the next pass or later in the move.

The greatest English player ever?

Probably. I think being in the very rare group to win a World Cup, and being the best player in that team probably sets him apart.

Very sad news.

I watched him play, and score the equalizer, in my first ever game at Anfield in 1971.

RIP Bobby.

The greatest English player ever?
I think that's hard to argue against that. Best player on England's World Cup winners, captain of a European Cup winning side and winner of the Ballon d'Or. A two footed thunderbolt and an absolute gentleman of the game.

Without being too morbid there can’t be too many of the 66 squad still around now can there? Apparently Geoff Hurst is now the last surviving member of the starting eleven. Obviously Ian Callaghan still with us.

RIP our Bobby!

Probably the very first footballs name I was ever aware of age 3 or 4. I was born in 65 and my family moved to the Newcastle area a few months later. My younger brother was born in Ashington in 68 where the Charltons and Jackie Milburn came from (and Michael Oliver but that’s a different story).

Parents had zero interest in football but coming off the back of 66 and then the European cup in 68 and being in the heart of Charlton country at the time, he would have been the most famous person around. And rightly so too because he is truly one of the greatest English players. Hell of a player really and given what happened in Munich an absolutely remarkable story.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain

First time I saw him play live was the ‘67 charity shield v Spurs. He scored two amazing long range goals that day at my end. Pat Jennings, no less, could do nothing about either. The second was on MOTD credits for years. Feel privileged to seen such a unique, all time great in the flesh.
