Darren Fletcher Retires From Football !!
« on: May 1, 2012, 12:08:46 am »
All over twitter ( I know ) that he has been forced to retire. Source is Fourth Official who tends to be reliable. Sad if true, guess Man Utd need a CM even more now .

Gotta feel for the guy, to be honest. It's a shame to see any person's career ended by injury or illness like this.

Feel for him, never a good thing seeing someone's career cut short due to illness or injury, nonetheless, his health is the top priority and if him retiring means it is better for his health then so be it.

Good luck Darren.

He hasn't been playing this season due to health problems so I'm putting two and two together that that's the reason he's retiring. Sad really as he's a good player and seems a good professional too.

Desperately sad to hear this, was a top big game player on form and first name on the team sheet for the big nights. We missed him in those two CL finals against Barca, not like he would've made the difference like but it wouldn't of been quite the domination it was. And we definitely missed an in form Fletcher tonight. To be honest I thought the minute he revealed his illness and I read up on it that he would never play again, so it doesn't come as a big surprise to me. Goodbye Fletch.

My girlfriend's sister has what he has, so I'm not surprised if it's true he's been forced to retire. If he is on the types of drugs she is on, there's no way he could play top flight professional football at that sort of level and have any sort of endurance, fitness and not to mention passing the drug tests. It's a horrible, lifelong debilitating condition that I wouldn't wish on anybody that changes your entire life. Hope he ends up being able to carve out a successful career in retirement.

Hope it's not true but if so I'm sure he will have a future in coaching.

Very good player who was badly treated by his own supporters when they were looking for a scapegoat.

Delighted he made them eat their words and had a great couple of seasons before his illness.

Darren Fletcher retires from football?

By Matt Law, Reporter
Filed: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 00:31 UK

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has reportedly retired from football due to health reasons.

The 28-year-old has not featured for the club since November after it was revealed that he had been suffering from ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition.

He subsequently took over as a coach at the club, with the intent of returning to action at the beginning of next season.

No official confirmation has been made in terms of the Scottish international's future, but rumours have been circling on Twitter since United's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Monday evening.

Fletcher has appeared 302 times for the club.

As has already been said.  I have no affinity to anything yernited, but you have to feel sorry for any professional who has to retire early through injury or illness.

Except he wasn't a defensive midfielder. He was a box to box midfielder that did all the leg work in midfield and supported the attack.

He was as close to a DM as United had. He defended more than he attacked in my opinion.

My thoughts exactly. As much as I can't abide United, he's a cracking player and a lot of what he did in their midfield accounted for them winning a few titles. My best wishes to him.

Very sad if true, the guy was living the dream most of us had when we were young (being a footballer not playing for that shower).

Kinda like the whole 'loved and lost' thing. Definitely a big loss for Utd and the Scots.

True forgot about Hargreaves but then again he was never as active as Fletcher was. I still think Fletcher is their best midfielder for breaking up the opposition play and providing cover for the defence. Not a pure DM but like I said, I think his defensive work was more valuable than his contribution going forward. Had a pass on him though.
