Some of the breweries doing really good stuff. With the on trade a non starter, they are adapting their ranges and doing all sorts of different sized, kegs, polypins and bottles.

We're in the Midlands, Hobsons will do free delivery to a 20 mile or so radius. £25 for an 18 pint pin. Less than £1.40 a pint delivered to the door. They've also teamed up with a local cider maker, and doing 12 bottles for £23.

That’s a good price. I used to like a pint of Hobsons whenever I visited a mate in the midlands (or ‘the migluns’ as he pronounced it).

Yes its a great price. I like Hobsons. My favourite locally is Wye Valley, but they are doing 5 litre mini kegs for £28 which makes it almost pub prices, for a worse product, with none of the overheads of a pub. So they can fuck off. Greedy bastards.

My favourite beer right now is a Swedish lager called Arboga. It's a little bit darker yellow than your average lager and it's packing quite a lot of taste. It's 5,6 %. There's also a dark lager one and that's bloody marvellous too.

Anyone on here got one of those Subs you put torps into? looks interesting ,just wondered if it was worth it?

This is an old post but I'm thinking of getting one of these. I tasted Moretti from one of these a few weeks ago and to my mind it was the nicest beer I've ever drank outside a pub and in fact if was getting it inside a pub it would be better than most beers - fantastic. I didn't see the label to confirm it was "proper" Moretti as opposed to that brewed in Edinburgh but it tasted so good I have little doubt.

The only concerns I would have:
Right now they are struggling to keep enough torps in stock (probably because of the lockdown)
It's not cheap. Probably works out at £2.50 a pint - which is still OK compared to pubs and the better 500ml bottles of good stuff
There is a decent choice, but it is still limited and unlikely to grow much more

I'm tempted to sign up to a beer club and Beer52 seem to be the most popular. My only concern are the tins - I normally don't like drinking out of tins. If you poor their beers into glasses, does it still taste OK?

Aside from that - I've been catching up on this thread over the last few days and made myself a shortlist of stuff to look out for (some of which is probably unrealistic to find but still). Can anyone recommend anything else, or is there stuff here that shouldn't be?

Becks
Grolsch
Staropramen
Erdinger
Paulanar
Warsteiner
Hoegaarden
Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen
Bier Blanche de Namur
Samual Adams Boston Larger
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Leffe Blonde
Goose Island
Duvel
Punk IPA
Pilsner Urquell
Grimbergen Blonde
Westvleteren
Modelo
Titanic Plum Porter
Affligem

LIDL have a couple of German wheat beers in stock frequently - Patronus and Franzikanar - and they taste very good to me.

Cans are actually better for the quality of the beer and a large amount of the craft beer sector don't use bottles at all - glass allows light to the beer which isn't great.

Beer 52 are fine depending on the month - always a few good discount codes around to get your first box cheap!

I think they work out enviromentally friendlier as well, with lower CO2 emisions from shipping due to less weight.

Personally I find they taste fine when poured into a glass.

Beer52 is dominated by IPAs in my experience (and stouts and porters if you go for the standard subscription. I've not seen many pilsners, or wheat beers from them, which going by your list seems to be your favourites.

Amazon Prime Now are doing same day deliveries and have some pretty good deals on.

I've been on the Estrella, Peroni, Modelo and Moretti over the lockdown.

Got to admit, its oddly satisfying having a beer with your sarnies whilst working from home.

Anyone in here know the beers from https://goodthingsbrewing.co/ ?

I really like their approach on sustainability etc but they're not available in Denmark where I live so I wanted to know if anyone in here knows anything about the quality in general and their approach on hops (is it crazy beer like Omnipollo or...?)

Cheers!  :hally

I've got one but haven't used it for ages, put it back in the kitchen last week and haven't been able to order a single sub since.
The selection is pretty decent, and has really expanded from when I first got mine, 2 or 3 christmases ago I think.

Not sure why you say it's unlikely to grow much more but I do know they have specialist beers that come in and out fairly regularly although they're expensive. £15+ per torp

For anyone based in Liverpool shin digger are doing 3hr deliveries Wed-Sat. Got one of each on Saturday and every single one was boss.

They do have a decent choice for sure, but since reading this thread I have started trying many other (mainly German wheat) beers such as Franzikanar, Paulanar, Erdinger - they are all lovely and IMO unlikely to appear for the Sub.

I've been checking their stock levels, and it is really hard to buy torps at the minute. I guess that's a good sign that they are selling so much to be in this game for the long haul.

Ordered three mini kegs (5l) from a local craft brewery, Wiper And True.  Placed my order at 11.45am this morning, email confirmation told me it'd be delivered tomorrow.  Got a phone call at 1pm to ask if I was in as they could deliver today, arrived at 2pm and I've cracked into already.  Lovely stuff and not too pricey, paid £90 for the three kegs, less than £4 a pint.

I tried the following in recent days, listed for me in ascending order of quality:

Brewdog IPA - the first IPA I have drank. I appreciate the different smell, texture and flavour but I don't think it's for me. I don't know if this is a particularly renowned IPA or if I should try others (Punk IPA I have seen recommended)
Pilsner Urquell - this reminded me a bit of Harp but nicer. Quite a strong taste, feels a bit "cheap", but I'd still rather have that than tasteless piss like Sol, Miller or Bud
Leffe Blonde - very nice, and actually when poured is probably the nicest-looking beer I have seen - textbook colour and head
Paulanar - highly rated German wheat beer. To me it just needs a slightly stronger flavour but it is very smooth. It does seem to fill me (with wind) more than even other wheat beers such as Franzikanar or Erdinger which keeps it from being more drinkable for me
Duvel - this was fantastic. I just wish it wasn't 8.5-fucking-% because 3-4 of these and I would be on my back. But really, really nice.

Probably would still say the Moretti Siciliana or Tuscana are the nicest bottled beers I have drank (NOT the stuff brewed in Edinburgh by Heinken). I don't know if these are categorized as wheat beers but there is a similarity with some of the German ones I have tried recently.

Working in Salford and have found this little place in Prestwich. www.kegcaskbottle.co.uk.

Good selection of bottles, and have had a couple of the cask real ales in the growler fills. Also do a very good Dutch pilsner called Lindeboom.

Worth a look and good value for money.

Brewdogs alcohol free beers were game changers for me.... and I'm not a fan of Brewdog at all. The only alcohol free beers that acutally taste decent and don't have that weird taste all others I have tried have.

I'm assuming the cans are just the regular Erdinger Weißbier that is usually in a cream coloured can. If you like darker beers, the dunkel (chocolate brown coloured label) might be one to try. Erdinger is great stuff

  • Let me tell you a story.........
Very much into lagers and Pales at the moment (well it is summer I suppose!)

I am loving Augustiner Helles, definitely my favourite lager at the moment, although anoyingly I haven't seen it under £3 a bottle anywhere.

On the pales side of things, for a 3.8% Pale I think Verdant's - People, Money, Space, Time - is remarkably full flavoured

For a stronger pale, I am really liking DEYA's Steady Rolling Man, probably the best "core range" pale I have tried from one of the craft brewers
