On the name, not entirely sure, you could be right that he might have just named it that on a whim, though it's possible that he invented it to reflect a typical style of ship that plied its trade between the French Ports and Liverpool. It must have happened, our waters used to have simply thousands of small ships along those lines doing small jobs, transfering all sorts of odds and sods around the UK by the most economic route before Rail and Steam took over, and beyond to Europe.
