As long as the peace isn't disturbed and there's no nuisance caused, is that necessarily a problem? Recreational space for recreation, no?
No, not really.

There can be a very thin line though, between revelment and over exuberance, and annoying the locals.

Bit concerned about the Council's recent attitude to the park...they appear to think that because of its enduring popularity it needs to be exploited and used as some sort of revenue raising urban green space........It's survived for 140 years as the best park in Liverpool without regular large scale events, houses being built on it or an alcohol licence..and with free parking....keep yer grasping, here-today-gone-tomorrow tinpot fuckin councillor hands off it...c*nts

If it's a licenced park, is that just for special events, or whats to stop anyone rolling up with a few crates and a dozen mates and getting pissed in the park, just as long as they're not disturbing the peace?

You can do that already?

I live on the Aigburth Vale side of Sevvie Park. I dont see how the surrounding roads could facilitate the parking for such large events. The roads are chokka just for the fireworks display.

No many areas anywhere can facilitate an influx of 40,000 people mate. For a major event there would have to be additional public transport plans I guess.

For an event that size I would expect all the adjacent roads to be no parking and a park and ride scheme to be in place

Council are being snide c*nts on the Meadows. They argue that they are unused whereas in reality in previous years they have been used for games, army fitness, and just people sitting out and chilling. This year in an attempt to prove their disingenuous lie they have left them both unmown so that they cannot be used.

It's a snide trick. For the council the argument that some green space next to a large block of green space is a sacrifice we need to make in order to keep libraries or social care is a winnable one without resorting to underhand deceit.

If I was the campaign group trying to save the meadows then I would be getting some scythes in and advertising a community mow-down. Cut the grass. Use the meadows as they have been in the past.

There two points for you to ponder though Kev.
1. The 'meadows' is hardly used, I lived in Aigburth for 25 years and I drive past there to my mums very, very frequently. There may be a strong argument not to build on greenspace but lets not kid ourselves they are well used peices of land. They never have been at all.

2. Look at the rest of the park - its scandalously overgrown, its not being snide, its about the reduction in the grass cutting schedule. Although its not a reduction its practically a cessation. There are two fields on the actual park where we use to play 7 or 11 aside footy every week which are now a foot high in grass. Its fucking outrageous that the council are forced to review the schedule due to government cuts.
So the meadows, which incidentally we never played footy on ever, is suffering the same neglect as the rest of the park due to severe cuts.

Diagree on both points John.

Those meadows are on my regular cycling route and in previous years there would be people using them most days - weather permitting.

Before I got to the meadows on Sat, now very aptly named, just about ready for someone to make hay, I walked across the rest of the park (had been at Oye) and it was all neatly trimmed.  So neatly in fact I wondered about trying to resurrect our impromptu summer cricket knockabouts.

As I say, the argument was winnable.  Stop hiding behind snide lies and deceit Joe.

Ah, so they've trimmed the park for the festival. Again I suggest it's undertaking the bare minimum as presentation for the event rather than purposely ignoring the 'meadows' mate.

Its like a massive sweep of the city centre ahead of the Matthew St Festival, etc.

I promise I'm not just saying it now, but as long ago as 10 years I said that was a waste of land.

The thing I find most disappointing about the Meadows is that's it's being sold of for development whilst brownfield land large enough for a huge number of homes sits dormant at the top of Smithdown Road with few sign of lasting care and attention.  If there are no plans, at least getting rid of even just one of those tarmacced roads and sorting out the land would provide a huge open space in which children could play - instead, I expect there's plenty of rubble in there despite the grass growth.

I reckon three times the number of homes could be built at the top of Smithdown Road  - an awful lot cheaper for an awful lot more people and with the council taking in around the same amount of profit for land-sale but against a backdrop of support rather than protestation.  It's offensive that they're selling off cherished (arguments for and against, clearly) land whilst and upon which hundreds of homes once stood is simply laid to waste during times of a huge national housing-shortfall.

Its all part of a development deal mate. The objective is to balance quality homes with social housing and task the builders to come up with the solution to build on both types of land.

Exactly.

The last thing south liverpool needs is more fucking luxury apartments. Have you seen how many of the 'luxury apartments' around sefton park are already available for rent/to buy? Loads. The arse is falling out of the rental market in L18 L15 etc because so many people are buying up property to rent out.

I don't think its for flats mate but for houses. There is a strong argument that Liverpool needs quality homes for the business people of the future to live and invest. If there were more quality homes to buy house prices may fall and renting may be unnecessary.

I know there are properties empty, but long term the objective is to increase the city's population, growth is the only way we'll survive - a shrinking city mean less and less support from Government's that have little pity on us anyway.

So we need businesses and population increase.

But I'm not an economist and its not an argument I'm going to have.

I live just on the other side of the iron bridge from the meadows and from what i hear the objective of this land sale is to provide 4/5 private homes only, no apartments or small houses, with money raised further enhancing the parks offering, is there not talk of a permanent stage area being built for future gigs and outdoor events, if this pays for that you wont hear me complaining i'll be honest, but also totally understand the argument to leave as it is as long as maintenance costs are within reasonable budgets.

I go past every day VdM but only noticed today that the field at the very end of Elmswood Rd is still a foot high or more. Its very much about the massive cut backs.

Understandable that cutting the grass in the park isn't a priority when Childrens Centres are having to close down. If it makes a dent in the £100m+ cuts the council are having to take from central government, then I'd rather see a bit of long grass than most of the alternatives.

Joe Anderson tweeted saying that the money from the meadows sale was being used to resurface the roads around the park.So they resurface the roads, sell the meadows to build houses meaning the roads get ripped up to laying the pipes and cables or the new property.

Hardly. They wouldn't need to dig all the way round the park to get cables from the housing on the other side of the meadows to the meadows. Those roads were in a terrible state.

And there's no footpath at all at the bottom end of queens drive. If it's been raining, you actually need to walk in the road down there.

The grass in the uncut area's has been left purposely as it good for wildlife and give's the impression of being a meadow.

If it's the grass I think it'll be it also has a nice vanilla scent when cut for hay.

Is this the grass in this picture?

It's Sweet Vernal in the picture.

That's sensible and understanding of the plight the council faces due to Tory imposed cuts - £40m savings are to be found this year, another £40m next year and then approx £10m the year after.

It really is grim and will have profound affects on the city.

I've just been over to the Wirral and there are extensive parts of grass over there uncut. Councils have been shafted.

No house building on the Meadows site,

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has said for the first time that NO houses will be built on Sefton Park Meadows.

The city leader has conceded that the controversial site will not be earmarked for housing development - providing a different solution is brought forward.

It marks the end of a five-year battle by campaigners - including Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall - who strongly objected to plans to build executive homes on the green space close to Sefton Park.

Speaking on the Roger Phillips show on BBC Radio Merseyside today, the mayor responded to a call about Sefton Park Meadows with the shock announcement that it would no longer be planned for housing.

But he made it very clear that the land cannot remain unused - and suggested either an allotment or community garden as an alternative.

But he made it very clear that the land cannot remain unused - and suggested either an allotment or community garden as an alternative.

Great news about them not building houses. They need to sort out that road the runs through there. The little one that goes from the bridge and continues up the hill towards Palmerston Road. I come flying down the hill on my bike recently and hit a few potholes and nearly came off. Its dangerous.

Yep the road is especially poor there.

All the verges round there have been destroyed by people on the school run as well, looked like a clay pit when we went past earlier.
