I'm not certain but if you chance him NRNB you've not lost anything if they don't send him. I have read on Twitter that they are thinking of running him and if he's declared that price instantly halves at best. If Codd speaks about one like that you take notice. If he doesn't run and they save him for another day I'll go to war then ;D
Farouk D’Alene running in the bumper at Naas tomorrow I see. Guess we’ll probably know shortly after the race whether he goes to Cheltenham. Andy Dufresne also runs on the card.

Edit: sounds like the Mullins bumper horse is highly thought of as well so should be a good test for Farouk

Hard to know what to make of that. Farouk has battled back well to win but difficult to know what he’s beaten - looking at the little previous form, that could have been a pretty hot race.
Have to wait and see what Elliott says but Betfair Exchange suggests he’s probably not going for the Bumper.

Comments from Elliott yesterday,

Elliott did have one winner on the card in the shape of Farouk D'Alene in the bumper

"He's a raw horse and one for the future. He'll have an entry for Cheltenham, but it would have to come up soft for him to go," said Elliott.

"He's a fair horse and two and a half miles will be right up his street. Jamie [Codd] said he gave the rail away to let the other horse come through and give him something to go at. He straightened up when he had something to go at."

I’d say it’s odds on to be soft but I don’t think he’ll go. The races are probably too close together.

Un De Sceaux has been retired. Not many horses have his makeup. He won 10 grade 1s and even when he didn't win he gave you a spin for your money. Magnificent racehorse.

Just saw that. A brilliant horse. I don’t think he was always campaigned in the right races because of the Ricci horses but no doubt he achieved a lot anyway. A shame he doesn’t get the chance to bow out at Cheltenham

I think the Elliott/Codd combo might be on Queens Brook for the bumper. Just appeared in the betting, wasn’t anything for it before the last day or two. 12/1 best price currently

Just beware that the last Elliot horse who appeared out of nowhere was nearly as short as 8/1 and flopped on debut.

Ah no this ones already dotted up by 20 odd lengths for them a few weeks back, just didn’t look like it was going for the bumper until the last 24 hours. Think they may have decided to go with This instead of Farouk Dalene

While I doubt she’s as good as Fayonagh potentially was, she is a mare and gets the allowance so that could be handy too.

I think I'll leave the bumper alone now and maybe have a very small bet on the day. I love Farouk D'Alene and what he could become but hate the race as a rule. I also think the 2nd and 3rd in the Naas race could be very smart. I don't have loads of antepost fancies to be honest. I'm absolutely mad keen on Min now he'll be running the Ryanair and Copperhead in whatever race they go for, but aside from that not much.

I'll kick us off lads can't wait for the best week of the year and about to head down to Cheltenham!

14:10 - Rouge Vif - I think this years Arkle is made for an outsider. As much as I love the horses at the front of the market I can't be with any of them at the prices. Notebook is a lovely horse and has made into a fine chaser. But I can't get away from two things that happened at Leopardstown the last day. Firstly how he behaved in the preliminaries, Rachel Blackmore did an amazing job of regaining control of him after he bolted before the start, given the difference in crowd size and how on top of horses spctators are at Cheltenham I would be very worried how he will take it all in. Secondly he had a tendency to jump right, this is picky as it wasn't overly to the right but at the price he is I have to be picky. On the old course the gradient is far stronger than the new, jumping right at the wrong time on that course can all but end your chances. Cash Back is another horse I love, but given everything I have witten about Notebook he still couldn't beat him. Fakir D'Oudaries is the best jumper in the race, however, he lacks the scope of others and when push comes to shove and he needs a really big one I think he may get found out. Add to all these things that all these three like to front run and we could be in for a burn up up front. Of the Englsh contingent I'm struggling to see the support for Brewinupastorm. He's only had two runs over fences and hasn't been seen since mid November. His jumping wasn't Arkle worthy that day and although I'm sure he will have done plenty of schooling at home it's a big leap of faith to say it's up to standard now in race conditions. The one I keep landing on is Rouge Vif. He is by no mean a normal Arkle winner but this is by no means a normal Arkle. He had a quiet start over fences before being given a wind op and since then has run two mighty races. He was beaten in his first run after the op at Kempton by Global Citizen but I saw an interview with Harry Whittington in which he says he needed the first run to show him his wind was sorted. This lead to an electric performance at Warwick the last day (a track that is a great trial for Cheltenham) and he swatted Nube Negra to the side who is a nice yardstick. I think he's a cracking bet at 16/1.

2:50 - Mister Malarkey - I think this fella is on a massive upward curve. Physically he reminds me so much of Native River and he's starting to jump like him too. Things didn't go right for him at the start of the season and the yard seemed genuinely baffled as to why as they think a lot of him. The fact they were expecting him to win good Handicaps at Ascot speaks volumes. They freshened him up over Christmas and I thought he was excellent the last day at Kempton. If he jumps round Cheltenham like he did that day he will be there or thereabouts at the finish, the 14/1 currently available is a steal.

2:50 - Kildisart - Leads me very nicely to my second selection in the same race in Kildisart. Ben Pauling's yard were in awful awful form in the early part of the season leading to sub par runs from this fella. Since then I've suspected they will ready him for a crack at this. His race where he beat Mister Malarkey at Aintree last season was class from both of them (I was on Malarkey  ::)) and I've followed both horses since. He had a lovely prep for this the last day in the race won by Malarkey. Something I have noticed with him this season is he has been particularly slow through the air in his jumping. I was delighted to see cheekipieces applied and horses running in first time headgear in this race have a great record, 9/1 will do for me.

3:30 - Darasso - Bit of a punt here but this Champion Hurdle is woeful, I could make a case for half the field, but this fella shouldn't be 50/1. Mark Walsh on board for JP sprung a shock last season on Espoir D'allen and I think thi fella might surprise a few for Joseph in this.

4:50 - Hold The Note - Same connections won this with Mister Whittaker a couple of years back and I feel they have one primed to go very close again here. I absolutely loved his trial in the Towton the last day and he shaped as though 2.5 miles over Cheltenham would really suit. His strongest attribute for me is his jumping and that is what will win him the day here, a great bet at 8/1.

5:30 - Newtidem 10/1 & Ravenhill 6/1 - As always in this jockey selections narrow the field down for you and I've gone for two master in Codd & O'Neill. Ravenhill's jumping would worry me, but then Tiger Roll ploughed through half of these fences after doing so in the Kerry Nation just like Ravenhill, I backed him and that turned out ok  ;D the secomnd is Newtide. This he's overpriced here and glad he has a proper horseman on his back. Looked otpaced in the Towton but was tidy and careful over his fences which I like here. It was only his second chase and I think he will have learned a lot that day, I expect a big run here.

I've just spent an hour going through the card.

This is going to be a Mullins/Henderson carve up so i think the best angle is to back their fancied runners.

1:30

Mullins wants to get off to a good start and I think he will take the Supreme Novices with Asterion Forlonge. Mullins has won the race six times and this horse won a Grade 1 last time out in Ireland.  Townend booked.  I'll be backing this if it goes off Fav or 2nd Fav as long as it doesn't drift to over 9/2. I really think this one will get Mullins off to a good start.  I'm a little wary of Elliot's Abacadabras who won a Graded race in Ireland last time out and could be a danger so will cover my bet.

2:10

Henry De Bromhead runs Notebook in the Arkle. This horse is unbeaten over fences and is a dual Grade 1 winner in Ireland.  Trainer loves to have a winner at Chelt and it is fancied in the market.  I'll be backing this as long as it doesn't drift. Mullins once against has a great record in this race so i'll be having a few quid on Cash Back just in case but Notebook has already beaten it in Ireland.

3:30

Nicky Henderson has a great record in the Champion Hurdle and he runs Epatante (NAP) who won the Grade 1 Xmas hurdle last time out.  At this time she is fancied in the market at around 3/1 and JP McManus the owner loves to have a winner here so I can see a big run. Barry Geraghty booked and he is a big race jockey.  I really like this ones chances and I think the opposition is poor.

5:30

Willie Mullins has the favourite here Carefully Selected and it has to be respected. He's unbeaten over fences and Patrick is booked (very experienced jockey) this should end a good day for Mullins imo!

Conclusion

1:30: Asterion Forlonge 0.8 points win, 0.2 points win Abacadabras
2:10: Notebook 0.8 point win, 0.2 point win Cash Back
3:30: Epatante (NAP) 1 point win
5:30: Carefully Selected 1 point win

Double: 1 point Epatante & Carefully Selected (pays 10.5 on betfair at the moment).

That's 5 points staked. Not too bad. Hopefully I can have a few winners to go into day 2 with.

I have a betting bank and stake a point for each selection:

https://www.bettinggods.com/what-is-a-betting-bank-and-why-do-i-need-one/

It helps me control my betting so if I dont get any winners I can still play on day 2, 3, 4 etc.

I also watch the market on betfair closely.  If any of my selections drift over 9/2 i will be very wary to get involved.  At the time of writing the horses ive put up are fancied in the market (that could change).  I will update nearer the off.

Quite a bit of rain around at the minute. The ground is going to be soft and combined with the Cheltenham hill, the obvious thing to do is look for good stayers.

Excellent write ups. Always interested to hear others Points of view on their selections.

I use a mixture of trends and (my basic) form analysis to make my choices.

For tomorrow I’ve done the following

1.30 Asterion Forlonge, main bet. Plus. Fiddlerontheroof & Abercadabras. They all meet the majority of the key trends. Fiddlerontheroof should really appreciate the ground but might be more of a chaser and Abercadabras has the form but doesn’t seem particularly fancied. Settled on Asterion Forlonge as has won very well and can’t get away from Mullins always going close in the opener.

2.10 No bet for me. Nothing stands out enough for me.

2.50 Vinndication main bet. Also Kildisart. Vinndication looks a class above these on form, unsure why he hasn’t run since Nov but if laid out for this then should be hard to beat. Kildisart hasn’t been at his best this season but I’m hoping they’ve been trying to perhaps bring his mark down a little. On his best form at this weight he should be there or thereabouts. Both hit most of the key trends.

3.30 Cilaos Emery. I really thought he might get involved in the Champion Chase picture until his first fence fall saw them revert to hurdles. In an open year I think he might be being under rated at the price. I may do a little saver on the fav as she scores best on the trends.

4.10 Benie. Obviously Honeysuckle is the danger but this would have won easily last year if not falling at the last and it sounds like they think she’s a bit special. Not lumping on but likely to include with a few of the others in a multiple.

4.50 Espoir De Guye. Main bet. Also Precious Cargo. Both do well on trends and Venetia’s horse will love the ground, already missed the good prices though looks like it’s been well backed today. Precious Cargo seems a decent ew price.

5.30 Lord Du Mensil. This horse looks to have improved massively recently and is clearly well fancied for its local owner to go in here. The fav looks the class horse but isn’t without his jumping issues so at the prices I’ll go for the second fav.

Arrived in Bristol this evening where we’re staying all week. Been raining solidly since about 4pm. Don’t think Cheltenham was supposed to get as much as Bristol otherwise it could be very soft. Supposed to be mainly dry rest of week.

Have a great week all. Be lucky.

First day is dreadul in my opinion. The best race of the day is between 2 mares that should be contesting different races. First race is fairly deep, but the Arkle is shit, the Champion Hurdle is the worst renewal for moons and then you've got a couple of handicaps. A day for the smallest of small stakes.

Broadly agree with this assessment, definitely not a vintage start and ground that will be close to heavy. Just spent a couple of hours on the cards and have little that strikes me as a standout so far, apart from the obvious Benie. Espoir de guye as an solid e.w.

Good luck all

I'd rate Asterion Forlonge as the best Irish novice hurdler on form and time-figures, ahead of Envoi Allen via form-lines with the consistent Conflated, also slightly more tenuous form-lines through Mt Leinster and Entoucas.

Chantry House is bugging me, extremely talented but both races he's won this season have been ran at a total crawl, going to be a totally different race tomorrow. He's kept a lot up his sleeve, I wanted to back him but Asterion has it in the book.

I'd rate Sporting John as the best British novice hurdler, his comprehensive beating of Pipesmoker giving him 8lbs in an absolutely savage time over 10 seconds quicker than the handicap later on the card. Big call but I fancy him to beat Envoi Allen Wednesday.

Agree, bar the Champion Chase the rest of the week isn't much better.

I'll be cheering on Darver Star in the battle of the stooges at 100/1 so I can at least get somewhat excited by the Champion Hurdle.
