I don't think people realize how good he has been to our game in possession the last two games. Numerous occasions, both Spurs and Leicester tried to cut off all passing avenues from the centre backs. And, it was Matip's composure which meant, their press didn't yield any results. He just held on to the ball till a pass appeared, or if pressed hard could just dribble around the man and run forward. He is too good. I haven't felt this good watching a new signing who is not a attacker since 2004 when I watched Xabi for the first time. I know this is high praise, but that is how good his composure on the ball has been.
Another thing, he is so cultured as a footballer that even his clearances are like passes with the instep.
His defending has been good too, but he is far more than his defending. What Stones is to Guardiola, Matip is to us.
Fantastic, hope he keeps improving to greater things.
Hats off to Bill on his throne,
He set the club's standards in stone.
Navigating the storm,
Is the Liverpool norm,

Probably the most exciting prospect of this season, is the emergence of Matip.
(And Karius, tho still waiting to see him play)

If we can keep him fit and he can establish himself as a solid CB it will do us a world of good in whatever we end up chasing come the end of the season.

Bargain of the season when you see what some of the other cbs have cost.  Really odd how easily it was for us to pick him up as well but i'll take it.

He's obviously a very good defender. Mistakes will come inevitably, but it feels like nothing faces him. One of the players of the season is Ma-tip.  ;)

One thing I noticed about Matip which I liked was in the seconds after Lucas's brain fart against Leicester, Matip was straight over to him clapping and getting behind him. None of this swearing or screaming at him, or just walking away.

Its only a little thing, but a nice touch and showing leadership qualities in defence.

Kind of happened already, twice he lost a tussle for position with Alderweireld prior to corner kick.

Aye I remember that Hansen fella was a big, bulky defender.

Rolls Royce of a centre half we have here. If Mama could settle alongside him our passing out from the back would be brilliant.

Nice hyperbole there mate. Its for all to see that Matip is on a light side considering his height. He puts in a few kilograms and we have one scary monster in the heart of our defence. Lovren is no giant either so I think it would balance it out if Matip got stronger.

Hes a great defender. Not sure why people have to jump on a poster when there is a bit of "negativity" said about a player. Joel is not going to be bullied as it is. All I´m saying is bulking up would help him to dominate. Hitting a gym has certainly worked for Origi, nothing wrong with suggestion it would help Matip too.

Sami Hyypia - 193cm 88kg
Rio Ferdinand - 189cm 87kg

It literally means nothing how heavy you weigh so long as you're not a twig.

James Harden also wouldn't last 20minutes of top flight football..

Ah yes, Lovren, the player who got nudged off the ball by Harry Kane, who happens to weigh almost 2 stone lighter than him. Weight means everything does it?

Muscle and/or weight won't necessarily make him any stronger than he is now.

You can be 5ft 5in and weight 70kg and be stronger on the pitch than someone who is 6ft 5in and 110kg.

So you disagree with an idea that a tall fella looking slim would be better off with a bit of muscle/weight - especially in this hurly-burly nature of Premierleague?

I'm saying simply shoving more weight/muscle on him wouldn't mean he is any stronger and more able to handle the 'hurly-burly'. The thought is a myth, and a pretty old school way of thinking which is way outdated in modern fitness and conditioning.

It's more about knowing how to use your body, your balance, and your general core strength.

You are right Craig, Im an old fart and like a bit of a bruising from a big man. No idea about modern conditioning. Just thinking Origi who was so easily bullied off the ball puts on 10kg and looks so much better for it. This muscle gain never deteriorating his speed, balance or general way of play.

Yup, Suarez and Tevez are examples that come to mind, not super tall players but can shift their weight around enough to bully some of the strongest defenders.

Chopper is joking. I don't think he's said a serious thing for about 9 years.

Agger wasn't particularly bulky in the muscle department, didn't need to be. He was however very muscular. Wirey I think they call it.

The way he boxed out Vardy in the box, even got the kick and left him talking to himself, on Vardys bread and butter first and strongest to the ball trick no less, was pure class. He's the best defender in the league.
