I think the roof is like that so they can allow sunshine onto the grass.

Good point. Went on the Ajax arena tour last month and the tour guide said the pitch has been changed over 50 times in the last 3 or 4 years. The way the roof is (even when open!) it doesnt allow much light in and air cant circulate inside very well.
