Penalty takers anyone?

Milner, Salah, Fabinho, Virg all seem good bets to me.

Why even think of that?

Hope the lads are practising hard on them though.

So we shouldn't think about it, but we should be thinking about it?

Fans shouldn't but players should be practicing pens, free kicks and corners for sure.

Just makes me feel better that even if it does go to pens, we've got Salah (10 of 13, missed 2 in a game Egypt won 6-0), Milner 27 of 32 (2 misses in 10 years), Fabinho (19 of 20), and the most composed player on the planet.

I bet you wouldn't feel as confident if it went to pens!Lets just try and do it over 90 mins i don't think I could hack a penalty shoot out!

just thinking... most of the guys were likely on the beach since Wolves, and are now going back to the beach for training for 1 week, before heading to Madrid 2 days before the final.

I would much prefer that they were on the beach 1 week since Wolves and resuming training in Melwood. Less travel, less distractions, better familiarity with a set up that did us so well 2nd half of the season.

Can't we just let Milner take all five?

That said, we'll have Ox back... could we rope Gerrard back into the final?

I’m not sure about the less distractions part, bound to be far more if they stayed here.

I’m honestly not worried in the slightest about the preparation, they know what they’re doing. The last month or so has been super intense, a short break followed by a focused training getaway is probably exactly what they needed. Recharge and then refocus, and keep the boys together the whole time to maintain the focus albeit in a relaxing environment.

Wish the game was sooner though!

Fabinho was the penalty taker for Monaco, Salah does it for his country. They'll be fine.

I reckon for penalty takers:

1. Milner
2. Salah
3. Firmino
4. Trent
5. Fabinho

The players are back at Melwood this coming Monday and will be there until Thursday. Considering we go to Marbella frequently, it's not an unfamiliar environment.

Too much is read into the training camps.

Interesting choice putting VVD in there. I certainly think he has the temperament, but does he have the ability?

Agree with Gini, though I think he would be the 6th choice pen taker because it would be hard to deny Salah the chance to take one.

Milner, Salah, Firmino and Mane all on to take one I think
Gini would likely step up and do well too
Trent can hit a ball accurately so perhaps also from the penalty spot?
Think Fabinho and VVD would probably be ok as well
Shaq and Sturridge, if on the field, would probably be ok
Hendo has previously missed penalties in big games (England) before, and very uncertain about the likes of Robbo, Matip, Lovren, Gomez, Origi

I'd have
Firmino
Gini
Mane
Salah
Milner

Stuff all this talk about penalties. We're doing this in normal time, without panic, without scraping by, but in style.

I would think that we would want to keep our heads whether we're 4-0 up after 20 or still 0-0 after 120, and practising penalties is a good way of insuring that.

Nothing quite as emotionally satisfying as winning a trophy on penalties IMO, both in terms of the relief and elation of winning at the very last moment, and in terms of the crushing pain you inflict on the other team.

Hendo? What the fuck? When has he actually taken a penalty for us? He doesn't even take them as captain with Milner off the field. Salah has missed one or two but takes them regularly for Egypt and he's scored a few good ones for us as well. Henderson shouldn't even be on the list of takers unless it goes to the 8th or 9th penalty taker.

The wait is interminable isn`t it. So frustrating that is so late. The only positive I can see is that allows some players to recover from minor knocks and strains. I suppose it also allows Bobby the best possible chance of being fit.

Hopefully we are the team that bucks this trend of appearing in CL finals close together and losing both.....

Valencia - 2000 and 2001
United - 2009 and 2011
Bayern - 2010 and 2012
Atletico - 2014 and 2016
Juventus 2015 and 2017

More likely to pick someone at the start of Extra Time to adjust formation or replace a knackered player rather than based on penalty kicking ability, don't you think? Mind you, I can see logic in bringing on Milner with both his box to box energy and penalties in mind.

Didn't we more or less dominate Spurs early in the season - only a very late Lamela goal in injury time made the scoreline look more worrisome?

As for the second game - yes they played better after they made a switch in the second half and scored on a rolling free kick - then had some chances once we went all out attack. Fabinho was inserted late in to that game - but immediately the team looked sure of itself again. And while we won on a fluky play - again we were the aggressors.

The game at Anfield seems to have taken on a life of its own in terms of how it went (akin the Everton's performance at Anfield where Andre Gomes dominated us), particularly given the Sissoko chance towards the end. They were the better side for the second half up until they scored and then like you say, we were the aggressors. And even then, we had enough chances to score in the second half before the winner - Salah not passing to Mane, Van Dijk's free header six yards out - not to mention the first half where were dominant for the most part.

And yeah, we battered them at Wembley too.

They were wasteful in front of goal prior to that though, but that's because at the same time we were pushing to score the winner as we knew that we couldn't drop points.

We were wasteful in the first half because it should have been 2 or 3 nil at the half.

However they have enough quality to have a spell in the game where they will cause problems.

I hope we start aggressively like we have done against them in the past

We should target Lloris by flooding the box when one of our players takes shots. He loves to parry and his form from long range shots has been poor all season. Also Danny Rose and Trippier should get targeted neither has good positioning and I would like to see Robbo and Trent to play those balls along the line for Salah and Mane to run into behind their fullbacks. I don’t rate any of their fullbacks and I also hope Vertonghen and Alderweireld start as I think Vertonghen especially has lost a lot of agility in the last 18 months their most difficult defender is sanchez for me hopefully he doesn’t start. Fabinho needs to be careful as they have a lot of divers but I still want him to go hard on Alli and Son. We can and should do it. I just want the game to be played ASAP the wait is killing me.
