He's been brilliant so far.

Amazing coup getting him on a Bosman.

Hyppia was a great player, Matip, is going to be a lot better as he has a higher level of attributes. Will be superior and I love Sami.

A good game tonight but a lot better than Sami? Calm down.

Looks to be a great defedner but better than Hyypia - behave!! Certainly not yet......

Not saying yet but he will be, he's got everything in the locker, your first 3 games after missing preseason and up against Kane, Vardy and Costa, made 1 mistake but otherwise awesome, have you ever seen a defender deal with them so comfortably. Second game , picks up most experienced player after mistake,  passing, heading, organising, lack of midfield cover, and 2 different partners in 3 games.  I don't think people see what I see and I respect them completely, love others opinions and main thing is we won.

Never sure how to assess a defender whose had a really good game but also dropped a rickett
What on earth he's doing going to ground on their goal is beyond me - bizarre. He's got to be calmer in those moments.

However when the game was in front of him he looked boss.
Ton of potential

Looked to me like he was expecting Matic to hit a first time cross along the 6 yard box and he was trying to block it. Misread the situation sadly.

Football is such a harsh game. Matip made a gazilion right decisions tonight but one wrong one and it`s a goal. Nonetheless I couldn`t possibly be more encouraged by his performances so far. Please keep it up Joel.

That run he made into the box was quality. It's one thing running forward with the ball and dropping the shoulder. It's a whole other breaking the lines and receiving a through ball when you have Mané and Clyne in that area.

Be looks brilliant and brings a calmness to the backline

What a free signing. Wouldnt be too harsh on him for the goal, the last thing anyone expected from matic there was him hanging onto it before cutting back

I really liked the bit before that where, thanks to his skill on the ball, he helped the midfielders to retain possession. Our ability to retain and recycle possession quickly has improved markedly this season with the addition of Matip and the new midfield setup.

Reminds me of Agger, a player I absolutely loved. Bit more aggressive than him, and hopefully nowhere near as injury prone!

Looked to me like he was expecting Matic to hit a first time cross along the 6 yard box and he was trying to block it. Misread the situation sadly.

Maybe, but then perhaps if he stays on his feet, Matic does exactly that. Probably made the wrong call, but sometimes there's no right thing to do. Matic was already behind the defence, thanks to the fact three of our lads were ball watching and Ivanovic was able to slip him in. That's where the real damage was done.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4cFRJSb7Vs

Watch Henderson here. He looks directly at Matic and then to Ivanovic, and despite the fact both Clyne and Mane are closer to Ivanovic, he goes towards him, rather than tracking Matic's run. That's a worse error for me, (although Henderson was one of our best players on the pitch, this stuff happens in the course of a game.)

So far he's easily on par with John Stone as a ball playing defender. Apart from a sliding tackle in the penalty box, everything else he did last night was excellent.

Looks like he could become a mammoth player for us. Let's not forget about how good Ragner Klavan has been too. Matip and Klavan for a combined fee of 4.2m. That's just unreal value for money.

Can't lay the blame solely on him for the goal, think lallana misses tracking their player and fell? And then Henderson seemed to miss tracking their players around him and only looked at the ball.

But Matip overall was great.

If he defends like he did last night bar the admittedly big mistake, and he brings the ball out like he did AND bangs a few headed goals in we could be onto something big, id love it if him an lovren formed a proper partnership we wouldnt have to be watertight just very competant and as i say we could be dreaming again.

He's a proper leader as well, wouldn't be surprised if he wears the armband in the future if Hendo/Milner aren't fit.

There was a moment after about 43 minutes where Mignolet was trying to make a quick throw out for a counter and Matip told him no, just calm it down. Can only assume because he realised we were close to HT. Always gets people's chins up after conceding as well.

Beast.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.
