Hart hopeful on Finnan
Pompey close on Irish full-back

Portsmouth boss Paul Hart has admitted to holding an interest in Espanyol full-back Steve Finnan.

The Republic of Ireland international is reported to be negotiating his release from the Primera Liga outfit, after spending less than 12 months in Spain.

His possible availability has drawn attention from a number of clubs in England, where Finnan has previously taken in spells with Birmingham, Notts County, Fulham and Liverpool.

It appears that Portsmouth are leading the race for his signature, with Hart optimistic about landing the experienced full-back.

"We are interested in Finnan and are hoping something can happen on that one soon," the Pompey boss told The News.

"There are a few things need clearing up. That's all I want to say right now."

Meanwhile, Hart has also confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding a new contract for centre-half Sylvain Distin.

The Frenchman has been strongly linked with summer exit from Fratton Park, but Pompey are reluctant to part with the former Manchester City man.

"With Sylvain, talks are being held and I definitely want to keep him here," added Hart.

Finnan set for Espanyol exit
Talks ongoing to cancel former Liverpool full-back's deal

Espanyol are in talks to cancel the contract of Steve Finnan, with the full-back tipped to return to the Premier League.

Finnan only joined the Spanish side from Liverpool last summer, but struggled with injuries during his debut season in La Liga.

He was close to a move to Hull City during the January transfer window and is now being lined up for a move back to England.

The defender has been linked with Portsmouth, Stoke City, Sunderland and new boys Wolves as he prepares to leave Espanyol.

The club's sporting director Ramon Planas has confirmed discussions are ongoing regarding a deal to tear up the final 12 months of Finnan's deal.

"We are negotiating to cancel his contract," Planas told the Spanish media.

"Hopefully we can reach an agreement which works for everybody."

Yeah i remember - glad he didn't go there. Fin deserves to play for a bigger club than that. Kinda hope he stays at Espanyol for another year. We play them next week!

I'd love the lad to get back where he belongs to (I mean the premier league).

Still got a lot of time for Steve Finnan and suspect he can still cut the mustard at PL level. Whether that's at Portsmouth or any other potential struggler is another matter.....

Top lad, would take him back as backup in a flash, could cover both right and left side. Injuries would be an issue though.

I reckon he can still play first team at a decent level though.

Thats what I mean mate, the options would be:

1st - Johnson
2nd - Arbeloa
3rd - Darby
4th - Finnan
5th - Degen

Think he could be a great option for us and he could also possibly take up a coaching role later on like Sami is rumoured to be taking in 2 years time.

Top man, appreciate what he did but like Luis Garcia his days at the very top are over and any suggestions of a return to Liverpool just can't be taken seriously. Surprised Villa aren't in for him though.

At this precise moment in time who would you trust more Degen or Finnan to come in and do a job if need be?

If Arby left, then Id love to see him back as back up to Johnson, it would also enable the young lads an opportunity that they wouldnt really have if we signed a young promising RB.

Finnan. But that's irrelevant.

If Arbeloa stays I trust Degen will not have to be used.

Anyway Finnan will want to play week in week out now that he's just gone through a season of stop start, once he's fit he doesn't want to be waiting for Johnson or Arbeloa to get injured, he's better off with someone midtable where he can play regular.

Seen as Finnan's played about as much football as Degen in the past year - Neither.

Rafa worked a minor miracle getting rid (and getting something for him) when he did.

I voted no.

Loved Finnan, along with Carra he was our most consistent player between 05 and 07 without a doubt - and by that I mean consistently solid and good.

But wouldn't want him back. If we had to get another RB in I'd rather get someone younger or maybe even stick with Degen and Darby and give them a few chances.

I'd have him over Degen, but we need better quality back-up ie Arbeloa.

Finnan agrees Pompey move
Full-back set for one-year deal at Fratton Park

Sky Sports News understands Steve Finnan has agreed to join Portsmouth on a one-year deal and that the defender has passed a medical.

The full-back was released by Espanyol on Monday following an unsuccessful season in Spain and it was reported he was keen on a return to the Premier League.

Former Fulham and Liverpool full-back Finnan only moved to Espanyol last September, but he failed to settle with the Primera Liga club.

Pompey boss Paul Hart, who is also understood to have bid for Cardiff's Ross McCormack, has made no secret of his interest in the 33-year-old and is now on the verge of completing a deal.

The Fratton Park manager will hope to secure Finnan's move before Pompey fly to Portugal on Wednesday as part of their pre-season training.

Stephen John "Steve" Finnan (born 24 April 1976 in Limerick, Ireland)[1] is a retired Irish international footballer who played as a right back. He is the only player to have played in the World Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Intertoto Cup, all four levels of the English league football and the Football Conference.[2]

Completely disagree.  Johnson the past couple of years is on another level to what Finnan was, he offers so much more to the team.

A few years ago most would have agreed maybe but not "easily". Johnson the past couple of years has been brilliant.  Finnan would have been a very good back up for Johnson though.  Finnan was a solid defender but Johnson is on another level.
