Midfielder, clearly. Can't hope to emulate Gerrard but mustn't have the potentially to be a disgrace to the shirt.

Can? Had the number of one legend, might he get another, more appropriate to his position? Other candidates?

Always remember Gerrard more in the number 17, probably better leaving it a year to rest, like we did with 7,  so the new number eight does not get a ton of pressure and someone earns that number.
No time for caution.

I'd like to think that he would ask for it, be some statement of intent from him.

Maybe leave it a season, and then give it to whoever is looking best out of Can and Hendo, or a marquee centre-mid signing if that ever ends up happening.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was Hendo. He picked #4 for England after Stevie retired.

Can = #6
Milner = #7
Hendo = #8
Some striker = #9
Sterling(if he stays) = #11

 :)

Can. He's probably the guy after Milner who  doesn't give a toss who wore the shirt in the past.

Just about to say this.

He strikes me as the kind of guy that doesn't give a shit what's on the back of his shirt as long as he gets to wear it every week.

Some legendary squad numbers available right now. Think I'm right in saying 2, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 11 are all either available or likely soon will be.

Don't know who'll get what, would like to see Milner get 7. Leave 8 for a season, it's too soon, I'm not ready.
It's hard enough remembering my opinions without remembering my reasons for them.

Yup...

The one that sticks in my mind most is West Ham retired Bobby Moore's #6 after he died.

No one.

Until someone is fit enough to wear it. There is no one in the current squad that can wear it. Henderson has his own number.

I'm in the camp of believing that players have to be good enough to wear iconic numbers. The fact that we gave Aspas and Lambert the 9, which has been worn by legends, is atrocious enough.

I didn't agree with Can taking the 23 either.

Whoever we sign will have pressure, any midfielder will be compared against previous Liverpool icons and the same for every other position, so if you are coming to Liverpool you might as well ask for the best number, if you don't then you probably don't have the self confidence to be a success here anyway, out of the numerous players who could come here I think Kovacic is the best candidate for the 8-

If you are waiting for another Gerrard then you might be a while.

Not necessarily waiting for another Gerrard but someone good enough to wear it. Someone who will do justice to the number. For some people numbers or just that - numbers. But this is a number of one of our greatest players ever. Go anywhere in the world and mention 'Liverpool's number 8', and see how people respond. I don't want some muppet wearing it.

And if there isn't going to be anybody good enough for a number of years then fine, but just leave the number alone for a season or 2.
