It's utterly mad. There's new strands emerging as quickly as ends are tied up. It does explain an awful lot, too - but I find myself thinking "I'm going to have to rewatch the entire thing from S1E1.

Yeah I'm looking forward to a full rewatch at some point, we're so deep into the show yet it's still referencing things all the way back at the start.

My daughters have been watching it in subtitles as they are released in Japan, then re-watching them with me once the English dubbed version comes out.

After last night's episode, they took me back to watch something in season 2
Spoiler
and the Ymir (Jaws Titan) backstory
[close]
that made it make a lot more sense than first time around.

The world-building and huge story arcs are superb.
A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

Yeah I remembered enough of the broad strokes of that story, but it'll be good to go back and see the details again.

Watched the first episode of Dorohedoro, another show animated by MAPPA so of course it looks pretty amazing. Really good start to it, pretty violent from the outset and seems more on the "show rather than tell" side of things, which is unusual for an anime.

No love for One Piece ? the last few chapters are crazy.
Been following One Piece since I was a kid and I reached a point where I just want it to end. Anyhow looks like the live action will be great.

I've just caught up with AOT, only one episode left so I'm guessing they are going the movie route to finish it.

Nope.

They're doing a Season 4, part 3.

Starting next January, apparently.  :no

They announced some time ago that Season 4 would be the last, and as all the previous seasons had been split into 2 parts, everyone assumed before the start of season 4 that it would conclude the story. When it became clear that the story couldn't be squeezed into a 2-part season 4, the assumption was that they'd finish it with a film. But no, they're adding a third part to season 4.

Dunno

My kids are watching the subtitles (which finished last night); I'm watching the dub (5 weeks behind)

I haven't read the manga.

Sucks to have to wait so long for the final part now, but at the end of the day it means more episodes to enjoy.

Damn, must be frustrating for anime onlys but it's probably better off it being another season rather than movie.

generally think anime is too overplayed and obvious online but been watching Cowboy Bebop and that is seriously good watching

Love yer Ghost in the Shell. Grew up with Akira, love the cyberpunk aesthetic - would love to know what I've missed

some great selections there

different flavour ones i'd add

Death Note (especially 'first half' is fantastic)
Elfen Lied
Attack on Titan (can be brushed away as flavour of the year type thing but it really is something special, fucking nuts, but anime eh lol)
Tokyo Ghoul
Monster
Psycho-pass

most top tier for me

there are others i would recommend but shows were canned or ran out of manga (eg deadman wonderland, gutted that was only one season)

still haven't watched Grave of the fireflies, everyone i know who loves anime keeps telling me to watch it, i start it, but no, i can see where this is going, can do without that

And I've seen people asking about series with some good suggestions. And I'll throw some recent ones that are defo worth watching in

Demon slayer
My hero academia
Jujitsu kaisen

Still same as the poster above, none touch one piece for me.
Caught up a while ago and started rewatching and already back on episode 700 so won't be long and should catch up again. Hopefully by the time they've finished animating the current arc which has gone on for what seems like forever. For anyone who also reads the manga it will be a killer with the month long break now.

The power of simps for Makima alone is going to push this one to be the biggest anime of the season, nevermind the fact it is a great story with insane action.

Really excited about this one ngl

It is very likely the greatest thing I have ever experienced, and I don't say that lightly. It's definitely the most epic story I have ever come across.

The problem I have is that I take long breaks and then binge - right now I am catching up from around ep 840, and I'm up to 926 or so. I never come in this thread because I am scared to death of "One Piece" spoilers. I couldn't bear it.

what about good old Robotech?

That's what got me hooked on anime in the first place. It was really confusing though in the anime where they never went back to the Rick Hunter saga. The books - if I recall did so.

Am I right in thinking Gundam is similar to Final Fantasy where you can jump in at any time?

Sort of! There is one main timeline called the Universal Century (UC), and then everything else is an alternate universe that you can pick up whenever and watch condensed. Terminology carries over but thats about it. Black mages, Summons, someone called Cid, etc; Gundam has their own staples which carry over too.

UC shows tend to either have UC or a specific year in the title, but you can easily find a timeline list somewhere on Wikipedia for example. It spans decades so there's lots of delicious generational trauma to sink your teeth into.

The Witch from Mercury is an alternate universe show that has just started so now is the best time to start watching.

Really enjoyed the first episode of the new Bleach.

Spoiler
When they almost pulled that same old trick of ruining Ichigo at the start of a new season I was ready to immediately give up on it, glad he kept his abilities (unless the failed attempt has some knock on effect in the next episode) and hopefully the show maintains a high level as that's been the problem I've had with Bleach in the past.

I started with Gundam 00 when it came out and then tried the UC with the 0079 recap movies that are currently on Netflix. The sequel to that is called Zeta which is Empire Strikes Back levels of greatness and it really sank me into the UC stuff.

So yeah start with an AU and if you want more, you know what to try next.
