I think that one of the main problems now is a lack of songs due to lots of the players with the best songs leaving. I actually thought the atmosphere at the stoke game was much better than a lot of games last year though. Not that it was hard to better.

Agreed.  Swansea last year was sweet fucking agony.

There's plenty of songs. The alehouses are still full of them. But they don't catch on in the ground, because of all the problems that have been mentioned in here.

It's awful.  Was awful the other night against Udinese as soon as we went behind I thought.  I grew up in awe of the Kop, wondering if I'd ever have a chance to get there, but now I can it doesn't feel special at all.  It barely feels any different to any other stand.

Agree youth tickets need to be made available.  I'm restricted to cup games at the moment because I just can't afford it.  How is a 18 year old meant to afford £45-50 a ticket? It's fucking ridiculous.  I made it to the Arsenal game, £48, was in the main stand and it was dreadful.  To be honest, the only ones having a sing and a bit of passion were the OTT's next to me, not scousers.  Everyone else was sitting there just watching, didn't look arsed about anything else.  Then of course everyone moans and pisses off early when we're losing but that's not what it's about.  It's about singing even when we're losing.  We need to change it.

Isn't there a group doing this already, Reclaim The Kop?  We need to take a stand.  When they tell us to sit down, just stay standing.  Something, just change it.

It's been said before, but I reckon the 'singing section' is a massive problem.  It's good up there and given the choice that's where I go but the rest of the ground (even the rest of the Kop) just look to the 300s for all the songs.

I've been in the 200s a few times this season and there are literally people looking up at the singing section and not joining in.  We need people all over the ground to be involved, not just one section at the back of the Kop (where the sound doesn't carry anyway).

Geeeez, its as if its impossible to get an atmosphere going!

Absolute rubbish. I take my family to 4 or 5 games per year in the upper Anfield road end. The atmosphere reflects the performance - simple. When I took the family to the game when we beat Man U 3:1 (Kuyt hat-trick) it was electric. Same, the year before when we beat Chelsea (Torres x 2). The fact is that we havnt performed consistently well since the year before Rafa's last - seems as though the fans are waiting for a catalyst to spark the atmosphere when playing 'lesser' teams and sometimes it just doesnt happen.

The performances are coming - and so will the atmosphere.  How quick the 2005 semi atmosphere has been forgotten.

Yes, we are good enough.

If I could I'd honestly give up on football, but it's got a hold on me, well Liverpool have at least.

I used to watch every bit of football I could, from any league, but now I watch Liverpool only, I couldn't give a stuff about any other team or league,
it's too corporate, there's no (friendly) banter between fans, it's now, "what can we sing or do to wind up the other lot", and by "wind up", I meant, insult.

We are one of the few that sing about our own team, others come to Anfield and sing and chant in derogatory way about Liverpool, whatever floats their boat I suppose,
now the media, with their witch hunts and hatchet jobs, and how selective they are in who they go after, I'm just fed up with it all, and the over commercialisation of the game too, Sky have ruined it I'm afraid,
they can shove their 20 camera angles, they can, quite frankly stick their thinly veiled agendas up their arses too.

Football for me, in england anyway, died as a sport in 1992 when the FA let Murdoch in, and now he calls the tune.

This may sound bitter, resentful etc, but that's just how I feel, I've seen more punch ups in pubs now between rival supporters in the last 3 or 4 years than I ever have in all my time watching football,
fans of opposing clubs actually HATE one another now, friendly ribbing/banter is a thing of the past, every comment is now tinged with venom, and designed to aggravate the recipient.

I made a post on here yesterday about bringing my 5 year old to Anfield for the first time, but I often wonder what I'd be getting him involved in, as football (as someone also said on this forum yesterday) has become a horrible, nasty, spiteful "sport", but the alternative is, that if I don't get him involved in the club, he'll end up like his school friends, following that other lot, or the rent boys.

I apologise for this rant, but it's something that I've felt for a long time, the game is rotten, and it's going to take something extraordinary to clean it up, the FA and Sky need to go for a start, and maybe UEFA and FIFA, it only takes a few clubs to breakaway, then they can write their own cheques, free of Blatter, Murdoch and co.

Spot on that Flaccido.

I went to an old mate's birthday do on Saturday night. Full of people I've not seen in forever. One lad, who I've not seen for about 15 years, is a big City fan. When I last saw him, he was pretty sound, you could have a laugh with him, we had a shared hatred of United of course, and we could good-naturedly wind each other up about our teams.

Not any more it seems. From the first minute I saw him, it was "robbing Scousers" this, how Liverpool are fucking shite, how Rodgers is out of his depth, how the "fat Spanish waiter" ruined us and how much he loved watching us decline. No word about City's title win, or how they're enjoying Champions League football, he just wanted to take the piss and insult. I walked away from him in the end.

When the modern fan is like that, I guess it's no surprise that atmosphere at grounds is so bad.

This type of thread comes up every year. And there are some simple and great ideas that come out but always ending with 'the club wouldnt go for it'.

Has there actually been any dialogue or pressure put on the new owners for some kind of solution to this problem? We all know they're trying to sell us as a product around the world and surely the 'unique' atmosphere at Anfield is paramount to the package and of interest to them? Something drastic needs to happen, it's obvious there's enough passion about it just from this thread but it just seems to get lost in the ether with apathy after a while. It needs a high profile solution championed by people who have a real voice in the fan base.

Its not rubbish mate. And 2005 was 7 years ago. And was something of a one-off in itself anyway.

The answer is in bold for you. "Families" never really used to go [certainly not in the numbers you see now, with Supermum and Superdad carrying 8 bags of merch whilst trying to photograph the apples of their eye struggle with their Gerardburger and Curly Carragher fries].

That's why the atmosphere is shite. Its consumer/brand led bollocks now, not a football club.

The supporters, and the feelings and views of the supporters were always sacrosanct, and club directors and boards were always keen to keep them on board/happy, to club boards/directors nowadays they want supporters to come to the ground, pay for a ticket, spend in the club shop (or superstore as it is now) sit stoically for 90 minutes, walk out, and maybe spend another bit in the superstore.

That is their template for the modern supporter, a no frills person, that just gives them their money.

Now me, I prefer people like that are a bit more colourful, characters if you like, fella Pete that I used to see at Anfield, or that other fella at Portsmouth, some might view them as idiots, but I think every stadium needs a few characters, not rows of people that "shush" you if you dare to sing.

In the late 80's I went with my Mum, Dad and brother a few times, and just with my Dad and brother a lot. How else are you going to get the next generation going? I do agree that prices these days make that a lot more prohibitive though. I can barely afford to pay for myself to go at the moment, let alone consider taking my son in a few years time when he's old enough.

No-one said it was all their fault, but if you can't see that they form part of the overall problem then perhaps you should bang your head against that wall a bit harder.

Not sure how long you've been going the game mate, but trust me, when the atmosphere was good [and don't get me wrong, it was never brilliant every single week, but it was a damn site better than you'll ever find now] there were very few families on a day out, and even fewer tourists. Its not a coincidence.

Seriously? I'd take a few years in league one at this stage if it meant regaining what we used to and should still have.

I've said so much about this, it's painful - The only way it will stop is when the tourists fuck off. They're the ones who keep ticket prices high and destroy the atmosphere.

It was ever thus mate. Problem now is that instead of half the ground being quiet, miserable season ticket holders, and half being local scallies there to support their team, a large proportion of the non season ticket holders are now made up by tourists/corporate/families there for a day out.

Atmospheres are good for most teams no matter what game. I'd even go as far as saying that English football is the worst out of Spanish, French and German. The day trippers are such a small factor in this. I'm a season ticket holder in the Kop, I sit with fellas who have had season tickets for years and years and around me are fellas who have had season tickets for longer than them. They don't sing, they only sing when things are going our way and they spend half the game moaning and then leave early. When seasoned fans aren't interested then what can the OOTERs do?

This upsets me. I am 17 at the moment, it has always been my dream to travel to Anfield, stand on the Kop and sing my heart out with the rest of the fans. I've been unable to go to Anfield because my parents didn't have enough money for the travel costs.

But they said for my 18th birthday present that they will take me to Anfield to watch Liverpool play! That will be on January.
I know that I'm going to make the most of this chance, and sing my bloody heart out.

it seems to me the lack of atmosphere is normally when we are playing a lesser side or a game considered less important. Eg stoke on Sunday and Udinese last thursday. games vs united and everton i feel everyone is more up for it. unless we are playing shit on the pitch like we did vs arsenal then it goes shit again.

The atmosphere is shite all around Anfield most of the time lately.  Something to do with hardly winning a fookin home game.  The place is full of nervous tension.  Get a few wins together and the whole place will be far happier and noisier.  It's as simple as that.

Season Ticket Holder in 2011.  A 16 year wait for a top seat in CE6.

The gif of that guy shouting at Hodgson when we were losing 1-0 (I think it was West Brom) and Ngog was being subbed at around the 65th minute, sums up everything for me.

This guy shouts his heart off. Two blokes at the back just sit and point at him and chuckle.

The simple answer is the lack of standing where you then get to stand beside all your mates it was easier to start a sing song in the old days rather than 2 or 3 of you trying to get a song going and getting funny looks like you're some sort of weirdo.
Safe standing seriously needs to be looked at it doesn't have to be a slap in the face to anyone involved with Hillsborough, i go to watch my local team sometimes in the terracing and it's old school great banter even though the footy that takes place is pretty bad.
I agree about Germany anyone who watches that league can be nothing but be impressed by the fans if they can do the safe standing thing there why can't we?

The worst Liverpool game I ever went to, crowd-wise, was in the Upper Annie Road.

Was my birthday, we played Spurs, lost 0-2, Modric ran the show.

15 minutes after kick off, there was still an empty seat next to me. The fella turned up after 23 minutes, pissed, fell asleep in his seat, slept until 80 minutes, woke up, saw the score and left!

Unbelievable.

Spot on this Is to me the root cause of the problem

I don't think you can blame them, I'm 52 me self and really it shouldn't be the likes of us old eejits getting the atmosphere going, ( even though i do try) it's the younger supporters, the problem is where are they? How can they afford it? Let's face it the games up if we don't let the younger generation in. But as others have said, the club DO NOT CARE.
Bit depressing this thread, isn't it?
