Just think about how high our transfer budget will be now that we don't need to spend on air conditioning and laptops.....

The obvious place for him to go is Barcelona. Unknown to many they have a fantastic analytics department, they never use them, but we helped them set it up.
They need a director of football who can make them use that information and won’t buy shite.

It makes so much sense that there’s no chance of it happening ;D

Not great that, thought he'd be a mainstay at the club for years to come. Hope his successor can leave a similar mark on the club.

Disappointing that he'd consider leaving to be honest. By his own admission I believe he's a red. I imagine he'll have some idea about his next job, it must be pretty fucking good.

Imagine you’re in a job and 95% of suggestions to help the business are rejected and you see these suggestions implemented at other businesses and prosper. You’d be thinking “hmmm ok so we’ve had covid etc fair enough but i might aswell join a business that isn’t as badly hampered by covid” and looking at net spend since jan 19 thats pretty much any club in the league apart from us. Can you blame him?

I can’t see him at any of the state owned/oil clubs. I understand entirely why he would want a new challenge, it makes sense. Good luck to him, and the same to Julian Ward. It sounds as though he has a lot of good will around him. It’s  also good that everyone else appears to be staying. It gives us some stability going forward.

Fair play to him. He did a great job as far as I can tell (trophies). Liked that he stayed under the radar at all times and that he is into running long distances.

Congrats to Julian Ward.

Julian Ward will be fine.

It’s all about the collective and having a manager who works well with this system.

By the way - Borussia Dortmund are in a similar situation now, Michael Zorc is retiring at the end of this season, and Sebastien Kehl is taking over - he’s been learning on the job for a while now.

Crap news, was still hoping we would persuade him to stay. Of course, probably better that he goes at the end of this season than in 2023 or worse in 2024. This gives a chance for Julian to implement his ideas and develop himself whilst Jurgen is still around.

The framing of Edwards as a victim of the club’s transfer strategy, rather than its key architect, is fascinating to me. I’m sure he’d have liked to have a few extra bob to spend, but he more than anyone else is responsible for our approach over the last few years.

Incoming transfers is also just one part of his role. He wasn’t sitting around twiddling his thumbs in the
windows we didn’t sign anyone - he was overseeing the build of a new training facility, the analytics department, the academy, the loan players, among many many other responsibilities.

Anyway, change is good and we shouldn’t fear it. Remains to be seen how Ward pans out but it’s safe to say he’ll be well supported and will have the best possible environment to succeed. And, whisper it, but he could end up being even better than Edwards. Also important he has a couple of years to bed into the top job to ensure a smoother transition when Klopp does depart.

Wonder where he will go next, i’m sure he’ll have no shortage of job offers given the job he has done here. Seems we’ve known he was going for some time so no doubt we’ll have planned for his departure and hopefully Ward is a great successor

Totally at ease about this. The structure is now in place and functioning smoothly, and that's the most important thing; the new man has been trained up and all the other players on the footballing side of things are remaining in place. The next guy might be even better.

Good luck for the future to Michael and family. Completely understandable that he might want a new challenge after ten years.

We’ve been good at selling but I’m struggling to think of many loans that have raised a players value or been a roaring success. Maybe Awoniyi last year but it’s hardly ground breaking stuff we’ve been doing.

Harvey Elliott?

But really loans are pretty awful and random though and wouldn't really read to much in to anyone's ability as a sporting director based on them.

Ryan Kent
Harry Wilson
Marko Grujic
Ovie Ejaria
Harvey Elliott
Divock Origi (6M loan fee)

All been on loan and raised their value, brought in loan fees and/or got valuable experience.

There probably more. The above probably equates to >20M easily

Kent was a good loan. Wilson had a good loan that raised his value and then one that torpedoed it. Same with Grujic. Elliott’s was good. Origi’s fee was good but the loan a disaster and has actually probably made it more difficult to sell him because on the continent he did nothing really. Ward could be a great director, I’m just not going to give him a lot of credit when his ‘hit rate’ is really no better than almost any club that loans out players.

Best of luck to Edwards in his next role, hopefully he wasn’t as influential as he was made out to be by the club. I’m sure Ward will be fine, judging by our recent transfer windows he will have his feet up this summer with nothing to do ;D
