Maybe tweaking his role to offer some new challenges might keep him here.

If your Newcastle you would give Edwards a blank cheque and tell him to fill it in to be head of recruitment. The smart thing would be to pair Edwards with an emerging manager like Potter but the shithouses will probably be looking to splash the cash and go for the short cut with big names.

I really hope FSG can get Edwards to stay.

He is going to RB … so that Leipzig, Salzburg and all RB teams can officially be made our feeder clubs and we get first refusal to Nkunku, Szoboslai, Adeyemi, Aaronson, etc.

It’s not just one man though. Liverpool have a whole team working on research with the likes of Ian Graham (Director of Research) and Will Spearman (Lead Data Scientist) leading things. That team does all the work on the reports and analysis for recruitment (main remit) but also they’ve published papers and come up with tools for Klopp to have analysis in-game, for example, which helps him make decisions during the game and at HT.

Losing Edwards won’t change all that, and if he doesn’t want to be at the club, maybe it’s best to have a new Sporting Director who does want to be at the club and has ideas of his/her own. His (Edwards) most important work was getting the recruitment dept overhauled and overseeing the setup of the Research dept (which is now run by someone else anyway, who is a lifelong LFC Fan).

The club would probably prefer he doesn’t replicate our success at another club though, so I imagine they will still be trying to persuade him to stay.

As I said in the transfer thread I could certainly see why Edwards would want to move on.  If your job is to identify players for a system and grow then the future probably doesn't hold much promise as we seemingly, and hopefully rightly, are going to try to keep the majority of this group of players together as long as possible.  I think it was briefed when Klopp did his last extension that he would be leaving his successor a turned over squad so they weren't left in an almost impossible position.  That certainly doesn't seem to be the case now when you look at how the contracts are lining up with his contract.

Surely there's much more to his job then just bringing in new players.  And with the exception of the oil clubs, isn't what you described the same job at any other big club in the world?

He's the DoF not the CEO.  There's more to his job but almost the entirety of success or failure is based on the playing squad and what we devote a ton of resources to under his leadership to be good at identifying players for.

At Eddie Howe's press conference today, a journalist asked him whether Michael Edwards might join him at Newcastle - specifically, the journalist said he understood that Edwards' departure from us was going to be confirmed later today.

That sounds to me like it's been given to media under embargo (which this journo has then broken)... guess we'll find out in the next couple of hours.

EDIT: Now official. Leaving in the summer, Julian Ward to succeed him. Not going to Newcastle though.

Ah well, annoying but I'm sure Julian Ward is more than capable.

He's a shithouse if he does go to Newcastle though
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

I'm not sure that he'll just go and be a sporting director at another club. My feeling is he could end up doing something really different, maybe not even within football.
