Can people recall newer episodes that are up there with some of the old greats?

I must admit I'm struggling to think of any but even an old slugger can hit a home run once in a while

I'm fairly sure you're right.

I randomly saw an episode many years ago - maybe 10, which was a riff on The Godfather. Really decent episode which I thoroughly enjoyed.

But then I saw a few more episodes in the same season and they were unmitigated crap.

Problem is it's too much hard work to slog through all that bad TV to get to a few decent nuggets, when there's plenty of good TV elsewhere.

I agree, I sit through some of the newer episodes and there is the occasional moment which makes you raise a smile, but the rest of the episode is formulaic and just not funny.

Maybe its the quality levels  of the likes of Family Guy, South Park, Rick and Morty etc which are just making the likes of the Simpsons somewhat irrelevant.

You really can’t beat The Simpsons for binge watching on a hungover Sunday afternoon.  Last week they had the one when Skinner gets fired – Make way for Willie!!

Chalmers: You’re fired!
Skinner: I’m sorry, did you just call me a liar?
Chalmers: No, I said you’re fired.
Skinner: Oh…that’s much worse   ;D ;D

Hank Scorpio is definitely the best single episode character

‘Want some cream?’
There was a good thread on twitter last week about the best single episode character in The Simpsons.  It's worth a read and brought back some funny memories

Yeah saw that this morning. Sad times.

Going to be an ever increasing problem for them after retiring Hutz, McClure, Edna K etc. They really should wind the show up. Apparently the new episodes don’t really make any money but are only being produced to keep the show in the public consciousness for wider sales.

Bart's Friend Falls in Love on Sky One.

The entire "Fuzzy Bunny's Guide to You Know What" segment is a satire on adults not being frank with kids about sex and hiding it in euphemism.

Sky's censors, clearly missing the point entirely, cut out Mrs. Krabappel's "she's faking it" line.....

I have noticed a few clips taken out of episodes

The mr plow episode Homer panics when he totals his and marges car after driving home half pissed in the snow from Moe's

He fobs off saying he was at a porn store. When i last saw this that line was cut out, though mind you when i saw this as a child i do recall the awkwardness of asking my da what pornography was. So maybe its right thats not in it (for the record i was 25 at the time ;p)

Sadly I think some of them are the briefest of cuts to slim the running times for syndication in the US.

I reckon along with the drop in overall writing quality the other major thing that hampered the simpsons is the reduction of run time from when the show first started. I mean when you look back at a lot of the most quotable/memorable bits they seem to be non seqiitors and things that don't move the A story along, nowadays there's no time for those things to be added.

Watched the Lisa 'vegetarian' episode the other day with the cameo from Paul and Linda McCartney.

Didn't half crack me up at the end.

Paul: ''Lisa, before you go would you like to hear a song?''

Lisa: ''Wow! That'd be great!''

Paul: ''Ok, take it Apu''

Apu starts tapping on the bongo's and singing Sgt Peppers.
