2002 vs 2001 - LFC's performance
« on: April 25, 2002, 09:51:04 pm »
I am disappointed that we are four points back of Ar*enal with only three to play this season, but I believe that we have done better this year than last year in the league standings and points taken.  Can anyone provide such a comparison of standings and points for LFC from the same time last year?

Thanks!

Well, as you will see below, we are currently 5 points better off than we were last season (the third season in a row we have shown an increase). Note though that, of the 3 games left, we only got 3 points out of 9 from the respective games last season (we beat Coventry, replaced by Blackburn, and lost to Spurs & Ipswich)

For the record,

Arsenal are currently 8 points better off than last season with a tally of 4 further points from the respective games last season

The Mancs are currently 4 points worse off than last season but with 7 points further gained from last season's respective scores.

Newcastle are 4 points better off than last season with 3 further points projected.

So in summary all the top 4 sides are on course to beat last season's tallies but it's Arsenal who have improved the most which probably explains the likelihood of they becoming Champions.

There is a saying that if a team averages more than 2 points per game then they will probably be champions.

Our points tally so far is truly excellent - in many years it would be enough for the title. Unfortunately this year Arsenal just don't seem to want to drop any points.

But - remember - our key players are young and will improve further next year and Ged will strengthen the team in the summer, so if we improve as we have been (and should do) then the title's coming home sooner rather than later.

I think it is somewhat related to the closeness of the race.  When Blackburn pepped Scumchester back in 95 they are on (I believe) 88 points or 89 points and it goes to the last day of the season.

I think this year is going to be the same -- If Arsenal win the next 3 game they will be at 87 points which to me is good enough to win the EPL for any year.

Arsenal have already put together 10 wins in a row at the back end of the season. Cannot argue with that.

What if we had got an equaliser on 23.12.01? Things would be oh so different! Shit. I hate thinking about that game.

To be fair we looked jaded that game and the best we can hope for is a draw and 1 point.

However the 1-1 draw at Highbury 3 weeks later could easily be a 3-0 to the Gunners so I think it somehow even things out a little bit.

Anyway, should we get 1 point out of it we will still be levelled with them and it goes to GD, which we will lose unless we beat Ipswich 8-0.

The real disapointment for me is the following games

Blackburn / Bolton -- with 1 goal lead we sit back and got drawn levelled

Southampton -- need I say more?  1 point in 2 games and it is a disgrace.

Having said all that I still think the lads has done well enough this year and shown improvement -- the only black spot to this season is that both Berger and Barmby didn't have their fair share of contribution throughout the year.   Murphy has done better than last year and Smicer is his usual inconsistent self.

Roll on the next year (or is it too early??) -- I think next year we should give Biscan a bit more chances and then to have better offense from our midfield from the likes of Barmby / Berger / Smicer, that is if they are all staying.....

Our points tally this year is tremendous improvement, not to forget it's done on the back of back-breaking expectations after the treble season and without the most important man in our campaign for an extended period.   With also a bonus showing at the champ league, the lads and the staff should be well commended.

The disapppointing showings named are indeed so.  Let's everyone have learnt from them.

We'll land the championship in the not too distant future.  This much is evident!  ;)
