Atomic Kitten to cover YNWA..

From ThisIsAnfield.com

Pop group Atomic Kitten are to release a cover version of the famous Liverpool anthem You'll Never Walk Alone. The group, currently Britain's most succesful girl band, are all from Liverpool, although not all the band support Liverpool FC.

Liz is an Everton fan: "The video's going to be farcial because I'll be popping up in the background in full Everton kit!".

It's not the only thing which sounds farcial Liz.

They can fuck right off.  Obviously, they'll start with all the 'Were Scouse' etc. (Although they live in fucking London).

Andy McCluskey of 80's Liverpool band Orchestral Manouevres In The Dark put the band together, writes all the songs, and is also their manager.

If this is true, is he also a Red? Or is he a bluenose trying to ruin the credibility of YNWA?

We must be told!

Doesn't someone hold the copyright of it?

Or could we be sued for singing it?!

Would they?

This is the song that defines the tragedy and triumph of Liverpool FC and its fans.

It should not be abused in such a way.

This is a disgrace, and shouldn't be allowed to happen. However it might just encourage some of them fuckwits, you all know the ones who stand with their hands on their hips wondering what the fucking words are to join in when we all sing it.

an advantage, then he should be."

Unfortunately owning the copyright (it's from the 40's right? so maybe it's out of copyright...) is not enough to stop someone recording your song... It just means that they have to pay you a royalty fee for doing it.

But anyway. I suspect a secret Manc/Evertonian plot. This evil must be stopped.

Just so you youngsters know the history of YNWA...

It's from the musical....Carousel.

Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Music by Richard Rodgers

Copyright 1945 by Williamson Music Co.

Williamson Music Co. owner of publication and allied rights throughout the world.
International copyright secured.

Williamson Music Co. is a registered trademark of the Trusts and Estates of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II

So Atomic Kitten would have had to have gotten Williamson Music Co. permission to record the song...
Either we are a club of supporters or become a club of customers.

I understand exactly why we don't want them to do it, but hey, if they're going to do it anyway, maybe it could be to our advantage.

Just go with this for a second. What if............

The footage for the video was shot at Anfield in front of the Kop. Especially if they were prepared to wait to next season on a European night. All the flags, the scarves, the banners, the Kop in full voice. A video sold and shown all around the world. Various clips interspersed with the girls doing their thing (Davey Fairclough against St. Etienne, Brucie against Roma in 1984, Michael against the Arsenal in Cardiff, etc) A number one record with the Kop backing it. Could you get any better publicity?

.........if done right.

Not true. You can own copyright on a recording and prevent it being used for advertising or in a film, but you cannot prevent someone from recording a song you own the copyright to. But AK will have to pay a royalty to Williamson for each copy sold- and credit the original composers. Williamson will also get a royalty each time the song is played on the radio or at Anfield, no matter which version it is.

But once a song is "out there" absolutely anyone can make their own version of it. Think of Sid Vicious's Version of "My Way". I think the copyright holder would've tried to stop that one....or Half-Man Half Biscuit's cover of a David Essex classic:

Me and my girl, seal-clubbing
Me and my girl, out on the ice

Steve W - no offence but I hope you're joking! It's bad enough they're doing this anyway without us fans or the club giving it some sort of 'seal of approval'! Atomic Kitten are using something synonymously associated with our club for THEIR publicity, LFC does not need a band of here-today-gone-tommorow scutters for IT'S publicity, let alone for a version that will no doubt piss all over our tradition to satisfy the bland tastes of naive popstar-loving tweenies!

My thoughts exactly...
Scutters... LOL...  ;D

Which one's the Bluenose?
The one with the stricght highlighted hair?  ;)

Personalyy I thought Leverkusen's rendition at Old Trafford was far more in keeping...  ;D

Farman,

Unfortunately I wasn't joking. But let me say, I am 100% against this happening at all.   >:(

As you said yourself, they are doing this, using a song which is particularly associated with LFC for they're own publicity without any seal of approval of the club or fans?

Therefore would it not be in the club's interest to try and get on board so that they could influence the outcome of how this song is produced.

I'm looking at this situation from the fact that they are going to bring out this song no matter what we think.

...yup.

And don't Atomic Kitten play places like Party on the Pier and other local venues?

I hope they get royally booed at every gig... but then think about it.  There'll be Evertonians there... who'll boo.  They'll be Mancs there... who always boo and there'll be Reds there too... who should also boo the lack of respect shown.

Who'd have thought a bunch of (very fit) airheads could unite the three sets of fans so readily??

Ha ha ha! Yes, the reaction on all sides might well be quite funny  ;D

Steve M - I guess, looking at it again, I can see where you're coming from, but personally I'd rather their version is as shite as it can be so it will die, comically, with no support from anyone.

I remember the Three Tenors bringing out their version a few years ago. Christ that sounded weird. But I didn't really mind them doing that. Perhaps it was because the artists have those few extra degrees of respectability, and dealt with it sensitively without (as I fear A.Kitten will do) taking the piss.
The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me
