A friend of mine interviewed his friends and family about their desert island discs for a personal podcast series a few years ago (2009). At the time, I said:

Guns 'N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle
The Clash - Complete Control
The Smiths - This Charming Man
The Beatles - Hey Bulldog
Super Furry Animals - Ice Hockey Hair
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
Blur - For Tomorrow
LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
Love - You Set The Scene
Gerry & The Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone

It's eight years on, and I definitely think most of those would still be in there. Bowie would replace The Smiths though...

Phil - fantastic stuff. I've got the podcast of your episode downloaded to keep me company on a long flight on Sunday. Looking forward to it. Thanks to Jim for the heads-up, too!

6 Years since anyone posted here but rather than start a new thread I thought I would dredge it up and start again
Picking 8 or 10 records is near impossible, even moreso when you are younger because things change, anyway, most of these have stood the test of time for me so here goes
In no particular order
1. GLENN CAMPBELL-WICHITA LINEMAN
Don't know why I love this, just do
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/XCcoLNRNipo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/XCcoLNRNipo</a>
2. JOHNNY CASH-HURT
Not sure how much I would play this on a desert island but I could not do without it, one for the down days, brilliant though
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/8AHCfZTRGiI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/8AHCfZTRGiI</a>

3. GIL SCOTT-HERON-B MOVIE
Value for money because its like 2-3 songs, mesmeric towards the end
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/xSOp507HJMA" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/xSOp507HJMA</a>
4. VAUGHAN WILLIAMS-FANTASIA ON A THEME BY THOMAS TALLIS

One of the few pieces of music that have made me shiver, worth watching Master and Commander again for this
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/ihx5LCF1yJY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/ihx5LCF1yJY</a>

5. EARTH, WIND & FIRE-SEPTEMBER
Well, you need a bit of fun on your own
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/Gs069dndIYk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/Gs069dndIYk</a>

6. THE BEACH BOYS-SAIL ON SAILOR
Something to sing along to, Carl Wilson's Beach Boys
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/RQOaLP-qPmk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/RQOaLP-qPmk</a>
7. LHASA DE SELA-DE CARER A LA PARED
The only recent discovery but I know this will stand the test of time
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/AJaOptRE00E" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/AJaOptRE00E</a>
8. PINK FLOYD-FEARLESS

I have to have a Floyd song and this was one of the earliest I remember, double value as some of you who last till then end will already know

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/IkgaMFjo_lI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/IkgaMFjo_lI</a>
9. IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS-HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK
Music and attitude have never been matched better
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/0WGVgfjnLqc" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/0WGVgfjnLqc</a>

10. WILCO-I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART
A song that just gets better the more you play it

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/3RQcPC8KY_g" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/3RQcPC8KY_g</a>

Because it is A Love Supreme. Perfect.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/fth9UUa1Mfw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/fth9UUa1Mfw</a>

Miles at his best, with his best line up, Coltrane, Adderley and Evans are all on the cusp of becoming leaders of their own bands and also becoming Greats within the genre...not forgetting the sublime playing of Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers. Funnily enough, this is the only tune which Adderley sat out from...still

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/TLDflhhdPCg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/TLDflhhdPCg</a>

The greatness of Gil, he was and is always relevant. That moment on the steps of the Congress on January 6, 2021 all I heard was Gil and this...

The Constitution
A noble piece of paper
With free society
Struggled but it died in vain
And now Democracy is ragtime on the corner
Hoping for some rain
Looks like it's hoping
Hoping for some rain

And I see the robins
Perched in barren treetops
Watching last-ditch racists marching across the floor
But just like the peace sign that vanished in our dreams
Never had a chance to grow
Never had a chance to grow.

One of the most unappreciated bands. Brilliant band.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/l3VqAsMXE7o" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/l3VqAsMXE7o</a>

Everyone needs some Stevie in their life...which one though, there's too many to pick from. Playful Stevie...apart from the percussion he plays everything on this track.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/RxsBc5p-dPU" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/RxsBc5p-dPU</a>

From the greatest music ever written...Richard Wagner's Gotterdammerung: Siegfried's Funeral March. Everyone should give the Ring Cycle a listen at least once in their lives.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/_5zNH6R1zsE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/_5zNH6R1zsE</a>

I've always been philosophical about things beyond my control, part of my job. I do wish I could have seen these live...so clever, so moving...so brilliant.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/O4rbTBKRedE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/O4rbTBKRedE</a>

The greatest band, ever. It was a toss up between this or A Day In The Life. My mum saw The Beatles quite a few times and she played the harp and Celtic Harp...that's why this one won...plus, once you know the story that's being told in the song...

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/VaBPY78D88g" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/VaBPY78D88g</a>

It's really hard picking which one from Hank. This is Rock And Roll before it had been thought of.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/-Lza3NVH6Ig" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/-Lza3NVH6Ig</a>

This, this is sublime. It's pretty new and yet it's been a part of my daily playlist since it was released. This lad needs to be better known and more appreciated.

We are not that far apart are we, I have a Love Supreme and Kind of Blue (I only have 3 jazz albums)

Gil, well what can I say, saw him 4 times, immense and always will be, Winter in America is song no.2 for me

Talk, Talk, Spirit of Eden is one of my top 5 albums and probably the only one I have to listen all the way through, Living in Another World was 11th for me but probably should have been in there if I could take the video as well

Stevie Wonders 1970-1976 ish period is a pinnacle in music, for me 'I Wish' is on the boat if I can take more records

Thanks

People with good taste are like "birds of a feather". ;D I love all kinds of music, as you see from the selection above. Some though are more important than others. Which leads onto...

That Eden LP is sublime. Easily one the that decades best. It's such a departure from their other LP's in it's use of organic sounds & rejecting structure in favour of mood & atmosphere. For me it drew upon ambient, jazz like arrangements. Listening to the vocals from Hollis with their understated grace, and his hauntingly poignant vocals evoke wrenching spiritual turmoil, one of loss and yet also of spiritual redemption. It's a truly ground breaking LP.

As to Stevie. My grandparents told me they'd sen him in The Cavern...Liars, I said. They really did. Little known that he played The Cavern. The last time I saw him live was in 1980 at Wembley..he was/is special.
