I'm not signed up to The Athletic but can certainly imagine the type of article it is. However, would be unfair to say "as usual" for Ornstein talking out of his arse. He took a lot of flak for saying we had no money to spend ahead of the summer, but it turned out to be true. He was certainly very reliable when it came to reporting on Arsenal for the BBC, so I'm sure he has strong sources.

We had money to spend - but didn't need to spend it unless there was a player we absolutely needed.

The worst part is that it's part of a paid site. I'd expect the Echo putting agent rumors on their site, but if I subscribed to the Athletic, it would be to escape stories like that and get some actual journalism.

Just looked up his age and he will be 30 at the beginning of next season which I believe is the final season of his current contract. He is one of the most important players in our midfield and one of the most reliable as well. Would be absolutely devastated if we sold him in the summer. Surely we could still demand upwards of 40m for him which wouldn’t half reflect the value he has in our squad. Who could afford him at that price anyway given his age?

This could be one of the first players where we are forced into a succession decision based on his age profile. If we cannot agree on a new contract: Keep him until the end of his contract, buy his replacement at the beginning of next season (Aouar, Zakaria or similar age/ talent profiles if Grujic can’t do it) and then part cordially in 2021.

I think he'll move.  Don't want him to, but I'm surprised a new contract hasn't been sorted with only a year and a half left on his current one.

I think what we can all safely say is that behind the scenes there will be a plan. I hope he stays, but I trust the club 100%. It is interesting that this is the first core player to start getting to the point where it is a question of a new contract and/or succession planning. It will be interesting to see how the club addresses this over the next few years.

Although on that note, it was beginning to look like Milner would be moving on at the end of his contract recently too

Ornstein from the Athletic reporting that Gini could leave in the summer with offers from Italy and Spain. Currently has 1 year left on his contract but hopefully Ornstein is talking out his arse as usual
It's always the way when a team is doing well - the media tries to create stories out of nothing (as usual).

I can see Gini staying for a long time yet for a number of reasons. Firstly, he's a fantastic player, the best protector of the ball in the league in my view, incredibly consistent, and an important cog in our machine. Secondly, he's a big game player and I think we'll have plenty of those in the next few years.

Thirdly, his playing style (like Virgil's) is very efficient and he's rarely injured, as his anticipation means you never see him lunging in, diving into tackles, or putting his body in a situation where he may get hurt. He was one of Klopp's early signings, playing 166 games in only 3 and half seasons, and I think he'll still play at the highest level into his mid-thirties as he's a real athlete.

Finally, he's a great example (as are all our players) to our midfield youngsters, and will also help with the transition from a Henderson/ Milner/ Wijnaldum-type midfield to a Fabinho/AoC/Keita one in the next 2-3 years. You could play him with any other combination of midfielders and he'd do well - he's that good.

I think we need him at the club for as long as we can keep him - regardless of what offers we might receive.

It may be because I'm a journalist myself, but I find it tedious when people discredit journalists simply because they don't like what's being reported. Ornstein himself was slaughtered for saying that we wouldn't spend this summer, which quite obviously in hindsight was true.

There's a line between criticism and personal abuse, and it's worth asking yourself which side your response is on before you post. Because these are the guys who do their best to give us any insight at all beyond the happy-go-lucky communicators of the clubs and the Premier League, who only ever ask, say and write what they're told.

I'm sure you do a fine job, but I think you're on the wrong site if you're expecting much empathy or respect for journalists (or the media in general).

There's plenty of journalists that get credit on here where its due, but given our history with the media it's little wonder they're viewed with such scepticism and suspicion.

Not what he said though, to quote him he said " “There’s not a lot of money left. Any spending will be below the fees that they spent on Shaqiri last summer, a fee of around £13m". - Mr David 'Arsenal are kings and all other teams are shit in comparison' Ornstein

Then you look at what Kieran Maguire said about it, a football finance expert, “ Liverpool finished second in the Premier League and actually generated more money from TV from the Premier League than Manchester City because they were on television live more often, and combine that with the additional revenue from the Champions League, and Liverpool’s cash reserves are high, They can sign practically anybody they choose. If Jurgen Klopp feels there are still one or two places missing in terms of the squad, they could spend £50m-£60m on a player today, absolutely." - Kieran Maguire of Liverpool University.

One thing makes me comfortable with Gini’s contract situation and that’s who our owners are, and the way they do business. We may not be swimming in a bottomless pool of transfer funds but we’re in a situation now where we just don’t need to sell. So the only way Gini is leaving this summer is if we get a combination of him saying he wants out and we get a ridiculous offer, and frankly I can’t see either of those things happening. I mean, there’s been no substantial indication that he wants to leave, has there?

I’m sure he’s got a few good years left in him so it would be great if we could tie him down for a bit longer, but if he chooses to leave in 2021, so be it. The club has time to plan how to replace him. In fact, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they have already given the matter some thought and identified targets.

Like others say - can't see it

Key part of the squad - yes
Gets regular playing time - yes
Winning trophies - yes
At a club that will reward him financially for success - yes
At a club with a fantastic team ethic and great place to be - yes
Playing for a manager who appreciates him - yes

To be honest, unless he harbours a childhood dream of playing for some other club, from a professional and financial point of view, he's got it made here

Georginio Wijnaldum is very happy at Liverpool. Would like to stay as long as possible. No panic about contract running out in 18 months. Plans in the pipeline about talks over new deal. Fully focused on helping Liverpool win the title. Believes he's at best club in the world

Encouraging.

The fact is there's not a midfield in any club in the world that wouldn't be enhanced by Wijnaldum at the moment. He's getting recognition at last too. Obviously within LFC, but outside it too. We're the best in the world. We want to the best players. It's the perfect match for us.
