I lied on my C.V. and now . . . .
« on: November 19, 2009, 03:58:09 pm »
well it wasn't me but a good mate of mine did. He works for a very large international bank and lied in his C.V. by stating he had a degree in public relations. H.R. have been onto him twice this week looking for confirmation of his degree. Any suggestions as to the best way to resolve this? He isn't keen in forging any documents as this will make matters far worse if he's found out.

If he works for large corp he'll be fucked, they will hang him out to dry!
It will be gross misconduct and hence, straight dismissal without notice.

They'll prolly not pay him anyway, because when they do find out, there will be some loophole i would imagine him.

Tell him to jibb it, theres no point working and not getting paid for it.

Its not big and its not clever.

Also think of the other candidates that went for that role, who more than likely WERE qualified for it.

From a HR point of view I'd say quit asap. I'm assuming that he's still in his probationary period so it's likely he'll only need to give one weeks notice. He needs to get out of there quick before they find out, dismiss him for what is likely to be gross misconduct, thus resulting in awful furture references.
On awaiting Everton's arrival for a derby game at Anfield, Shankly gave a box of toilet rolls to the doorman and said: 'Give them these when they arrive – they'll need them!'

What a legend this man is!

Just so I've got this straight, he wants a way of proving something that he's lied about and has no evidence for, without fabricating any evidence?

As everyone is saying in a large corporate environment he's fucked. The best he can do is get out without a disciplinary or associated dodgy references.

Then start working on a lie about why he quit.

Did he honestly think that a bank would not check references and qualifications?

That said, being able to bullshit your way into the job sounds like ample qualification for a PR job. Not that that argument will hold any traction with a bank...

I was just stating that before someone suggested forging any documents. His only real option is to own up imo but he reckons he'll lose his job. Obviously he shouldn't have done it and it's bad form, but was wondering if anyone had been in a similar position before, and if so, what did they do about it and what was the outcome.

if he's in a big bank he's probably fucked. knew someone who worked for a company called "Risk Solutions" and they do employee screening for a lot of the big banks. bit surprised he didn't get caught earlier as these screening companies don't even need to see a certificate.

What about this?

1. Find someone who has the degree that he's said he had at the interview.

2. Change his name by deed poll to that name.

3. Then chang his name back to his original name.

4. Take the degree in to HR with the second copy of the deed poll (the name on the degree deed poll to his actual name)

5. Tell them the delay was due to trying to get the degree updated with his 'new' name but he's now been told that the degree and the (second) deed poll is sufficient.

Might work!!

Actually wouldn't work as I'd imagine the deed poll would be dated post-interview so it'd be quite obvious at the time of interview it wasn't his actual name

Bad option.

His only real option is to leave. Just tell them he has found another job. They cant bad reference him and he gets away with it.

Own up - gross misconduct, sacked and legally within their rights to incorporate it in any future reference.

Or get tell them he doesn't have the degree certificate due to a house fire.

Tell HR he's been in touch with the University and cannot get another copy until the New Year.

That'll give him some time to look for a new job.

Or,

Do the above, find someone you trust to move into the area of the university, give their landline number to HR and get them to call and confirm attendance at University.

Each time the landline number rings they answer with, "good morning XXXXXXXXX University Records Department how may I help?"

Or

Set up an answer machine with "You have reached XXXXXXXXX University Records Department please leave a message after the tone......."

Then get someone to call back with confirmation.

Seems harsh (though not saying it could happen) surely he's doing the job to a satificatory standard, maybe he'd pay back a % based upon what they might pay a non-degreed employee.

Considering the length of time he's been in the job and the fact he hasn't been sacked, therefore must be suitable to the job, maybe he should own up and hope for the best.

Maybe he should cobble together a flimsy certificate with 'University of Life' at the top and then lick the back of it and slap it on the HR officers forehead, then tell her to make him a "cup of fucking tea".

True, but that can be risky as some employers put on references the reason for leaving, I'd therefore advise him to say something along the lines of, he's at a cross-roads of his life and isn't sure if this is the career he wants to pursue. Something along those lines so HR will just look at it and go, ok so it's it's either 'job not suitable' or 'career progression'. Therefore nothing can come back and bite him in the arse!

Yes I have read it, and I know Frank Abagnale then worked to prevent people doing what he did.

But when I went for my PGCE interviews very first thing they did was photocopy my qualifications.
