3-0! Smiling.
Much better second half. Can hardly believe what I’m seeing. Goal from Koumas and two from Danns. Quansah, Bradley, McConnell, Clark, Gordon, Nyoni,… Joe Gomez in defensive midfield. Hard to believe such a side, with so limited experience can go out and perform together. Kelleher's saves should not be forgotten. Konate was class again when called upon. But this night belonged to our young goalscorers. Let's hope it was the first of many more goals for them in a red shirt.

Great that it didn't go to extra time as most of our players would have to go home as their mums had called Jόrgen to remind them they have school in the morning.

That was a laugh really in the 2nd half. Jayden Danns first goal was a real natural goalscorer's finish - never even glanced at the goal, knew where it was and a lifted finish over the keeper, which are always the best ones for a striker.

Dear Southampton, learn how to finish.
Oh and did you know that Southampton have the fastest player ever in the universe except Konate just strolled past him at will.

Really good experience for the kids who came on. Two brilliant goals by Danns.

As I said above, the difference is that we can finish chances whereas Southampton can’t. We got better and better as the match went on. You could see the class that Mac has when he came on.

My MOTM was a close call. Konate was superb but, just because he played both halves and was excellent then I’m picking Quansah.

Five games before the break.

Forest away, Sparta Prague away, City home, Sparta at home then United.

I really hope Jayden Danns can have a great loan spell next season. He looks really promising and ready to play. If we didn’t already have 5 great attackers i‘d say keep him as backup, but thus lad needs regular game time!!

Amazing from the academy yet again!

It also pushes the Derby back a bit which is good, we know what the hack jobs would do to the kids.

Fully expect United to be going two footed against them. Hope we have some wise heads back for that match.

Well done to the Academy. I listened to the Liverpool FC podcast with Alex Inglethorphe which was a fascinating interview. It's great to see not just the kids getting chances but actually taking them as well. It must be such a buzz at the place now with the other young players watching on.

It's pretty remarkable that each time we've needed the academy lads to step up this season, they've stepped up and then some. First Quansah seamlessly replacing Matip. Then Bradley breaking through with Trent out. Now Danns, Clark and McConnell all showing that they have the potential to make it here long term.

If we can get some of the big boys back at the weekend and fully fit for the City game, then in retrospect this horrific injury crisis will have at least had a silver lining in giving them the opportunity to show what they can do.

I know Southampton made changes, but the gulf between the Championship and the PL is something if a team largely comprised of teenagers and reserves can boss one of the top teams in that league.

We could still have beaten most of the bottom half PL teams if they'd changed most of the side. Martin could have put a stronger side out.

Leicester won at Bournemouth, Leeds ran Chelsea close.

Could have done with Grujic and even Chirivella to tide us over this season

Absolutely mad result and scorers - what a week!

Everyone did well in the circumstances, which understandably was rusty first half with a new trialist at no. 6, and then the game completely changed with the goal. Then they were suddenly kept at bay so much comprehensively.

Quansah definitely deserved man of the match, but perfect cameo from Danns and great to hear him talk on the pitch with the experienced pro Elliot for support

Surprising routine considering the team we put out. Southampton were playing their reserves too, which also surprised me. But it looked like they did better than their regular starters, once they started bringing them on their play just broke down.

The moral of the story is, watch more youth football.

A great second half, superbly marshalled by Ibou and Danns has just showed he has something about him - the calmness in front of goal, something even Gakpo was lacking tonight.

A perfect night overall, didnt have to use Diaz either. Shame Forest didnt go to Extra time but think we'll be ok.

Good result that.  They came to play and had their chances, but we were too strong, in the end.  We rode our luck, at times.

Clark played really well and Danns took his chances superbly.

It was, but the moment and awareness for the second boded well for the future. Follow the ball in and the goals will come. Old fashioned natural goal scorer behaviour.
