She had a good voice but she was no Mariah Carey or Michael Jackson. Fuck me, anyone would think she was the second coming of Marilyn monroe.

"Amy, My Daughter" by Mitch Winehouse - Following her tragic death in July 2011, Mitch Winehouse wants to tell her incredible story in full. “Amy, My Daughter” will take the reader through her mischievous early years, her rise to stardom and to her much publicised struggles with addiction.

Hard to know and am loathed to accuse anyone but interestingly her Ma has kept a dignified silence.

You'd assume she'd left a fair bit in terms of estate and that he got a share.  But maybe not.

Think its been mentioned on here before somewhere. But if its for personal gain, he's a c*nt. If it's for non profit and to set up some sort of charity/ cause, then fair enough

I don't know that for certain - I was only skim reading the interview! But he definitely mentioned how she loved to help kids in need etc etc so I assumed the rest. I'd look it up if I could be arsed!

Can she be compared to Ella Fitzgerald or Etta James?

Fucking hell. What an insult!

Amy Winehouse was decent - but not on the same page as those. They were absolute legends of their day.

And I'd put plenty of bands ahead of the Beatles.
Agree with (all of) that. (even the Beatles thingy ... ;))
I saw a concert of Amy when she was sort of sober(ish).
The band was very good, but they seemed to do all the hard work.
Amy's voice was soft and not convincing at all.
I felt a little bit sorry for the band, they were trying so hard to make the best of it.
They ended the show with the Specials cover of Monkey Man.

About the dad, I always wonder where he was when she needed him.

The thread title is Amy Winehouse Dead, not Amy Winehouse's Dad.

None of us know enough about him to comment. He's had the misfortune to survive his daughter's death - what he does is of no interest to anybody. If you don't want to read his book - don't buy it.

By the way - the Amy Winehouse in Dingle documentary was very good last night.

My favourite of hers would probably be 'Me & Mr Jones', which is apparently about Nas. Though also love Some Unholy War, Wake Up Alone, and Love Is A Losing Game. And I've probably listened to her more since her passing. Such a shame.

Got round to watching the documentary tonight, it was really good, she had a great voice and really came alive in that performance. Not only that she came across as a really nice person too, a very sad end to a very impressive talent.

Just read on the Digital Spy website that Amy Winehouse's ex husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, is in a coma in hospital after a drink and (alleged) drugs binge.

The only song I can remember the first time I heard it is rehab. It was playing on the radio and it sounded like a cover, but I knew it was so good it would have been a massive hit if it was already out. Amy was a brilliant talent and her voice was most like Billie Holliday’s in that the vocal tone was exceptional, but yes her voice wasn’t technically exceptional in terms of range etc like a Mariah Carey or Annie Lennox, but Amy did have genuine soul in her vocals and her writing.

What I found disappointing was that all her songs seemed to be about her toxic romantic entanglements. whilst Billie had Lover man etc she also left us Strange Fruit.  I would have liked to see Amy live long enough to develop her writing but sadly it wasn’t to be.

I loved Amy, sang from her soul and put everything into her songs. Like a lot of special talents she had her demons, but I found it refreshing that unlike some, she never hid them. Let's be honest, no one is perfect in this life. I wish she had lived longer to develop her already talented song writing, but sadly sometimes it's not meant to be. But she has still left some real highlights, my favourite of her's was Back to Black, a superb song which showed off her vocals. Tears Dry on Their Own is another favourite.
