Robbie Savage?

I suppose Jenas has some some sort of pseudo-intellectual thing going on (at least in football terms, as he can do words what are bigger than just one syllable) so his idiocies actually get taken seriously sometimes, whereas everyone knows Savage is thick as fuck and Crooks is clearly deranged. Not sure what Jayjay has done to deserve his current ubiquity, but he's there now and we all somehow have to live with it.

He went on a rant on MotD a long while ago, around the time he started I think, about how ex-players should get special treatment when getting their coaching badges. He was so wound up, you could tell he had tried to get his badges, failed miserably, and turned to punditry instead.

Garth Crooks has made a career out of this. It’s a great model for Jenas to follow.

Contrast it to someone like Ian Wright. He sometimes says stupid stuff but holds his hands up when he’s wrong, he sometimes gets over-enthusiastic about Arsenal but at least he’s passionate and honest about his lack of objectivity at times and he actually gives some valid insights and makes some really good points - he’s better than Shearer or Jenas by a mile (and Shearer has improved to be fair) but due to his background and allegiances he’s often treated as a bit of a comic relief character by the shows that employ him, when he talks out of his hoop far, far less than about 20 others I could name.

I’ve got a lot of time for Ian Wright. He just tells it like he sees it, doesn’t try to be clever like Crooks or Jenas. You can tell he enjoys the game, and even though he wears his Arsenal allegiance on his sleeve, he doesn’t let it spoil his appreciation of other teams (including us). Basically, there’s no side to him. Same as Ally McCoist. Absolute opposite of Jenas who thinks he’s something special but is actually just a massive tit.

Shearer is Mr Platitude.

Lineker thinks he’s a lot funnier than he is.

Murphy is just thick.

I’d agree with all of that. Murphy has a chip on his shoulder massively about his departure from Liverpool and talks as if he was a far, far better player than he was. Now I don’t think you need to be a player of any ability to talk in an intelligent, reasoned way about the game, but that’s my impression of Murphy. It’s a good job I suppose, otherwise BBC would be a sinking ship given they rely on Murphy, Jenas and Richards for comment. Shame they’re all dense.

Jenas chats absolute wham with such supreme confidence, it's incredible. Feck knows how he's become so ubiquitous so quickly. He sounded on the verge of tears commentating on that Spurs game where they got kicked out of the Europa League, it was beautiful.

As someone said above, he's everywhere but very forgettable. Very much like Lineker. Stealing a living getting paid millions for a highlight show.  :lmao

I dont mind Richards because he doesnt seem to be too serious about his opinions. He is a laugh and a good bloke in general to watch. A bit like Ian Wright wherein you can see he enjoys the game and the punditry gig.
Jenas tries to sound intelligent but he couldnt tell an arse from a face with his game intelligence and is just a twat in general. I dont think he even watches most of the games he comments on because he says so many things that just arent true if you've actually watched.
With Murphy, he just sounds bitter. His comment this week on setpiece coaches just makes gim sound like a twat just like Keys and Gray who are absolute dinosaurs in their opinions being so dated they dont belong in the modern game.
BBC can surely do better than those two. Even NBC managed to get Tim Howard here in US and even though I dont like him, he is not terrible to listen to.

I've always thought Crooks was a total knob so I've ignored all his output for a good couple of years. Today I clicked on his team of the week and, regardless of the players he chose, it was like the insane ramblings of a crackhead. Are the BBC using him as some sort of modern day freak show?

All you need to make it as a pundit as a footballer is to be able to speak like you aren't sucking on a boiled sweet and you're seen as educated. Don't worry if your knowledge of the game is poor. As long as you don't sound as stupid as Paul Merson, you'll be fine.

Karen Carney

Former England and GB international on BBC Radio 5 Live

"At the end of the day, footballers are all actors and actresses and they are coming into an arena to perform. That is what Paul Pogba is, he has got the tricks, the flicks, the passes.

The way he looks, he has got an aura, a swagger about him. He will be loving this, every player wants to play in front a big crowd and he laps that up.

He was a class above everybody else today both in and out of possession."

He doesn't really say anything outlandish though, does he?

I actually don't mind pundits inventing talking points and babbling their way through arguments. That's par for the course these days

Jenas strikes me more as someone who'd much rather do his colouring inside the lines

There's more boring and mundane pundits than he IMO

I remember when the Premier League first started and MOTD snapped up Alan Hansen as a pundit. He was unlike anything we'd seen on TV before, going into a level of tactics and technicality that no-one had done previously. I used to love watching MOTD even if Liverpool had lost as you knew he would dissect the game into minute detial and you'd learn something.

Nowadays TV stations just seem to pick up any old ex-player and give them a prominent role to spout utter horseshit for and hour and a half. I don't think there is anyone I listen to anymore, the game is just awash with second rate footballers giving their third rate opions. Roy Keane just continually bleats on about 'not enough quality' or 'not trying hard enough' like those are the only real factors that decide a football match. No insight into the managers tactics or plan, just blame the players for not running enough.

When I watch on the TV I tend to turn ther game on 5 minutes before the start and turn over as soon as the final whistle is blown.

Jenas is a knob. Richards isn't much better. The rest are even worse. The only reasonable pundits they've used are the current managers.
Was it earlier someone was saying how Gary Neville told Richards to do his badges so he'd have a clue what he was talking about? Allegedly, he followed the advice.

Hansen was quite unique in that he was clearly insightful enough to be a good coach or manager but wanted an easier life so he became a pundit (before the really big bucks came into management).

Nowadays pundits are 10 a penny and are either failed managers (Neville/Roy Keane) or hacks phoning it in who have nothing interesting to say (Rio Ferdinand, Mcmanaman, Murphy, Jenas, Owen etc) and not good enough to manage.

30 years ago they'd have opened a bar or something after they finished playing - after not making that much money as a player - now they cling onto the PL millions via Sky/BT/BBC etc to still earn a good salary and steal a living.

Alan Hansen was the king of pundits. Although does anyone else remember him saying ‘he needs shooting for defending like that’ not long after a Colombia defender was shot for scoring an own goal? I think it was the 94 World Cup?

I trust Dion far far more than any of the other crop. A man who can get excited about a two up two down can sell Premier League football no problem.

I'm not having these defences of Micah Richards. He's almost as bad as Trevor Sinclair but hides behind a sunny demeanour and embarrassing, water-weak 'banter' but is a mouthpiece of idiocy and misinformation for the glorious benefit of the Rulers of Abu Dhabi. Everything he says it such shite and the way that he and Sinclair speak would make you think City are the white knight saviours of football, rather than ruining it. Richards was even bombed out post takeover for not being good enough, but he still champions the club. I'm certain both are on the payroll in some capacity.

Richards is on there purely as a City cheerleader while having the jokey demeanor to be a banter jockey that plays well with Sky. He's obviously getting paid by the club.

Neville has gone from trying to modernise Sky punditry from the ruins of the Keys and Gray dinosaur era, to thinking he's working on MUTV (while his mate is manager particularly). Carragher certainly doesn't do the same for Liverpool (and compromised himself after the spit). Keane is there as a parody of a shock jock.

BT just employ ex-players who have nothing interesting to say at all and are just picking up the easy money. Same with the BBC. Who wants to listen to Murphy or Jenas? Absolute no marks. Particularly a bitter, sour little gobshite like Murphy.

Could have done with Grujic and even Chirivella to tide us over this season
