Casino Royale was a magnificent film to be fair,,

Although, of course, Tarantino was pencilled in to direct the first Craig Bond film, but he fell out with the Broccolis ..  As did Danny Boyle for the last outing..

Now, Christopher Nolan says he is interested …. That might be the perfect combination maybe

Drags a bit though doesn't it? Martin Campbell's direction has much needed restraint from the CGI clusterfuck of Die Another Day but nothing stands magnificent stands out from it. Most Bond films could do with a good half hour being cut from it.

Was die another day the one with the invisible car?  That was terrible

Casino Royale was great, however I feel it's held in such high regard due to the previous few Brosnan entries being, depending on your opinion, between average and totally shit.

Quantum of Solace was met with middling reviews, however it was my favourite of the Daniel Craig movies, and in terms of gritty realism he's definitely my favourite Bond, even if I'm not crazy about the likes of Skyfall or the abomination he finished with (especially the ending).

I'm not sure I agree about it dragging it remains one of my favourite Bond films. Die Another Die was just horrific. I tended to like most of the Craig films I loved the grittiness of them. It's just personal choice of course, but I also loved the Living Daylights which were one of Timothy Dalton's films and usually gets panned.

it got me thinking.

There's no genuinely great Bond film.

I checked back a few years because I could swear this particular topic had come up before, turned out it had both here and in a separate thread:

Is the James Bond franchise actually... any good?

My take is still the same - I think the idea of being the Bond character himself grabbed a lot of people's imagination in a time when international travel, glamourous women & cool technology weren't a feature of everyday lives (and 60s Brit culture was in its heyday), and this launched the movie series to a level it didn't really deserve on the strength of the film-making alone.

Yeah that's a good take. Also explains the poorly aged stereotypes of foreign cultures and people. That along with the Bond films tendency to go along with whatever is trending in action films at the time prevents the series from being truly ground breaking cinema. But on the other hand, the excellent practical stunts and charismatic leads elevate the films a notch or two in quality.

Like most people have their Doctor Who era, they also have their James Bond era. Mine was Bosnan. They were very British and from a filming point they were very practical and without loads of CGI (some of the best model shots in cinema came during the 90's)

I get the Die another Day hate. But I think everyone who worked on that knew it was the end of the road and if you're going to go out then dialing everything to 11 was the only way.
