Gig cancelled altogether.  Feel bad for those pencilled in to open for them more than anything.   :(

Unfortunately, the gig went ahead!! No La's.

Paula I Karol were ok, a bit alternative/polish folk.
Jetlag were horrific. Truly awful. Drove most out of the room and downstairs to the Sonia Leigh gig.
Tyburn Saints were ok. Bit too much of a 'new romantic' tribute band for my liking.
Dutch Uncles were poor, too. Wanted to be the Killers.

For reference, although Sonia Leigh is officially listed as C&W, she was fantastic. She's currently touring the US and I'd recommend going is she comes back to town!

Driver Drive Faster last night at Shipping forecast, Harvest Sun gig. Really good. Hints of Neil Young and Cosmic music. Shame there weren't more people there but at least I had elbow room I suppose.

Anyone off to Chester Rocks to see Cast (headlined by The Courteeners)?  I know it ain't Liverpool but seeing as people are chatting about Cast and Chester's nearby thought I'd ask.

Booked a ticket for Liverpool Sound City the other day, £30 if you book before Sunday.  Hoping to see The Temper Trap, Willis Earl Beal, Slow Club, The Heartbreaks, Django Django, Michael Kiwanuka, James Vincent McMorrow, The History Of Apple Pie, Eugene McGuiness and there's still more to be announced, not bad for 30 quid.

Heading to see Christy Moore in the Philharmonic on Sat night - should be a belter of a gig.

Here is him singing a song by Amsterdam.

Jim Jones Revue at the O2 Academy 2 last week were absolutely stunning. Well worth not going down for Wembley on the Friday night and having to get up at 4 the next day. Rocked the joint, as I believe they say

Anybody going to The Shipping Forecast to see The Dirty Rivers tomorrow night?

Only started listening this week (chance pick based upon them being the next Friday night act when I glanced through the venue's flier on Monday) but very impressed so far - sound quite similar to The Boxer Rebellion, actually:

*owls last night at Mello Mello were really superb. Don't really know how to describe them really - atmospheric, menacing, brooding, soulful. Remarkably restrained as well. Their guitarist is truly excellent. Some Peter Green-isms on show.

Sn'Etienne at The Kaz last night.  It was a gig of two haikus.

Diamonds and feather
Boas, looking glam but
Sounding jaded, faded.

And then the classics.
Feeding off the audience
Reborn. Triumphal.

Saw the first half of the set, good sound they had but got dragged away by our group to wander the streets arguing about where we were going. Ah, Friday nights...

Sn'Etienne at The Kaz last night.

Did they have the vinyl LP on sale? I meant to ask my mate who went to get me one but forgot. The album cover is fantastic. Trying to persuade the Mrs. to let me frame one in the front room, or a print by the same artists perhaps.

They actually had signed prints on sale, with an A-Z type index of streets, at the bottom.

just looking at the gig diary for the post-festival autumn season...some quality (small/mid size venue) bands on the road - Walkmen, Beach House, Antlers, Grizzly Bear etc....trouble is, no fucker seems to play Liverpool anymore?...Manchester sweeps up with The Academy and the HMV Ritz.....Liverpool seems content with the mega, and generally shite bands at the Arena or the more exclusive Philharmonic set-up...apart from the odd scraps at the Kazimer there's no mid size rock venue for alt/indy/decent bands - there should be with the 02 academy but its lineup seems to consist of horrendous tribute bands and aged pop/rock reunions.............its been a growing trend for the past few years but seems to be getting worse now......very poor state of affairs

I disagree mate, I think that over the last few years the lads at Harvest Sun, EVOL, Wingwalker, Mellowtone etc have totally revitalised the Liverpool gig scene getting some really interesting bands and getting them to play in some brilliant venues. Far better than your chain ripoff joints like the Academy or Ritz.

As an example in July Harvest Sun have managed to get Dawes to play at the Kazimier, discounting festival slots their only other UK date is at the Scale in that London.  I confidently expect that in the busy autumn season I'll be going to a gig a week up until the several gigs a night splurge that is LMW.

Just looking at September, I have already got Cate Le Bon, Sleepy Sun and the Liverpool Psychelia Festival on the calendar... should rename it Psychetember.  There will be more to come I reckon

I think there's some really good stuff on in Liverpool too.

I've lost count of the number of great Harvest Sun gigs, a lot of which I've missed, but in various venues of the last year or so I've seen War On Drugs, Kurt Vile, Eleanor Friedberger, Jonathon Richman, Widowspeak, lots of out of town bands who have come a long way to play Liverpool.

I agree we do get missed out a bit in the mid-range, I think the o2 academy thingy often has poor bookings, but then again it's a poor venue now - crap beer, over-priced, and they kick you out before the last note has finished ringing. Saw The Strokes there back ni the day, and Cornershop a few years ago, they should have better bands on I agree there.

It can be a little frustrating to see the likes of Beach House, Phosphorescent, Grizzly Bear, Lambchop etc. miss us out on their tours, but I think it's better than it has been, and looks to continue on the up.

fair enough...but still think theres a substantial gap in the gig scene between here and up the Lancs....booked tickets this week for Animal Collective, Beach House, Grandaddy, father John Misty, Grizzly Bear, First Aid Kit and Richard Hawley...precisely the kind of bands who would have been playing The Carling Academy, Stanley Theatre or Barfly a couple of years back - but who now for whatever reason completely swerve Liverpool in favour of Manchester.....agree the Harvest Sun lads have done some great stuff (will be eternally grateful to them for getting Roddy Frame on the kazimer last year!) and more power to them... but still cant help thinking that the Liverpool gig scene as a whole is missing a trick...

There is a gap, unfortunately Manchester has become the main NW stopover for bands, for a number of reasons, better attendance, proximity to the BBC in Manc, etc etc and perhaps a decent mid-sized venue is one of those reasons.

The O2 Academy is a fucking disgrace though I am almost glad they don't have decent gigs on anymore just so I don't have to set foot in the place.  I miss pre-gig drinks in Ma E's more than I do the venue

I don't go to many gigs now. When I was in school and uni I seemed to go to a gig a week. Are there still many bands on in the Mountford Hall? I've seen loads of gigs there. Also saw some pretty big names in the Royal Court in the past - Oasis, Blur, Ryan Adams, White Stripes, Cast. Wish it was still a music venue.

Noticed it as well so many mid range bands not playing the city in recent years, with the echo now its not often I need to go into Manchester for gigs at the men but its just disappointing as the mid level gigs aren't exactly cheap and the added cost of a train to Manchester is massively offputting.

Still going to see Kate Nash at the Zanzibar on Wednesday

Tony Bennett at the Empire last night was on top form - glad to have seen him at last. Not sure if he'll ever be back as he's now (a spry) 85, but he was looking as fit as a fiddle with a still really good voice, that warmed up over the course of his set.

still cheesed off about the comparitive lack of quality gigs in the city....just wondering how many the currently moribund Neptune / Epstein theatre holds?....used to be a great venue for stand up comedy...cant help thinking it would be ideal for certain singer/songwriter artists and the low-fi indy folk crowd.....seems daft to get a grant to renovate the place..renovate it....and then have it sitting there doing fuckall?

I used the phrase 'comparative lack of gigs' advisedly...ie, compared to Manchester, Liverpool gets fairly thin gruel...for instance, for whatever reason the city doesnt seem to be on the map anymore for American alternative indy/folk artists.....the Low Anthem gig this week is very much the exception...Mancs have the Academy, the Ruby Lounge, The Ritz, Methodist Hall, Deaf Academy, Night and Day, Band on The Wall, The Roadhouse...I was merely positing the idea that we may be short of a suitable venue or two...for which the freshly refurbed Neptune could possibly find a roll.

Dawes are an American indie/folk artist.

In September we have Cate le Bon and Sleepy Sun both playing and then an entire festival of Psyche.  The above mentioned Kazimier garden is hosting a festival of great, if mainly local, bands in August.

In Liverpool recently I have seen gigs at the Academy, the Kazimier, Leaf, Mello Mello, Camp & Furnace, Epstein Theatre, St Brides, The Norwegian Seaman's Church, Static Gallery, CUC.

Two of those have just closed but the Epstein is only just back on the scene and we will have a newly refurbed Royal Court soon too - anyone know what they will be putting on there?

My guess that for promoters in Liverpool the big problem is convincing bands to play the city and then filling the venue if they do.  I know from my very amateur efforts that there is a feeling in the industry that people don't come to gigs in Liverpool.  I think at one time it may have been true, I have seen some superb, but poorly attended gigs in Liverpool over the years but I think it is slowly changing mainly through the efforts of the some really good promoters out there.

Has anybody been to any of the Dovedale Social nights that some of the lads from The Anfield Wrap have put on?

I was thinking of going down one week so I wanted to know if anybody has anything good/bad to say about it.
